  • good idea.

  • why wont you include youe voice instead of music, music just lifting off the mind from you hand

  • don't u ever see a hot glue gun

  • Some CDROM cases are two inches too long. Measure and then hack saw the remainder off. The drive will fit and there will be plenty of room for air circulation and cables. File and tape over the edge of the freshly cut end to make it safe. Some cases do not have screws to hold the top and bottom together, use clear shipping tape to hold them securely. There are millions of inoperative CDROMS to be used. Read sidebar for more information. Best old parts utilization video on YouTube!

  • my godness too much work and too messy glue you fill in ! you are not thomas Edison Correct ? On the earth who has too much time to do this work ?

  • I want to use this as a back up drive, one that I can move around in my office. I was thinking maybe I could pull a power supply from an old pc and use it to power the drive.

  • @whiskeyify You can do it. Good idea.

  • I stayed for the harmonica :)

Wait a minute-tuh.. this harmonica appears to be narrative to the video !?

    Bravo bravo !

  • lamest music ever

  • dud this harmonica crap is really annoying

  • I agree I think for the price of that tube of caulk you could have bought a cheap pair of drive rails and it would have been a lot nicer.

  • You would be better off just using some cheap (metal) adapters to fit your 3 1/2 disks into a 5 1/4 slots.

That way the metal would conduct heat from your drive to your chassis and you would save a lot of work and it would be about as cheap as this solution. Also mounting several disks like this would not work well because of the fan.

This is however a neat way to make a external disk enclosure :)

  • que mierda es esto me dio mucha hueva

  • Seems like a lot of effort for something so botched and scruffy, I can't help wondering why not just install the HDD into one of the 3.5" bays?

Ever heard of drill bits and screws?

  • What is to drill and screw? Why waste your time drillin'? We live in the modern age of adhesives.

  • seems sillicon rubber is your sollution to everything =P

  • Easy way is to buy a full size case, that can house like 8 hard drives.

  • I did that only with duct tape.

  • or hotglue as thats fine

  • Well, It isn't the prettiest craftsmanship I've ever seen, but the idea is really really cool and ceative. Good job!! P.S. If you want to hear some amazing harmonica , look up adam gussow here on youtube, u can thank me later ;-)

  • sata hard drive in a pc even without cd or dvd drive?

  • Well if you lack space i guess..But since you mounted a fan which is very small..it will make more sound than before.

  • Thanks for your comment.

After I built several of these enclosures, I decided to eliminate the fan. If you are not mounting the CDROM hard drive case completely inside your computer case and only using the drive bays then you can eliminate the fan. Eliminate the fan in the CDROM case. Install a computer case fan (you might all ready have one) so the air is sucked out of the case. Tape the vent holes in the computer case to direct air so all air is sucked in from the front of the CDROM case.

  • Okay, I think i may use rubberbands to set my hardrives hanging inside the computer. That way i will reduce vibration and sound=)

  • i fell asleep in the middle of the video. that music made me mad sleepy.

  • it´s a new hard disk house, lol

  • you know, i think this is the first time ive seen an instructional video where the person doesnt talk and shows exactly what the person should do step by step, although the gluing was very boring it did show the viewer step by step what to do. i cant say that for the other millions of videos out there that suck. they either explain what something does but doesnt show it, and that sux. very well done,

  • Thank you for the compliment.

  • Why don't you simply use standard HDD mounting brackets for 5,25" bays? It would keep the HDD relatively cool and you wouldn't make such a mess with that silicone of yours. Plus they are extremely cheap.

  • Why? Broken CDROMs are everywhere and silicone is cheaper. Plus you have the benevit of protection and portability. Let the main fan suck the air through the drives, tape the holes in your case to direct the cool air. Paint the bezel for a great look! Use metallic deep cherry flake.

  • I think it's most for fun... would be a little wierd to see a PC without a harddrive, But with 2 CD/DVD's

  • lol most computers have only two CD bays and like three or four HDD bays, so i think it would be better just to put it there, unless your using a very old computer that only has two bays but has two CD bays(one unused of course)

  • its would be better to use the hard drive's mounting rails glued to the case.

  • well done

  • so what happens when you want to take the hard drive out of the cd rom cause its glued in there

  • Use the proper tool for the job?

You been on a camping or fishing trip? You carry a watch in one pocket and on your side is what?

You should know this stuff if you're from the land down under.

    Try #5

  • nice man

  • I would have drilled holes and screwed the parts in rather then using glue, but none the less this is quite a nice idea. Using a smaller fan would also allow for placing it inside the enclosure which would look better. You could also add multiple small fans to the front for intake and use the one on the top for outtake . ;)

  • You can not screw in the drive because the screw heads will interfere with the insertion of the unit into the PC case.

My method is simple and straight-forward.

  • Great idea. I have two old disk drives and two small 40GB hard drives. I have started the first one and it is setting at the moment. I will tell you how it finishes up thanks for this imaginitive idea!

  • lol, just glue that bitch in there huh?

  • very nice

  • Thank you, Gracias!

  • Ive got 3 Optical drive bays(2 are in use)I might get rid of one of these and turn it into a HDD bay instead.I have 2 HDDs with a big gap between each and they get up to 49'C at any given time.

  • "Does your hard drive have adequate space for ventilation?"

    NO

"Do you have a secondary drive stacked on top or bottom of the primary drive?"

    YES :S

"Is there space between the drives for ventilation?"

    NO

"Are you going to try this at home?"

    TOTALLY YES!!!!!

  • and a little question,

what is the spray for?? (at 0:42)

Thanks for the idea, you are giving many years of life to alot of disk. :)

  • It is a can of Scrubbing Bubbles. Scrubbing Bubbles is a household cleaner for general purpose cleaning of dirty objects.

  • DAP 100% silicone rubber sealant, clear.

  • is was good man....

  • nice video just looked to ugly for me but its a good idea i give 5 starts just for the idea

  • very creative on youtube

  • nice idea man..think ill try it.

  • yeah, nice little background harmonica there.

  • Thank You! It was the first and only take on the harmonica for the soundtrack. You know how to play a harmonica better than me. Your YouTube videos are good.

  • well thanks!

  • thats how ideas rr born dude love the vid keep it up

  • Thank You bleu1ray!

  • interesting vid

  • now i want a cdrom drive!

  • Simple and effective only the silicone is a bit untidy.

  • you know what else works? External hard drives...just saying. I do like what you did with the fan though.

  • nice harp is that you?

  • Yes, I play the soundtrack also. Thank You.

  • nifty.
