@DrCruel and thoughts instead of being told to abide by certain "truths" established by a priveleged minority. Why do you think the media almost always publishes a story when an Arab commits a suicide bombing but then doesn't mention or even puts a positive spin on Israeli actions against against their neighbors? The media is putting its own spin on things so that the populace is united by false "truths" and the elite remain in power. Just look at how Hitler maintained his state.
@DrCruel He is NOT saying that. He is not calling for some communist classless system to replace our current one. In fact Chomsky is probably one of the most anti-communist figures out there. He is saying that the owners of mass media primarily as well as corporate CEOs are in effect the social managers. They set policy through control of the media as well as congressional lobbying. All he is calling for is for individual communities and human beings to be able to control their own lives
"Modern industrial society has led to individual public gain. People think this is good, but it's really bad, because letting individuals prosper on their own merits leads to global destruction. If a class of capitalist entrepreneurs dominate society, then humanity is doomed, which is why an unspoken class of social managers should run things instead.
You know. People like me, Noam Chomsky."
What a self-absorbed jerk. This is how Eastern Europe got like it is.
@gratex Or someone who actually listens to what this jerk says, instead of genuflecting at his feet in abject worship.
But don't feel bad, as I get this kind of abuse stream from his mindless Left-wing sycophantic cultists in lieu of an honest counterpoint. I don't expect anything better from you lot, so no worries.
Norm Chomsky eloquently and accurately describes the problem. Then goes right on working at MIT!? What is HE waiting for, a 100% consensus? If no one is willing to DEMONSTRATE how an alternative to our "materialistic society" would work, would look like, why would anyone believe him/us? This isn't just about Chomsky, it's about everyone/us who would criticize, gripe about "the system" and yet not come together with others of like mind and LIVE an alternative.
it is not the points he conveys that are sad but the soundtrack of this video. Chomsky is merely conveying certain economic and philosophical points with minor speculations for the future of the world economy. also, no one seems to care? so why are you viewing this video? what about the audience listening to him? care about what?
@nemesisnick66 It's sad how deliberately hypocritical and wrong he is, yet how otherwise sane people still repeatedly fall for his neo-fascist socialist memes.
As he has done for decades, Chomsky focuses on the most important issues and supports his arguments with great depth of analysis and reason. His work is so solid that it does not lose it's validity over the years. This talk is a case in point. It was given over 15 years ago, before the topics of climate crisis and global warming finally broke into the American mainstream.
Words which have a Latin root were originally properly spelt/Spelled with an "s", and words with a Greek root took a "z". Although Civilisation is a Latin root from 'ciuilis', civilization is still acceptable. Yes, this is true. Thousands of words in English vary from region to region and dialects.
either *something that clearly isn't going to happen* or, -we're screwed-.

Let me summarize:

you spelt civilization wrong.
but other than that, good video.
Cheesymcnoodle 4 years ago
You spelled *spelled* wrong, unless you're referring to a "A hardy wheat grown mostly in Europe". And "civilisation" IS the correct spelling.
Arkinight 4 years ago
It actually works either way for both words. Spelt is just the irregular form. So you are both correct.
Stromjir 3 years ago 2
Both versions of both words are accepted.

No, this is not true.
