Some help please; everytime i go to try and extrude and bevel my text.....its either grayed out....or when i DO use it....the text becomes pasted onto a box object that gets 3D'd. PLEASE any help?

When you select the Pen Tool you need to go to the top menu and select "Path" instead of "Shape Layers".
