@kevinward good hard drive, no real prbs ! BUT WD JUST NOW UPDATED there portable Hard drives, literally this week and man oh man there a thing of beauty lol great build quality and come at 500GB or 1TB with the option of model 1 with usb or the other model with FW800....they are however much heavier than the one your talking about...sad thing about all these drives is they don't have thunderbolt, but if you have an old laptop then its not a prb for you...
Hi...some people complaint, after some time the USB port on the hard drive will become loosen when connect with the cable. Is it true? How's yours currently?
@Firestormify stop wasting my time with useless comments...stop wasting time on the other videos you've commented on, rudeness will get you no where ! don't think I haven't seen you trolling around on other videos...do something productive with your time !
@Firestormify nope not muslim...also my videos are detailed, so they always for reviews cross 10 mins..want shorter videos, then watch someone else's review..i believe in detail no matter what the product is...5 mins videos are not reviews, in my view there useless..
I have a WD passport similar to that one. 1 week and its already broken, I lost my documents and files. Need to pay for retrieval. I went back to dvd back up, much safer.
I just bought a 320GB version of this yesterday--My Passport Essential--and it's got that glossy black fingerprint magnet plastic you mentioned. I don't know about the version you've got there, but mine already fell off my workspace--while it was plugged in--and so far so good. It landed on a carpeted floor, though. I have a much smaller drive in a metal external case that also fell once (cats) and it's still working (it was also plugged in). I think these drives are tougher than they look.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
gee since it's to "cheap" why dont you take the hard drive out of the case and wire a bomb to it? i mean, that's what YOU PEOPLE do to cheap things right? That must be why there are suicide bombers all over the place
Fantastic drive but that conector is crap. He's right DONT MOVE IT or it will disconect in fact I have to use mine upsidedown to stop it disconecting.
Thanks for the review. I bought the black 640GB version today. Mine had the glossy, figerprink magnet finish, but I didn't have the same lsoe USB problem and in fact it fits a little too well and hard to pull out sometimes.
Don't use the WD software. Its supposed to mirror the source drive but people have found when you delete the backup off the WD Passport it will delete the source file as well without warning.
So what your saying is that you think it cheap looking and you had to buy a case for it so anymoney you save is not really saved so you may as well got the real think thing ie. imac's own and be alot happyer lol
ye but like i said in this video, seagate have a bit of a high failure rate in the last year or so, wd has improved so until seagate sort the problems out i am buying wd....i just heard that seagate are right now sorting the problem out !
As far as I know Seagate fixed the issues with their drives. It was a firmware problem with some of their 1TB and 1.5TB drives methinks. If you get one now, or one of a different size you're pretty much certain to get one with the good firmware. You're best off checking their support site though to see if the model you get (or looking at) has been known to have issues so you can get the firmware update ready to flash it "just incase".
I have the glossy one it seem not too sturdy. But I left the cord in the drive while in my bag and it broke in 1 month. So keep the cord and the unit separate.
try to take off the drive limitations. usually on the drives they have some sort of safety features when u take that off you probably will get about 30mb transfer rate, try that. also i haven't had any trouble with my "my book" 500gb drive, so not sure what happen 2 yours, but thanks for the video its changed my mind about portable external HDDs from western digital.
my life ended when i lost all my data.. haha.. i hve the one like candice's and its really good! build quality's great too.. no loose cable.. then i borrowed it to a friend.. now he's just being irresponsibel and saying idk where it is...etc.. all 200 of my movies are gone and most important my family vacation photos are gone.. i just beat myself up for not backing up..
Merry Christmas Adrian. I've got one of these. 160gb, i use it for my timemachine backups. They're fantastic. No need for 'mac' hardrives, that's ridiculous, there's no difference physically.
I have the same MacBook, but the lack of firewire should not at all effect the speed of your external drives. This is because hard drives are slow to being with, so how you attach it does not make a difference
in the last 5 years I bought a lot of different drives. And of the 3 seagate drives I bought 2 crapped out on me. I will only go with the other brands now: Samsung, WD and hitachi
Nice, i've got a WD passport (dunno which one lol) but has served me well for the few months ive had it. Will do a vid response this and do a review on it.
Got my WD Elements, 1TB External Hard Drive today. It's great for backing up and it makes no noise without the fan and even when it's on you can barely hear it!
I would actually recommend the LaCie Little Disk. I have one that's 320gb, but you have 500gb as well and perhaps even higher. The downside is that the casing is plastic and is basically a scratch magnet, BUT the plastic casing is quite thick and feels very secure to me. Another GREAT future is that the usb connecter is built-in, so even if you forget to take a longer cable with you (which you get for free), you can still connect it. Speeds probably about the same! Merry Christmas!
Yes western digital has a Firewire 400 working with no power supply its really great when im away from my firewire drive at home and i am able to still do my video editing without dragging it to the desktop
Western Digital drives is the best. I have never got any problem with any disk. I got 15 years old Western digital disks and it's works perfectly even today.
Samsung disk is bad. I had 2 samsung in my computer and 1 in my old xbox crystal...
My friend had also a samsung in his computer..
All the samsung disk crashes(and it's totaly broken) of only 2-3 years of use!
I never bought samsung anymore sence then, Western Digital for now :D

Longer USB cables cause slower transfer speeds too, so the short ones are best for USB hard drives. They're slow enough as it is lol.

USB is bad against firewire/eSATA! (USB 3.0 starting to be someting good)
Firewire reduce you computers activity
USB increase your computers activity
because:
USB can't send files at the same time it recive something(Half Duplex)
Firewire can recive and send data at the same time(Full Duplex)
