i don't understand. what does the speed glue ban to to affect the game? it seems to have affected wang hao and ryu's game a lot. why does it have such a big affect on penhold players?
@J0kerofHearts penholders rely heavily on massive forehand drives as their killer weapons especially the case with ryu and his korean penhold style.. his drives were a great threat to players with lightning speed but without the speed glue.. its like losing his spark in the game
Ma Long will never lose to Ryu again, I can say that. Ryu would be more efficient if he used the RPB, but he has a sick backhand as it is, I can grant him that.
Ma Long is one of the most talented players today, just perfect forehand and backhand... He's the new Wang Liqin, no doubt he still has a bright future before him.
I think ryu start to play bad after the olympics because he changed his blade to a much much heavier one. In 2004 he was ranked 2 then went all the way to 9 in the following years. His current blade is one of the heaviest out there.
ryu´s problem is his instability..ig he could p+lay allways like he played in the olympics, he would be nº1 no doubt and dominate...but he can play like a godlike beast, and he can play like a regular high ranked player, good, nothing special
He should really use the RPB. Not offence to any traditional penholder out there, but if you're in a critical situation, and you jsut can't reach the ball, you have a better chance of doing so with the RPB stroke.
Be reassured that Chinese will not show any mercy to him during the Olympics because of what happened in Athens. He has nearly no chance to win. I can tell you that.
@MeckelBot That Ryu would be number one and dominate if he consistently played on the Athens 2004 level. He wouldn't. Not even close. I can name 5-7 players who would still be better than him.
@MeckelBot Well, obviously Wang Liqin, Ma Lin and Wang Hao, and probably Boll and Samsonov as well. If we would transport 2004 Ryu into 2010, I would also add Ma Long (obviously) and Zhang Jike, but remove Samsonov.
was this game played during the ban of the speed glue......and ryu still beaten ma long?

I guess this means that Korea is a better table tennis nation than China these days.

@dooly3002 yes i agree. 40 mm ball and banning speed glue destroyed pen hold style. explosive forehand can't end the point anymore.

i love ryu's style. cant belive ma long is 16 here

RSM had the best footwork, insane forehand, and some decent backhand ;)
Ma Long had a better backhand, powerful forehand, but had still more to go, today, he is the best :D

I was talking about suffering from the ban in general. Not this game.

yea....ryu block is sick
PingMast 2 years ago
Ryu doesn't need an RPB, he has great footwork instead and a very powerful forehand plus very sick backhand blocks
bumpit011 3 years ago 11
@bumpit011 his backhand punch isn't bad either. he can do a decent traditional penhold backhand attack.

and if i recall, he won the last pro tour, chile... maybe hes waking up for the olympics ^^

his level at WTTC 2005 Shanghai was pitiful though.

Did i see a RPB out of Ryu there? Has he incorporated that into his game? The video is too fast for me to tell!
Senecart81 3 years ago
I don't think he can use RPB because he doesn't have a rubber on the other side. It would be difficult to pull off and it's also illegal.
MJGriftz 3 years ago
Yes I see that's not RPB now..Too bad he doesn't have one!
