  • i am russin (ruthenian not russian) and have to say slavic language is very dificult in

way of correct pronouncing (for example in ou ruthenian language is four ways how to say I (i И І Ы Ї) so have mercy with thous poor yenkies.....but i have to say that we do care how to correct pronounce the English or German names so they at last should tray to do the same

  • same thing with semin its siomin, fedorov is fjodorov morozov is marozov, the americans think it sounds cooler i guess to say it the way they do or sumthing

  • I always thought alexander ovechkin was pronounced "Crosby's Father"

  • they sound drunk

  • Nice lesson!

  • 0:27 .... im not sleeping tonight....scared the shit out of me

  • I think your videos would be more helpful and less polarizing if you guys weren't so angry on screen! It's pretty abrasive.

On the subject of properly pronouncing Russian hockey names, I think one must take into account that some of these players purposely anglicize their names. Example: Aleksandr "Semin" was purposely written as so. When Ovechkin gives English interviews, he pronounces his teammate's name, "Semin," not "Syomin."

  • Why you mad though?

  • This guy is way too angry...

  • People pronounce my last name wrong all the time. I don't think Ovi cares. Besides, Ah-vi doesn't sound as good

  • That is one hot Russian chick.

  • rofl people pronounce foreign names the way they ARE WRITTEN -------> players should care about their names being written correctly to fit foregn language. In russian if "O" isnt accented then its pronounced like russian "A". So ,correct me if im wrong, it should be something like Ahvechkin :)

  • @temmy69 Yes, Ahvechkin is more correct that "O." I agree, players should spell their names in English as they wish it pronounced. It is absolutely insane to have "Satan" when what he mean is "Chetan!"

  • @NoNewsNews Ye! Thats what im talking about! :))

  • @NoNewsNews

It is Shatan;) Šatan, so use SH instead of CH.

but i think it is alright to pronounce the names in the way as it happens now

  • not bad, really

  • pronounce Le-a and Jeaushkie

  • pronounce Jheshkie

  • that girl actually looks pretty hot haha :)

  • she sounds irish when she says ovechkin OOOOOvechkin

  • shes drunk

  • Well maybe if u had simpler names we would be able to say it correctly.

  • Ahveechkin.

  • wow, i am sorry but this girl does not know what she is talking about learn russian. OVECHKA from the word sheep there is no A in it. go back to school

  • Well, first she is Russian, second since several thousand people have seen the video and no Russian has disagreed with her statement, I guess you should go back to school, although learning a language in school is next to impossible, but good luck.

  • @NoNewsNews do u know russian ????? r u russian? no so dont even comment and defend her. ask her from what word does his last name come from овечка -овца́ there is no A sound in it.

  • @rumit55

    [авечка] [авца]

Only northern russians pronounce unstressed "o" like "o". Most of us say "a".

  • @Timuriy a ny tAgda panyatna v kAkuu tu xadil shkAly,

  • @Timuriy ladno tu poslushai kak ona iskareghula imya, a potom zdes vse oslu nazuvaut ego tak Avechkin ladno udachi

  • @rumit55

Ты откуда? Из Вологды что ли? В Москве, в Питере, Уфе, Туле, Калуге говорят как на видео. И Букварь так учит.

  • In sweden we pronounce it "the russian guy who just scored"

  • @floggingmolly4evah LOL! XD

  • Why does all the Russian names sound like someone is slapping you in the face with an electric flyswatter? The american way of pronouncing Ovechkin is like calm and cool, and this way here is like... well like i said before

  • The Russian language was actually based on the flyswatter. When the electric one was introduced, the Russian language was updated to conform.

  • @NoNewsNews

    I bet!

  • Bull shit... They prounouced it right its a aw sound

  • Actually i still think its an ovechkin, this is his name in cyleric as you can see Александр Овечкин the first name in english would be pronounced as Aleksandr. The O is pronounced as Oh. so why with the Aeyvitchkin?

  • she sounds irish

  • lOTS O BEER... HMMM

  • wow! u guys fucking drunken basterds! WOW!

