@CuppleCake No, I was not paid anything for this video. There was no one on the boat that had video other than myself. As well, there were no other boats in the area at the time the video was taken. There might have been other videos of other instances, but not of this instance.
NTV never even contacted me or the owner of the boat about this sighting.
Since they remain in these stable family pods their entire life, they are believed to have a type of "culture" wherein they pass on information to their young. Adults can live to almost 100 (we have a few here in Washington believed to be in their 80s and 90s), so in only a few generations they have seen a lot of the development of human colonization and civilization. One wonders if they tell stories of us and whether that is why they don't hurt humans.
Holy cow! With all the boat movement, it is amazing you caught those images. Probably the most intelligent animal on the planet along with humans. Hard to see them killing another species of whale or any sea mammal, but their intelligence doesn't mean they developed any sort of empathy or compassion for other whales. It's fascinating that orcas have never attacked humans in the wild, or if so, maybe once or twice and that's it.
@scrubjay93 think of an Orca's mentality towards humans like that of a lion. Lions do not hunt human but if agitated or desperate, they will. I'm guessing if the orca's have a few, bad days and sees a human in the water -- there's be a nasty outcome. As for attacking other whales -- they've been doing this for years. The first time I've heard of it was an attack on porpoises. It doesn't help that we steal their food and maybe some just like to hunt a more difficult prey to take down
My mom lives in Newfie, and I took a boat tour to see whales and puffins when I visited her two years ago. Only saw a few Minke tails though, nothing like this. Incredible.
I forgot to mention Pygmy right whales. They're really the smallest of the baleen whales. However, because they're less abundant in our waters, I totally forgot about them... :)
@justin0993: A minke, actually, is the smallest of the baleen whales. Unlike dolphins and orcas (sperm whales, etc) who have teeth and chew things, baleen whales strain their food (humpbacks, blue whales, fins, minkes).

Wow. I just read an article about this last night. It's amazing. There's been some Belugas down around where I'm from for years, but I had no idea there were Orcas swimming in our waters. It's amazing to watch.
I was raised in NL , lived here all my life but this is the first time I have seen this. and yes I have been in a boat before, this is not some thing you see every day even if you live here. sharks, killer whales, giant squid, giant blue lobster, useless government officials, we see it all. you just dont see a feeding like this very often. just part of the reward for living here.
Admit it, for the good first half of this video, you were staring at the screen, moving with the camera and watching every time you saw a bit a whale, then finally the attacked happened for like 5-10 seconds and you're like..."Oh, cool".
Those orcas have to eat just like everybody else. Of course the "vegans" will get after them and try to persuade them to only eat seaweed... I wonder if killer whales like the taste of vegans?
That's why they call them "killer whales". They are experts at killing other whales!
They are even known to take out white sharks. Watch it here on YT.
Some of the largest great white sharks have been caught off the coast of Prince Edward Island, could have something to do with the blue tunas and seal populations? Google great white sharks Prince Edward Island. I saw a massive male at Cove Head over 20 yrs ago. Unbelievable!
i wouldnt call it glorifying so much as documenting, you've never watched a nature show? i don't know about you but i findi it highly interesting to see how animals have adapted to finding food over millions of years its either kill or be killed and this is just evidence of that nothing more nothing less, now if their was an ad prior to saying come watch this vicious killing filled with blood and guts then yeah i may be on your side but im gonna have to agree to disagree here
@leestringer Didn't realize it was sarcasm..and I'm a Newfie too. I'm just used to PETA stickin their nose in about the seal hunt. And also living in AB dosen't make my sense of humor about "newfie" jokes any easier. Sorry Lee!
Wow. It is something I never thought I'd see happening off our coast!! And twice in as many weeks! We were out a few weeks ago in Witless Bay and saw nothing. But the guide had told us a pod of orca's had been through & scattered the whales.
Pretty awesome to be caught on video like that. The Newfie accents are a nice touch, it's definitely much better than Oprah but and about on par with David Attenborough.
what the hell are they attacking?

"Probably the most intelligent animal on the planet along with humans"
Brain Weight as % of Body Weight
human 2.10
killer whale 0.09
Not "smart" like humans, just incredibly well evolved by nature as an apex predator.

I live in St. John's, and my father keeps bugging me to play this for him, I saw this just too many times.. It's still amazing though, more than less.
But did people know that when they played this on NTV news, The news station actually paid them like 20 bucks .. maybe more =P
