  • the best film of 2009

  • @Janiel127

    dude hands down....

  • You're spot on. I couldn't have said it better myself. For me, while the Toy Story trilogy, Finding nemo and every other pixar film with the exception of Cars were exceptional, this for me just appeals to me more, which is why it is my favourite pixar film to date, my favourite animated film to date and one of my favourite movies to date. Well down Pixar, well done Pete Docter, well done Bob Peterson and well done everyone who worked on this masterpiece. You should be proud.

  • Cant wait to see the setting of Brave next year. :)

  • Pixar's films just get better and better and better, it's a shame Cars 2 wasn't as good as Up or even any of there previous films.

  • Love the "screw you" at the end.

  • oh yeah and brad bird said he'll punch the next person that calls cgi animated movies a genre.

  • a well deserved rating!

  • I love this film. It's hilarious and really touching. Also, I REALLY love this review! Do you ever take film review requests? I'd like to see your opinion on White Wedding from whiteweddingmovie. com. There are clips there but I'd like a larger review. GET BACK TO ME

  • This was the best movie ever!! My top favorite movies so far acctually are:

    1. Up

    2. Despicable Me

    3. Tangled

It's incredible how animation could be so great these days!

  • This was a very good film

  • the way he says "go love it".....is weird......to say the least.

  • Easily Pixar's most human, real and emotional film.

  • I LOVE this movie. I didn't really think it was very funny like most of Disney Pixar movies, but I thought the story was the most emotional, creative, and ingenious. It's SO good. :)

  • I was like "NOOOOOOOO" when John said that "Up" didn't live up to the hype, but was relieved when he said it exceeded expectations in every possible way. WOOT!!!

  • Awesome film, and very emotional to. Still had me feeling emotional after the movie, although I did not cry.

  • I cried in that openng scene

  • but animation isn't a genre... it's a film medium

  • Absolutely amazing film.

  • i can tell he cried because see the eyes

  • This movie made me cry more than laugh. I would adopt Russell. Lol (:

  • Is this more emotional than The Green Mile? :o I weeped over that movie..

  • got that shit on Blu-ray yeahhhh

that guys right though just because its animation doesn't mean its not good

  • Its a great movie but this review overstates it a little.

  • lol when you said "no it doesnt" i was like WTF!

but then you said "it exceeds it" then i was :o oh

  • There was tons of great symbolism in the film

The animation was mesmerizing, colorful, brilliant and exciting

The characters Carl and Ellie became lifelike and relatable

Judging by the first 20 minutes it may very well be one of the top 5 best films ive seen

HOWEVER, once the story progresses it becomes convoluted and a destraction to the scenes when Carl revisits the memory of his beloved... alas it was made primarly for a young audience

I would like to see an adult pixar film...

  • lol this was the only movie that made me cry more than 1 time!!! and i liked how pixar put something funny right after all of the sad parts to make you forget.

    awesome movie! 10/10!!!

  • UP is such a great movie! It made me cry for 2 hours straight.

  • I've just watched it and it's great, of course I fully agree wuth the review. 10/10

  • this was so emotional! it made me cry!

  • I love pixar as well, the best film producing studio in the world in my opinion.

'Up' wasn't a personal favourite of mine, but thats just my opinion.

  • funniest pixar filwas wall-se :P

  • how could u say that O-_-O

  • I agree with that fact that it was too short. If it was longer it would be alot better. But it is made for kids and kids cant really sit through a 2 and a half hour movie. However i didn't get bored. It was a very fun movie 8.6/10

  • As far as the story: Three guys, in South America, realize that life doesn't always work out as planned, I think the length is pretty good. I can't imagine, off the top of my head, more narrative that the story needed.

  • @ProserpinaFC Well i do feel is deserves an academy award nomination for best picture. Maybe not a win but it would be nice for once to see animated films get recognition

  • lol.... Didn't the Academy create the animated category out of response to the awesomeness of Pixar?

lol... Yeah, it'll be about time. I can't think of any particularly amazing films of 09. UP SHOULD WIN!

  • @ProserpinaFC Werent that many great films in 2009. But i hope Avatar doesn't take all the awards. I've yet so it though so idk

  • I haven't seen that yet cuz I gots no monies! I wil, though. If not now, when it comes out to the dollar show.