  • V-A-R-L-A-M-O-V!!!

  • it does not matter how you pronounce it . is diffrent here then in russia. all that matters is he is a good hockey player.

  • @veno09 It is a disgrace that North Americans refuse to pronounce foreign names correctly. Ovechkin would be twice the player if he felt the respect he deserves!!!!

  • alexsander avechken is how they saying it lol

  • Овечкин лошара, Ovechkin is bullshit

  • i think it is up to Ovechkin if he want people to pronounce his name with an o or a some people even in the same family pronounce their last name differently i know my family does

  • we just say OVI.

  • @veno09 apparently its AVI

  • @veno09 well i guess now it's avi lol

  • NNN, my circles and i've been calling him Ah-vechkin ever since i found this video with 100 or so views. hilarious it is growing and of course, you are correct, sir.

  • Wow, they need to chill pill.. Sorry we are not European or whatever.. but seriously why is it such a big deal?

  • There is no bigger deal. Calling Avechkin, Ovechkin because the russian letter that begins his name happens to look like an "O," demonstrates an appalling ignorance that simply can not be ignored.

  • In North America his last name is Ovechkin, in Russia and other Countries I'm sure its with the "A" sound. If you were to say my last name in Europe it would sound weird too.... You need to get over it! lol

  • Did you see Ovechkin's check of Jagr during the Olympics? It seems to me the guy deserves to have his name pronounced correctly. Or just call him "some Russian guy with the puck!"

  • Comment removed

  • @NoNewsNews: It really is just an honest mistake. The Russian "O" is pronounced differently depending on whether it's stressed or unstressed in the word it appears. Even learning the Cyrillic alphabet would not help because stress marks are not written in Russian (except in text meant for children or Russian language students). I think it's great you want to educate people, but it's not anything to get angry about. . .unless of course they refuse to start saying his name the right way. o_0

  • пьяная русская девушка, рассказывает, как правильно произносить имя овечкина ))))))))))))))))

  • Aaavechkin...Oooovechkin...who cares...that russian girl is smokin hot....and that accent.....i'll get his name wrong on purpose just to see her get mad and hear her correct me....

  • Вообще-то американцы приавильнее произносят)). Надо "окать", хоть это и смешно щас звучит). Просто если говорить Авечкин, кто-то может и написть так, а это уже другая фамилия будет

  • Also, Evgenii Nabokov's name is often butchered - His name is stressed like this: EvGYEnii (Евгений) NabOkov (the 'o' is pronounced a little bit like the word 'or') (Набоков)

  • The first 'o' isn't stressed, the stress falls on 'e' = OvEchkin

  • красивая девушка!! овечкин вперед!!!

  • bert farve?

  • no one cares

  • Everyone cares profoundly. There are few things in life as important.

  • Not really..lol Im sure PETA and the WWF can find things more important than pronoucing Alex's name in North America.

  • lol

  • Well... Ovechkin's name also starts with in "O" in Russian, but many times the Russian "O" is pronounce as if it were a Russian "A"... This is not the case in English... so that may solve part of the issue... but almost all Russian and other foreign names are pronounced differently in English. I know for a fact that English names are pronounced differently in Russian. i.e. Michael Jordan... My name is Alexander, and I prefer that to the "aleksandr" ... Really it's not that big of a deal.

  • I am afraid it is a big deal. The "O" in Ovechkin is an "A." I can think of no bigger deal!

  • shes hot

  • Who the fuck cares? They are playing hockey in the US, we speak english in the US, so it makes sense to say Ovechkin.

  • Around Montreal, the analysts take time to ask the player himself how his name must be pronounced.

Learn that it is annoying to hear pronounciation mistakes in your own language, especially big ones.

English speakers always screw the pronunciation of foreign words and names because english is poor in sounds variety.

I laugh when I hear them use the expressions:

à la mode or plat de résistance.

