What almost everyone has seemed to miss regarding the Book of Abraham, is that Joseph Smith may have been correcting the Egyptian texts as well as translating them.
"The previous mission president picked us up from the airport that was teeming with people," she said. "And of course the smell is the first thing that hits you because there's garbage everywhere, just rotting garbage.
"As we drove up to the mission home, I had been led to believe it was in an upscale neighborhood but there are pigs and chickens and goats everywhere, and people are scrambling for water."
I like that this guy is not some slick-talking preacher using emotion and dramatic music to make his point. You can tell he's a soft-spoken scientist and a smart one at that.
Also, if Michael Rhodes is not an Egyptologist, then I would like to know what his trasnlation of the Hor Book of Breathings is doing on the University of Chicago, online book store.
This guy can rationalize all day about what he doesn't like in the DVD. There is one hard fact that proves Joseph Smith a fraud.
Every Mormon has three facsimiles in their quad, with numbered references to Joseph's "translation" of the hieroglyphics. JS missed the translation by a mile. It's obvious he just guessed at the meaning based on the pictures.
If JS bungled the translation of what we have and can check, how can you possibly trust his "translation" of mysteriously missing documents?
If you study egyptian iconography from sources that don't mention Joseph Smith, it will become pretty clear that 1)Many of Joseph's explanations are not egyptological and 2)many of them are. How that affects your theology is a different matter.
Personally, I look at it as, how could he get anything right when nothing was known at the time about Egpytology? If he got one thing right, that would be impressive, but we have quite a bit right, which would be near impossible to do without a higher powers help.
Time vindicates the Prophets. The hits can be explained by divine or satanic inspiriation. The "misses", I just kick back and say "wait and see". A perfect example of this is Leiden 384. "Lion couches, mummies and Anubis have nothing to do with Abraham", oh really?
Critics however, like to look at the Hor BoB in a vacume and never want anyone to look at other papyri from the same time period, much less the same family. Heaven forbid you also show examples of egyptian/jewish syncretism like the Anastasi cache, or the Testament of Abraham. They want their audiences to be like blinder wearing horses.
@Kolohe86786876786786 The problem with your statement is that "common known" usage of Egyptian that standard Egytologists know is not the same as knowing all the various Egyptian texts and how such would actually relate to the Book of Abraham by Joseph Smith. Thus, what you have stated is a falsehood because there DOES exist many evidences of what Joseph did of having existed in Egyptian times and/or in relation to Abraham.
Oh wow. I can't believe how psycho this is.

The sights and smells awaiting Sister Miller upon her arrival to Haiti in July 1998 are forever ingrained into her memory.

why don't you give specific examples of a specific translation from the facsimiles and your belief of what the correct translation is?
We can go over them one by one!