  • Yeah, I agree with everything you say John. The bird just made me laugh my ass off and the movie is hilarious. I just got it on DVD yesterday and it is (I think) Pixar's best. I love UP because it involves a ballooning oriented story and ballooning is my biggest hobby so I thought this was the perfect movie for me personally. I also agree that UP does deserve a 10/10. Perfect movie, not one bad part in it.

  • Like pretty much every movie Pixar has made, it's so much more than just an animated movie. It's completely authentic and a wonderful piece of storytelling. Despite the obvious lack of realism, it still packs a great emotional punch and it doesn't condescend to any audience of any age.

I think adults might appreciate this movie more than kids do, but it's also a great movie for kids.

    It's a magical movie.

  • my goodness its refreshing to here someone that is actually intelligent make a youtube vid. well spoken, 5 stars

  • I actually think that opening of Finding Nemo was more emotional than the opening of Up. If anything, not to say I did not feel emotion when the film opens, but I thought that the movie was slow in starting. Up is my 3rd favourite Pixar movie behind Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo.

  • Up was actually rather sad :(

But it had a VERY good ending, VERY VERY happy ending

  • man i loved this movie ... really well done

  • I totally agree with your review. I have not stopped thinking about this film since I saw it six days ago. Even now I still cry when I remember those touching moments. Like you said Up is perfect and as such could it not be classed as a masterpiece; I think so and why the hell not.

  • This film is fantastic definately the movie of the year by a mile

  • I'm seeing it on sunday

I thought it would be crap from what i saw in the trailer though

  • yeah ino pixar has terrible trailers course i dont see how you can make a trailer for up that really captures the movie, the trailer was terrible tho, just terrible i wasnt gunna see the movie at all but it was reccomended to me by a waitress when i was eating dinner thank you waitress!

  • Saw it today

    It was breathtaking

I almost fell a tear when he bought a ticket for his wife and him to south America but she couldn't walk up the hill and fainted and then died

    That was FUCKING sad

  • if you want realism dont watch an animated movie

  • You need to watch more Looney Tunes.

  • u dont understand my point of view

  • Hopefully I never ever degrade myself to your point of view.

  • your'e weird man

  • I loved this film! I'm buying it on release and am going to make all of my friends and family watch it!

  • i love up so powerful this will be my 3th year buying the pixar movie when it comes out

  • absolutely one of the best films in this year so far!

  • Up is now one of my top favourite movies now. I didn't think they could out due Wall-E. I can't wait till this hits dvd!!

  • I SAW IT TWICE =D

  • Holy Crap! A 10/10!!

  • Great review and I agree if you bully people because they go to see animated films than screw you. Great Movie. My Favorite pixar films are still Toy Story and Ratatouille but this isnt far from the top.

  • I TOTALLY AGREEEE with everything your saying amazing movie thats all i gotta say about it.

  • ya this is like the BEST pixar film

    i saw it in 3D

    total 10/10

i rlly want to see the characters again but i dnt thnk it needs a sequal

but who knos maybe a sequal culd work idk

    DOUG was the best

every time he was on screen i jus had the biggest smile on my face : )

  • you:does it reach the bar that pixar has set up?

    no.

    Me:YOU FUCKING IDI-

    you:it exceeds it

    me:oh, go on.

  • Great review; agreed with everything you commented on. It really is a perfect movie.

...However, as Brad Bird said in the commentary for "The Incredibles", animation isn't a genre. Horror and Western are genres; animation is an art form.

    Anyway, wonderful review!

  • lol i was to scared to watch "up" when it came to town becouse it was a cartoon ,and i didnt wunna be cought watching it without a little kid *sigh* ill whate till it comes to dvd

  • you'll be surprise that you will hear adults laughing more than the kids do in the theater i tell you.

  • this is not a kids movie. Carl Fredrickson is an awesome adult character.

  • I loved UP. It was really a beautiful film.

  • UP doesnt come out in the UK until October, but I will definately go and see it now. Thanks!

  • I'm sorry you have to wait, it really is touching.

  • Ah dude I agree! The beginning was like soooo sad!!!! I almost cried but I was w/ my friends so I didn't but it was like VERY EMOTIONAL!!!!