  • If you get a 124 million signing bonus, you better pronounce his name correctly. Three 50 goal season, Ovechkin is unstoppable. Plus Pronouncing Russian is hard for people who don't know the language, its a good start to pronounce names that are Russian

  • GAY......OOOOOvechkin get it right,

  • Theres also Ko VAL chook and semyon VAR LAA MARV. and Nikolai HABIBI BULL IN. thats how u pronounce there names as well.

  • Actually O-O-vechkin is pretty much valid and classic pronunciation in Russian as well. In modern Russian first O in many regions sounds like "A", but if you say "O", nobody will blame you for that. :) And Varlamov is VAHR-LAH-MOV, not MARV.

  • Ovechkin ..Avechkin ...

you guys pronounce it right ... almost the same as original prononciation

  • americans are so dumb they cant even pronounce varlamov, ovechkin, radulov, kovalchuck. I am surprised they pronounce datsyuk and malkin right.

  • no Ovechkin every time i hear him...

BUT... no matter how you pronounce his name he is still MVP 2 YEARS IN A ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Backstromgrl1219 and he choke in playoff muahahha go habs go

  • @deathnotefan18 i dont see and habs nominated for MVP this year

  • @Backstromgrl1219 lol mv..who look all 3 nominated this year sedin dominate all year long come to playoff ...CHOKEE.sidney crosby vs sens he was unbelievable ..againts the habs CHOKEE and u know what happened to ovechiken so i prefer have real player in the playoff than all this 3 choker lolll

  • @deathnotefan18 gOOD ONE HOW MANY POINTS DID ur CROSBY GOT VS habS?

  • @rumit55 haha im not a ffkn faggety pens fan im habs fans and btw..i think he got 2 points..2 pints crosby 10 points ovechkin for the first 5 games only!!!!!!! after Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • it's not bullshit idiot, i'm russian an the correct pronunciation is Aeyvitchkin. dumb american.

  • Dude, I'm Russian too and before teaching somebody, you better learn how to transliterate, transcript and spell, because your pronunciation does not make any sense in English and Russian whatsoever. In modern Russian it's Ah-Vech-Kin. You'll kill yourself trying pronounce Aey... Geeze. Sorry folks, not all Russian are dumb as this one.

  • Omg, the girl looks so angry because we don't pronounce a name correctly...

  • Ahveechkin? Holy sheeeet.

  • It's buuulllshiiit

His name you can pronounce "a" and "o"/ both correct

    i'm now because russian

  • To the lady in blue, stop whining. It would be nice if one is from a foreign country, to have his/ her name pronounce properly, but you have to except that something people will pronounce your name wrong, if they speak a different language, then you.

  • Pretty Russian girl.

  • She sounds like a leprechaun first of all and the 'O' in Russian is not always pronounced like an 'a'... hence the reason the cyrillic alphabet has an 'a' as well... p.s. us Americans do not care.

  • хахаха Авечкин :D

  • i like saying it ooovechkin

  • was she like drunk or something

  • Give me a freakin' break. What's up with Russian's obsession with pronouncing their names "correctly"?

It doesn't matter how you say it. It is wrong to them. Not just Russian's either. But seriously, who gives a crap?

  • @stinkydrawers29 Actually, all people from english speaking countries are completely useless in pronouncing names right. It does matter. I don't want to be called something that isn't my name.

  • seriously, i'd say whatever she wanted me to say

  • That chick is right

  • hey every time he is interviewed and they introduce him he doesn't correct anybody so that might be the way it's said and i'm not going to take the word of some dumb bitch that didn't even remember his first name so until he says we're wrong i'm saying Ovechkin

  • OVEN CHICKEN.

  • What about the "v"? Every Russian I've ever talked to (I know a few) simply cannot pronounce a "v" to save their lives, it's always a "w".

  • His short name is not Alex. His short name is Sasha or Shurik

  • Correct..

  • Ever heard an American pronounce Moscow..............?

  • I'm from America. You know, the place where Russian's come and pretend to be American but still pronounce name's in russian accent.... IDIOTS,,,,,

  • Idiots...... go back to Russia then.....

  • Go back to Britain idiot.

  • If I ever end up at a party with these a**holes, please shoot me.

