To people who don't understand this, here's my interpretation, although it might not be accurate. The story represents the life of the son. The change of sex in the prologue was probably something that happened during pregnancy. The mare might be another woman the dad had. All being a dream represents the wish of the son for it not to have happened. The key is sex, either abuse or the son found their parents doing stuff. The father wants freedom, makes the family lonely, etc.
