Both necks had a locking nut on them. Like for a Floyd rose.( Not locked down of course, othewise he wouldntve been able do do the dive bomb with the tuner.) but there was no trem to go along with either of them... My only guess for the reasoning on this is that Paul likes the biting tone that the steel gives when playing open string. But even still... thats odd. its a ton of un-neseccary work to put a locking nut into a guitar that doesnt even have a wammy bar.

Yeah, man... Look at his picking hand, his having to do some pretty intense string skips with his picking method... If he were to have all 6 strings attached, it'll be real easy too accidentally pick the wrong string, and increase the likely hood of him making a mistake... I believe his got 4 strings on all in a non-standard tuning, to make it a lot easier to play... If he played it on a standard tuning 6-string guitar, then he'd have to fret some pretty obscure and difficult fret positioning.

There are only three strings, tuned to E in descending/ascending octaves depending on how you look at it. It's basically a simpler way to play arpeggios, with the human capo anyway. Without, it's not the easiest thing.