  • It's true that in Russian it's pronounced Avechkin because anywhere there's a letter O we say A, but it's not a big deal really. There are tons of NHL players whose names are mispronounced in English a lot worse. For example, Boston's Slovakian D Zdeno Chara is not Chah-rah, but Ha-rah with the first sound being a hard H like the first sound in Khabibulin (Chicago's Russian goalie).

  • i just call him god

  • it's true.. this man has no dick

  • you should learn english if you know a thing or two about it. english letters, what are they? хиллбиллы!

  • Shes so hot!

  • lol fun video

  • Its quite simple really

In some words we pronounce the written russian "О" as the russian "А"

Both the russian "O" and "A" sound different than the english ones (btw the "O" in russian sounds nothing like "A" (2 pantibandit1233))

The written "Овечкин" is pronounced "Авечкин"

(The written Ovechkin is pronounced Avechkin)

  • ok every1 hold up. The reason his name is pronounced with an "O" in english is probably because in russian it's also spelled with an "O", but it sounds different. In the russian alphabet, there is both an "O" and an "A". It even looks the same as in english, but the "O" in russian sounds more like an "A". End of discussion, next topic everyone!

  • девчонка симпатичная

  • thats how they pronouns it russia

  • ....who cares?

Seriously. Butthurt linguists can piss off. The kid is amazing, his skills are unparalleled, and honestly...if he gave a shit, he would have corrected people.

His entire career, people pronounced Patrick Roy's last name wrong, but he told the media to use the "Wah" that we know him by.

If Ovi cared, he'd let us know.

  • The reason Russians don't let us know how to correctly pronounce their names is because they believe we are ignorant North Americans incapable of getting the name right. So why bother.

His name is Avechkin. Get it right!

  • NO YOU GET IT RIGHT! He's my fav player and he calls HIMSELF Ovechkin. If you play or knew anything about hockey we, us people that play, pronounce it OVECHKIN! Get it right!

  • it just shows that americans disrespect to other countries names. How the fuck u think he calls himself ovechkin. I know that every russian calls him avechkin and its a big difference.

  • Hmmm...Russians roll their r's when they say "New York" or "California". . . is that disrespectful?

  • do they write it in a different way? Ha no but they missed spelled his name.

  • What do you mean mispelt his name? It is an O, o's are just sometimes pronounced like 'a' in russian.

  • No, its how to pronounce all the Rs in russian..

  • Its really not a big deal, i'm russian and pronouncing russin names for english speaking people is hard. Like Kozlov you really pronounce is as Kazlov. If anything make an argument about how Semins name is pronounced.,Its Siomen. Now other sashas name is always misspronounced but really its not a big deal.

  • Avechkin - this is like moscow people say it.

    nevermind

  • That Russian Bitch is ridiculous. She is telling us how to pronounce it IN RUSSIAN. In english, according to english rules, we are all pronouncing it correctly. Tell the russian bitch not to correct US on OUR ENGLISH.

  • Firstly, she a very nice kind woman, not a female dog. Secondly, it is absurd that Ovechkin is pronounce Ovechkin because the first letter of his name happens to look like an O. His name is pronounced Avechkin, and we should respect that.

Clearly if you had a point you would make it without ad hominem.

  • Ask someone who knows a thing or two about it. Ovechkin, as it is pronounced here, is the way that it is pronounced on english. Maybe in russia it wouldnt fly, but here it's proper. You pronounce things in english if you speak english. The pronunciation "Avechkin" or whatever is how you pronounce his name as it is spelled in russian, with russian letters that don;t even exist in english. Look it up, then get back to me. One thing to consider, why does Ovechkin never complain about it?

  • There's no such thing as pronouncing the names in English. The names should be pronounced as close to how they sound in the original language as possible, IMO. For example, when Hasek started playing in the NHL everyone said his name as it was written in English, but then we he became a star they corrected it to the proper Czech pronunciation of Ha-shek. Also, Boston Krejci is not pronounced as in English, but as in Czech Kray-chee.

  • hehe!!

    смешное видео

  • да!

