Your not going to automatically get paid better for being an illegal, this was in California where the cost of living is high that is why they pay so much per hour.You likely won't make that much in places where cost of living is cheaper and probably couldn't afford a nice place to live plus food in an expensive part of Cal.on $23 per hour.One apartment in Manhatten was over $700/ month for 78 sq. ft about the size of a full bathroom.
