Mike Love; The Beach Boy everybody loves to hate. I don't mind him, he wrote some great lyrics, and you wouldn't have the beach boys without his voice.
After watching this I find it impossible to believe that Mike Love didn't buy a bass guitar and a piano before spending tons of money on lessons for both in hopes that he could finally be content on stage!
@Johnny1Reggae it's nice to see Al get some love. It's easy to get overshadowed in a group like that. He can't go as high as Brian, but he has a very nice mid-high voice somewhat similar to Carl's (pitch or tone wise that is (not sure the correct word)). He's like that backup QB who never complains, but he was always there when they needed him to do whatever Job he needed. He was the one constant that I think held the group together more than is evident. Poor guy probably got stuck playing both
mike love at this time was really into transcendental meditation or TM for short taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who also taught the beatles as well as beach boys
I think it's a shame that Al Jardine didn't sing lead on more Beach Boys songs than he did - he has a really good live voice. I think Mike has a good bass backing voice, but as a lead vocalist I rate Al Jardine higher than Mike.
this is awesome footage...hey jammon, uh Mike is one of the lead vocalists of The Beach Boys not to mention one of the best bass singers ever so I guess that's why he's there! you're the fucking idiot
Al does not really fit the vocal for wouldnt it be nice its more carl , but still a nicer effort and thr backing is still friggin amazing to pick those harmonies up with bruce, carl and john the baptist .. ha ha
Brian had quit from touring long before this after having a nervous breakdown on tour. By this point, he had become a shut-in due to his paranoia and insanity.
@jammmon Your gross comments are so bizarre. Do you remember Brian actually QUIT touring? Plus all the drug use that eventually came into play.....not sure why the guy is looked at as a freeken saint. Mike Love didn't abuse drugs and was the driving force behind the commercial appeal of The Beach Boys.
who keeps going WHOO! - Bruce (?) - I thought he didn't get high - I think he got a contact high from being too close to Mike as his performance is very sloppy - out of character for sure - thank god they have Ed Carter on this tour helping out
@DonZabu eh thirty years afterwards he sued for lyrics which he decided he could not remember exactly what he wrote,,great lead singer, i dont think he was close to covering any great vocal range like carl or brian. end of story
don't forget the guy had the idea for the chorus of good vibrations, probably his greatest musical contribution, for that alone he deserves to be accepted as talented.
@DonZabu I would say he is not COMPLETELY untalented, but to be considered a GREAT lead singer (or even good) you can't consistently sound flat and off-pitch during live performances.
As an aside, I've met him in person and he is indeed a dirty asshole. He was looking my 22 year-old girl friend up and down and hitting on her in front of me and he's 71. No shame.
He also "wrote" no music on his own. Suggesting something to the composer is not writing even though you get royalties. Who agrees?
@DonZabu great lead singer? you are smokin crack! as chuck negron of three dog night said, "mike love manipulated brian into giving him a job no other band would ever do-make him a lead singer." he was the source of a 40+ year conflict for power in the beach boys between the wilsons and the rest of the band. it was so bad that one of the former members i spoke with said the 5 years he spent with the beach boys aged him 10 years due to mike. he cant sing, dance, or write a song to save his life.

mike still was a good lead singer for them, his voice was perfect for the music they made, his bass was the PERFECT opposite to brians falsetto, the man also had the idea for the good vibrations chorus and for the lyrics that fit the melody much better than the original ones.
i don't like his as a person, but as a singer he was perfect for the band.
the perfect bass for the voices of carl and brian.
@mdefil23 its funny cos because all i mentioned above is true but you choose to ignore it and not defend his actions.. and mike love is the most negative guy i know by going to court how many times to sue brian, or al or someone and also six marriages............... yes what a nice guy,
Never mind about the lost concert show DVD this bit of footage here is a truly lost one !There is little footage from this era late 60s in there live performances !Only audio! So this is well special thanks for posting puts some more bits of the puzzle together !Thanks
this should be put out on dvd - quite an odd show with all the horns - the drum track on Do it Again - great video - Id rather watch this than Knebworth again...
Mike Love's legendary fashion sense on full display.
Carl Wilson is one The Very Best That Ever Was and don't You any of you EVER forget THAT. What a shame that he never got The Ink he deserved because Carl was as much a Voice Of The 1960's as Cass Elliot or John and Paul.
Carl's in a Very Elite Group of Vocalists from a Very Elite Era.
Darlin' was first song I ever saw performed in '67 in Ft Worth,Tx and it just blew me away at age 9. Carl sings with such passion. It's still my fav song, even today it is BB best live song as John Cowsill pays tribute to Carl with strong soulful vocals.
What an awful video to have awful sound.