  • Up is a good movie and so is Pixar but to me DreamWorks Animation SKG is better. You could not compare Up to Kung Fu Panda becuase Kung Fu Panda would win easily.I like Pixar and DreamWorks Animation SKG. Don't get me wrong because my first CGI film that I ever seen was Toy Story and I loved it when I was a little kid.

  • I've loved all of the Pixar movies so far, but "Up" fell pretty short for me. The villain was too intense, and the flow was awkward and hard to become totally invested in. It was too emotional too soon.

  • I will say "Ratatouille" made me laugh more, but "Up" is a dramatically superior film.

This review made me re-subscribe to you, good job.

  • you need to do something better.

  • Better than a perfect 10?

  • i think it's just perfect ten.

  • What do you mean "just"? 10 means perfect. "Just" would be a nine.

  • sorry, didn't know.but i really give it a perfect ten.the movie never bored me for even less than a minute.

  • ........................what?

  • i was talking to a bad troll, not to the guy who made this video.

  • Hi John,

Just out of curiosity what other movies did you give a perfect score? Just out of curiosity.

    Thanks for the review.

  • This is my second favorite pixar film with finding nemo at number 1 still since it came out, but this movie is the closest that any other movies come to getting past it, it was well done all around, i saw it on opening night in 3d and i only saw one little problem with the 3d, a MUST see if you already havent, and i suggest when it comes out that you get the special edition, i love watching the way these movies were made.

  • UP is better then Monster's vs Alien's! =P

Monster's vs Alien's is so stupid and boring.. = l

  • Pixar is awesome.

  • Pixar at its best!

  • i loved that movie so much i went to see it today and i cried 3 times it such a good movie ^^

  • i know! it made me cry twice! and i went to see this with a friend of mine and i was embarrased because i didn't want nim to see that i was crying! but this is probably one of my favorites of their's but of course if it's pixar it good you know? this movie was awesome! for those of you who haven't seen it GO SEE IT!!!

  • No movie is perfect, but this one is pretty close.

  • I totally agree. 100%. So emotional, touching, visually stunning, and absolutely hilarious.

  • meh. Up was very funny, well animated, and very emotional. I won't deny it, but I didn't fall in love with it the way this guy did. I didn't really like the bird (the name they used escapes me.) Russel works well as a foil for Carl, but I didn't really care for him either. That said, the emotion, especially in that opening really got me, and everything that involved the dogs was terrific. I can't say anything bad about Up, but it wasn't my favorite ever movie.

  • Perfect.

    That sounds about right.

  • haha i was like, JESUS CHRIST! when he said no it doesnt

  • i agree. It was the best film i've seen this year. Maybe pixars best.

  • Great review, although I do dissagree with you on one thing, which has been made clear by the Pixar people ove the years, animation is a medium not a genre. Besides that little slip of the tougne I agree with you 100% I don't know anyone who doesn't like Up... well, maybe my dad but, whatever.

  • I agree that the trailer is good since it doesn't spoil the film too much... unlike Terminator Salvation... trailer fucking ruined it. The whole time we KNEW he was a machine/human hybrid... fucking spoiler.

  • I love how the trailers that make don't really show a lot. But when you watch the movie, it shows everything and more! Pixar is amazing. Ellie is awesome as well.

  • I love Pixar, too. I went to every Pixar film in the theatres from Ratatouille on.

  • instaclassic

  • i subscribe. good review

  • I agree! It totally exceeded my expectations. I was bawling half the time, too! Such a beautiful film!

  • All PIXAR films are just, amazing!

  • I would like to point out Cars, deffinately diddn't do it for me. I think that other than that all other Pixar films are FTW.

  • I want to see this but i'm 16 and it might look a little weird

  • same here

  • Hey, I went with a group of my brother's friends, and all of them--my brother included--were over 18. This movie is superb. Don't be afraid to see it because it's animated.

  • Who gives a crap, tomorrow I'm going with another 14 year old and an 18 year old. We just love Pixar. Big woop.

  • I'm 20 and I LOVE these movies!

  • My boyfriend (20) and myself (18) both went to see this movie. The only way you'll look wierd is by not going to see it.

  • ^

    Above post made by me.

(stupid sister using my computer and not logging off her account!)

  • Kroze117 and soundsilence just use this excuse if anyone asks you: IT'S PIXAR

  • Omg, my heart jumped when you said "no, it doesn't". I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie though, it looks fantastic.

  • same lol

  • he said its better tho?
