Part of this video is true. Safety glasses for visible lasers are just made out of the opposite color of the laser. for green- red, blue-yellow. Unfortunately he didnt mention that if your green laser doesnt have an IR filter, that IR energy will go right through the goggles to your eyes
@ConfessHD ive been hit directly, for not even 1/10 of a second, im fine, i have a 100mw max, 50mw min green laser, but it did infact hurt my eyes, so im more careful now
Can someone please clear this up for me: If I have a green laser that also emits IR, then does a safety glass for green lasers work in this case? Or what is your recommended solution? Thanks!
BAD IDEA, whats the OD of these gels? Is a persons eye sight not worth $60? you are setting yourself up for a nasty lawsuit telling the average person they can make thier own laser safety glasses, if you have any sense at all you will pull this video before someone gets hurt and you start getting letters from some greedy lawyer.
The fact that at 1:14 this guy points the laser directly at his own face shows how stupid he is.
It's been said many times here already but there is a huge danger of IR radiation. Because you can't see IR light, you dont have a natural blink defence, and often the first sign of IR exposure is an audible "pop!" as your retinal cells superheat and explode.
What about the IR laser that is emitted. I very much doubt it protects against that, buy some proper glasses that way you know your eyes will be protected eeejiot !!!
DANGER, congo blue doesn't block infrared at all. If your cheap greenie has lots of IR leakage, your retina could take a hit.
Use a cheap camera and a prism to spread out the spectrum and check for IR leakage. Or even try bouncing it off a CDROM, and look for extra infrared spots with the camera; spots that aren't visible by eye.
For anyone watching this, beware! Real laser safety glasses should have the frequencies of light that they block written/engraved on them, something like "750-1064nm OD 7+".
These home-made ones will not block light coming in from the side - don't forget that.
You'll know when you've been hit by a stray beam of light reflecting off something shiny, but by then it'll probably be too late.
This might be the stupidest video on youtube. Not only can you get cheap chinese goggles for $8, but this is totally fucking unsafe. On top of that the gels won't block the IR from green lasers and will bleach very quickly. Have fun with no eyesight.
Your 'getting the job done' is about as correct as suggesting you can substitute scotch-tape for seatbelts in a car.. *can* you? Yes. Will tape save you from injury or death in a crash? Hopefully, you know the CORRECT answer to that... I suggest you delete this misguided and misleading video, asap and educate yourself as-to laser safety, properly...
Your totally incorrect-advice is going to result in someone's vision being seriously damaged or them possibly blinded and you will get your * sued inside-out...Are you willing to risk the rest of your future on the 'correctness' of your information / suppositions, here?
Anyone watching this, please don't do this. If you look at 0:26, you notice the gel doesn't even cover the entire front portion of the goggles! If you're using a laser that requires safety goggles, use real, certified ones, for your own sake.
@PrototypeLPF If you notice, he keeps moving the laser around, why? Because, and you'll see this at 1:22, the laser burns through the gel in less than a second! Certified goggles can take a hit for more than a second, in fact it takes several seconds or longer to burn through.
@J0hnn3hBoi He's going to end up costing you money, optometrist visits can get very, very expensive. Save yourself a lot of hassle and buy real, certified safety glasses.
@PrototypeLPF Legal minimum requirement for breakdown is 10s of full exposure, or they fail certification. You'd struggle to get 100ms out of those "goggles".
This is a seriously bad idea, lighting gels are NOT suitable for blocking the power. As you can see, some green shines through, and this is not taking into consideration the melting effects at higher powers.
If you were considering doing this, think again - only certified goggles come close to guaranteeing your eyes will be safe. All these are good for is reducing glare and a false sense of security.
Don't believe me? Get a laser power meter and look at the percentage transmission at 500mW.
Would you be confident in substituting the primary red theatrical lighting gel for any other red coloured filter? Was there any reason why you chose this particular brand of colour filter? Thanks for your time :)
the red thing being the laser safety goggles? you cant buy them at some store, there specially designed laser safety goggles that you can ONLY find online, if you want to try and find them cheaply you can always try ebay/amazon...
It gets even worse. Green DPSS have significant IR on cheaper lasers. The gel filters pass 95% of the IR! You won't even know your eyes are being damaged ... until it is too late!
This is a large problem. If you have a near IR red laser you're getting no protection against a nearly full strength laser going straight at your eyes because you're "protected". You can't see it because it's IR yet it's still a full strength laser beam. You only get one set of eyes people, be careful. If you doubt me put your remote for your tv up to it and try and turn it on. It'll work fine....
@TekTakular careful dude IR filters are a bit scary i dont trust them that much but as you said they are better than nothing i guess :) anyways thanks for the vid :) very nice info and well made :)
They can last for quite a while, almost indefinitely. As long as you avoid direct contact with your eyes and DO NOT melt the gels on purpose you can use them as back up glasses or extras for friends for many many months. I do suggest that you buy at least one actual set of goggles though...
Ya, after making the vid I looked up a bit more info on the gels. These are in no way a PERMANENT solution, but rather a temporary one. As u can see at the beginning of the vid I do have professional goggles and those are the ones I use, The homemade ones are for friends who happen to visit. These help with (like u said) reflections and split second exposure.
It might be possible to obtain lighting gel in craft and art supply store, however in a day or two i'm going to add the website where i got mine in the description. so check back in a day or so.

Very bad idea, it'll offer very bad protection, and eventually get you blind for trusting thin gel to protect your eyes against high power laser.
Not to mention the 1:15 to 1:16. Who in sane mind would point the laser towards his face on purpose?!
