  • See how wonderful Youtube has helped us... but most of all, it is the great generosity of POHvids to upload it to share this video captured 70 years ago with all of us. Penang has changed in many ways, but it is also good to know that some of the structures like the Snake Temple and Kek Lok Si are actually more than 70 years old and are still standing there.

  • @Jackleong29 Happy to share. My great aunt (who died about 30 years ago) would be thrilled to know that her films have been viewed by thousands.

  • Asia and much of the world had more natural beauty in the past. Now it is overrun with industry and the same super corporate chains and over-population. I guess we traded off beauty for having conveniences.

  • WOW! Such An amazing VIDEO

  • Such a Gem to have this historical footage. Your Great Aunt must have been quite a character!

  • Hi I am a researcher on Penang early views and this video caught my mind. May I know the source of this video? Does anyone own this personally?

  • @darenraj Yes, my great aunt, Evelyn Reinhardt, took this footage in 1939. She died about 30 years ago, and I now have the original films. More info about Evelyn Reinhardt is in the "show more" section under the video.

  • @POHvids This is really great to hear. Where are you based now? If you are in Malaysia, I would love to see the original videos.

  • @darenraj I'm not in Malaysia, sorry. The original 16mm film is a higher resolution version of what's on YouTube. The film was deteriorating severely when we digitized it several years ago.

  • 5 countries attacked Malaya ... i know it because i am Malaysian here are the countries that attacked Malaya

    1.Portuguese attacked Malacca in Malaya

2.Turkey attacked Malacca after defeat Portuguese

3.British Malacca and 2 more place but i forgot the other 2 place they attacked

    4.Japanese Whole Malaya

5.Communist Bukit Kepong (Its A Place Name)

6.British again after they bomb Japanese

  • @xxsakamotoxx2 You forgot the Dutch, who wrestled Malacca from the Portuguese.

  • Thanks for uploading. It is really a piece of gem especially for the young Malaysians. I am so thankful to the person who did the recording or else,we would not be able to see this.

  • 4:20 = Kuala Lumpur.. :)

  • Sweet Victory for Japan...too bad the Malay animals rather be oppressed by a bunch of white monkeys than be liberated by their own kind.

  • @Microglia1

I think as we're all animals of one kind or another - the Malays must firstly be liberated from the yellow monkeys from China and lately their fellow brown monkeys.

I reckon Microglia1 must be a yellow or black or renegade Malay monkey. He should be grateful to the white monkeys for opening the doors of malaya and Singapore to his ilk.

By the way I am a Malay born in the lunar year of the Monkey.

  • wow my country cool never seen those things before :)

  • Thanks For Sharing

  • The Old Good Day!!

  • THe world was a really different place back then, everything and every place has a distinct personal feel to it.

it makes it kind of sad seeing how globalization has set a standardized version of the world. with everyone always behind some technology (internet/cellphone) no one seeks to experience things first hand nowdays, im happy you have managed to take a video of the times to remind the younger generation.

  • thx for posting this video

  • From the footage, Singapore is already a vibrant city with an exotic nighlife in the 30s. And, snake charmers did exist here !

This footage is a rare gem that depicted glimpses of Singapore we only knew from b/w photos.

  • Absolutely brilliant. A real gold mine. Thanks a million.
