@michaelpriest its not a question of her voice, she does have a really nice strong voice. But the song itself is from Oliver! the musical. which is set in 1837. The song is written to fit that kind of era music as heard in pubs (Nancy, the character is a pub singer/ barmaid) even if she isn't singing in the pub at that moment.
By jazzing it up, it just takes that away from it. and it sucks since its one of my faves from oliver!

Simon can be such an idiot...a boring song? This is one of the most powerful and beautiful ballads from musical theater! I figured out why melinda sings so well, it's because she she doesn't have a neck... she doesn't have a throat to inhibit her voice, so it comes straight from her diaphragm to, and out of her mouth.
Season 6 , I can't even remember who won. However, I can only remember Melinda Doolittle who by the way was by far the best performer, singer, and vocalist...PERIOD!! I wanted her to win too but it doesnt matter. Today's headline is Daughtry makes Idol history by having two consecutive #1 albums and he didnt win either. Mandisa came in ninth and has been nominated for a Grammy not to mention Jennifer Hudson and others. Melinda is a star regardless!
Yeah, the most marketable one wins. I wish Melinda could have won but she was less marketable than Jordin Sparks. The producers just wanted someone young and beautiful because they think thats what young people want. But Melinda was definitely the best singer in the competition.
yeah it was really unfortunate she competed same year as several other powerhouse performers like Jordin and Lakisha, had she been on this year she would have wiped the floor with everyone else!

I can tell you why simply. Idol is a mirror of high school. The prom queen, cool brother,, the wholesome boy with the corn fed looks and demeanor. Mellisa is the one sitting at the geeks table during lunch. Intelligent, talented, supernice but not one of the "cool kids" Jordon was the beauty queen, Blake the wanna be black kid who is just hip enough to carry it off. In the end tho, doesnt the geek win the great race of life? So it will be with Melinda. I already bought her first CD.
She is one reason they put in the judges save. Why didn't she win? Because everyone thought she would so did not vote for her.

but I know Idol singers take songs out of context. I guess it's ok
but we all know this song was written for a charachter in the musical Oliver who is singing about her abusive boyfriend who eventualy beats her death in the second act. Where's the depseration.

I was just stating my opinion, and no matter what you guys say, I'm not gonna change it. there's no problem with us having different tastes in music, is there? that's what the show's supposed to be about. the person that more people like wins. that's just how it works, whether you guys want to admit it or not. if you don't care what I think, then I really don't care what you think either, so why should either of us waste our time?

Any 'arsehole' who say's they don't like MELINDA DOOLITTLE has not a clue about great singing. She is probably the BEST singer to have emerged in the last 20 years in popular music.

Unfortunately Melinda has decided to go with a limited venue. A voice like hers needs to be on the big stage yet according to her web site she does private concerts and small town concerts and appearances at Pidgeon Forge Tenn. You never see her on the music awards shows. I think she is religious and she watches where she performs

You are right. I'm going to write an open letter to the Press about Simon Cowal not taking on Melina when he knew as everyone else in the music busines that she should have won that years A I. As it tuns out, it's not a singing contest but a popularity contest. Same goes for the incredible singer Adam Lambert.

yes, she's great and all, and I know you guys are gonna hate me for saying this, but I didn't like her then and I still don't. she missed the whole purpose of the song. it's not supposed to be just another love song. in Oliver, Nancy sings it after Bill hits her to say that no matter how badly he treats her, she'll stay with him because she loves him. frankly, I don't think that's how Melinda's communicating it, and that kind of defeats the whole purpose of the song.

@Ash -- Harsh judgement you've imposed on one of the best singers of our time. You've missed the point yourself. Every artist brings their own flavor to a song and she did so brilliantly. Now, you sat here critiquing her for one song you claim you didn't like, then go on to say you still don't like her. How judgmental is that?
So, if you went to a doctor and weren't cured you would you continue to judge the doctor?

@LaNg okay, you definitely missed the point of that. I'm not judging her based on this one song. I watched all through season 6 and I wasn't a huge fan of any of Melinda's performances. have you ever seen Oliver? it's just incredibly out of context here, and I don't see anything wrong with pointing that out.
I personally don't consider Melinda "one of the best singers of our time," but hey, that's just me. I'm glad she brought her own flavor to it, but it just seemed out of place to me.

With all due respect, you're not watching Oliver. This isn't a play, it's American Idol. Should she have danced? Worn a costume? It's a singing contest not a do as I do contest. It's her heart behind the song. Millions of people and the judges can't all be wrong, so we have to assume the minority is. I mean these judges couldn't praise her enough, even Simon for Pete sakes. He compared her to Gladys Knight, one of the greatest singers of our time, which Id' say makes her one of the greats.

Opinion can absolutely be wrong. You said earlier "I don't like her" yet right before that you say she's great. You say you didn't like any of her songs. If someone's great & you don't like them then how are you right? Perhaps you don't like those who sing great? Or are you telling me she missed the point in every song? I can see not liking one song, but all? Yet you say she's great & still you don't like her to this day? So, your opinion is great is not good? I think you missed the point Ash.

well, I don't like her. just because she's great doesn't mean I have to like her. she has a good voice, but it's not my style, so I don't particularly like it. I don't remember every song she sang that season- maybe there was one or two that I did like. you're not gonna convince me to change my opinion, but if it makes you feel better to try, then so be it.

I do not usually watch American Idol but the year Melinda was there I watched it every week.

this is a frickin' MASTERPIECE--hall of fame performance, so much emotion, just tears the house down.............no one can touch this one!!! ..........her body language at the end when she points her hand...........who wouldn't want to be that guy she is standing behind in that song.......just wow, wow, wow!!! the inner beauty she projects in that song makes her a 10.

I wanted her to win too but it doesnt matter. Today's headline is Daughtry makes Idol history by having two consecutive #1 albums and he didnt win either. Mandisa came in ninth and has been nominated for a Grammy not to mention Jennifer Hudson and others. Melinda is a star regardless!

Yeah, the most marketable one wins. I wish Melinda could have won but she was less marketable than Jordin Sparks. The producers just wanted someone young and beautiful because they think thats what young people want. But Melinda was definitely the best singer in the competition.

I can tell you why simply. Idol is a mirror of high school. The prom queen, cool brother,, the wholesome boy with the corn fed looks and demeanor. Mellisa is the one sitting at the geeks table during lunch. Intelligent, talented, supernice but not one of the "cool kids" Jordon was the beauty queen, Blake the wanna be black kid who is just hip enough to carry it off. In the end tho, doesnt the geek win the great race of life? So it will be with Melinda. I already bought her first CD.
