There's a tremendous amount of meaning in this song when you look at it through the idea of a Deus Ex Machine. A machine used in a play that comes in as the hand of God or fate. There's a tremendous amount of imagery of stage mechanics---her as a fake bird being controlled by strings, being pulled up and down by a church bell. The real and fake, God and fate, life and death, etc.

I just discovered this song yesterday, so I'm still working through it. But, it is beautiful.

I guess it's because I'm new to her music, but this song doesn't do anything for me. I've tried to listen to a few of her songs, and so far "No Provenance" is the only one that I even remotely enjoy.

I really want to give her a shot, but it's really hard. My ears are really sensitive to pitch, so sometimes listening to her really hurts (quite literally). But I do want to give her a fair try.

What really got me to understand why she had captivated so many was actually listening to the polyrhythms in this song. When you don't focus on her voice for a while you really start to feel what she's feeling.

Joanna can be quite hard to listen to when you hear her for the first time. She's really unusual and different. But, when you make yourself listen to her for some time, you end up loving her and you can't get enough of her music. I find it hard to understand some of her lyrics because English is not my vernacular language, but either way, it's all together (the lyrics, the music, and her voice) really relaxing, peaceful, poetical and absolutely adorable. And so is she.

That's great if you want to fit it into a certain style for your interest, but I don't think any real musicians should create music purely to fit a genre.