  • when your in north america its pronounced ovechkin like you know and when your in russia you say it like what ever the fuck your blabbing about

  • lol haha

  • you're fakin' stupit vitun urpot hankikkaa elämä vittu mull on matikan koe maanantaina Perkele!! so shut the fug upp!! jee mull on nälkä snägärille tappelee heja

    I'm from sweden

  • shes hot

  • wow its russian pronounciation these guys are making to big of a deal about it

  • Also his teammate Alex Semin is actualy pronounced "Syomin", its "yo" not "e" as in semen..

  • same as coward is pronounced "caward".. that makes no sense either...

  • As a huge hockey fan, I wanted to point out almost all announcers just guess or go by what they've heard for pronounciation. Even "Sakic" is pronounced wrong it's actually closer to "Sak-eech"- I think, but I sure someone else will give another pronounciation.

  • im pretty sure its not sakeech cuz hes canadian not german.

  • hmm... well.. isn't the r sound of Aleksandr suppose to be rolled too like in portugese/spanish?

  • People, calm down; they are obviously being funny in the video--they aren't actually mad.

  • As much as I like to know the correct pronounciation of names, the condescending attitude was unnecessary. Besides, if it was really that much of an issue, I'm sure Mr. Ovechkin would have corrected us all by now.

  • i like these pronunciation videos! do more :):) i would love to hear the Russian pronounciation of my name, Tatiana. As I've probably been saying it wrong my whole life.

  • They complain that they get the sound of one letter slightly wrong.

They get the finnish names COMPLETELY wrong. not just one vowel. Pedantic twats.

  • When the Russian "O" isn't stressed it sounds like an "A". Take the Russian word for window for example, "окно" looks like it should be pronounced ohknoh but the stress is on the last O so it is pronounced ahknoh.

  • Yeah.. don't know why it's so difficult for some people to comprehend.

  • this is really rude... calm down

  • I think they asked us to pronounce their names the way we presently are... in Montreal we said Kovalief at first but it switched to Kovalev, same thing with Kostitsyn (Kastitsyn)

  • There are rules to Russian pronunciation. We are fully capable of pronouncing the names as they would in Russian. It is patently ridiculous for North Americans to have their own incorrect pronunciations.

  • i dont care... if they want to be called like they are in Russia, then they should say so... i mean its ur opinion, but its theirs names... My name is Simon, and I am a French Canadian, when I am with other frenchies, I want them to pronounce it the french way, but when I am with english ppl, I want them to pronounce it the english way. Think about it, its probably the same...

  • so what do you think about what I said?

  • Everything that I've ever seen and read about the Russian Cyrillic Alphabet is that:

"O" is pronounced like o in hello

"A" is pronounced "ah" like the "a" in car.

However, I did find reference to "O" being pronounced like the "al" portion of chalk...but even that varies between British or American pronunciations.

  • The "o" is pronounced like "a" when the "o" is in an unstressed syllable--as in the hockey player's name, овечкин. The stress is on the 2nd syllable: o-VECH-kin.

  • As bad as North Americans are in pronouncing foreign names wrong, they wouldn't be doing it if Ovechkin actually spells it in English it exactly the way it sounds in Russian. Secondly, if Ovechkin actually corrected it the first time it was pronounced wrong in English, that would have also helped.

  • It'S impossible for him to use Latin letters first to spell it right and it's even more impossible considering it will be read by english speakers.

It's not an A, it's not an O. It's near an english A, but it's more of an hard french a like you would hear in Quebec or a clear à in France. I can't even see of a Latin reference which is correct.

But, if you say Avetchkin, it will already be better than Ovechkin.

  • Alright then y don't we say KAVALEV instead of KOOOOvalev. U guys are dead wrong.

  • The O in Ovechkin comes from the fact that the Russian letter looks like an "O," but actually sounds like a soft English "a." No one in Russia would call him "O"vechkin. So why are we doing it?

  • that russian chick? DO WANT!!

  • It's not that bad the way people pronounce Ovechkin's name. Kovalchuk is totally wrong pronunciation. It's actually: kaval'chjuk.
