I wanted to tell you something. To fully use 1.8 mechanics/generation you NEED a new world. Notch said so himself that 1.7 (or earlier) worlds are not compatable with 1.8. It won't generate the NPC villages, etc.

I'm going to make a underground evacuation center underground with walls and floors of wool two layers thick and obsidian behind that three layers thick. It will have to be pretty low but the stairs are going to be hidden by pistons that will be triggered by the Evacuate button in the mayor's office revealing the staircase. Pretty sweet. (The system will be wired through all the buildings)
