Brussels aspires heading towards normal democracy (1 person = 1 vote) meaning that Germany, Britain and France would litterally decide for the smaller countries in a "perfectly fair democratic" way.
The way Brussels reacts to countries voting no in important referenda already indicates how undemocratic the EU in reality is.
The EU should remain what it does best: a great economic power block and military cooperation.
I would not want to see Europe ruled by Turkey or Russia. These countries have too large populations and Russia has problems with democracy. They like to use their resources to blackmail other nations. I don't think other EU states could trust them.

Turkeys population is smaller then Germanys and they are the most democratic muslim Nation on Earth, if they would join the EU maybe Nations like Iraq or Iran take an example on it and get more democratic, means not so much terroristic acts anymore.
If it comes to Germany you must notice that according to statistics German population will shrink to between 69 and 74 million by 2050. In 2007, the population of Turkey stood at 70.5 million with a growth rate of 1.04 % per annum. Also there is many Germans of Turkish origin already living in Germany. This is why I am not convinced about Turkey becoming part of the EU. I am for special relations with them like free trade arrangements etc.
One thing to note, population growth tends to decline with prosperity.
Assuming Turkey was to join the union, it would likely see a significant economic growth, thereby, increasing its quality of life. Within the next 10-15 years, per se, they would likely see a significant decrease in population growth. I do think they would maintain a significantly higher percentage of births per death than the average EU nation though. But it could be about even.

Yes I understand that religion shouldn't have an absolute majority however secularism is in my opinion another word for communism. Well De Gaulle was a firm secularist! He was himnself religious, but believed religion had no say in state affairs. Unlike in the USSR, you are allowed to worship in the EU, but the people in charge do not talk about God. Good, I say!

You can be a secularist and a socialist, or be right-wing and secular (like Sarkozy) or somewhere in the middle and secular (like Gordon Brown). I am for the separation of church and state, but I am an ordo-liberal, egalitarian imperialist - none of my views are taken from Karl Marx. So there really is no comparrisson between Communism (in any of its forms) and Secularism.
De Gaulle wasn't that firm of a secularist and got rid of the extreme forms of France's seperation of church and state and sought to bring a more nationlistic form of it and he clearly said he wanted Europe to embrace its Christian heritage.
It's one thing to accept a form of common heritage on Christian values, it's another entirely to make the the church part of the state aparatus or vice a versa. DeGaule didn't get rid of the laws requiring no religion is schools or public buildings. France still didn't have an official religion, under his presidency. He was a social conservative, but then you can be and still be secular. The French government is legally prohibited from recognizing any "religion", only "religious organisations."

Traditional religions? What does that mean? Personally I'm an Atheist, and I think people should have a right to believe, or not believe, as they see fit. So I'm very much in favour of the current EU deirection of greater secularism - that's the best way to have a trully free people; not enforceing religious laws on them.

Hey! No need for that... we can all be civilised about this. The EU may be made up of Christian nations (in the sense that the countries that make up the EU have majority Christian populations) but most of them are secular - church and state are separated. Also, if you look at the EU, many of the Christians have no link to the pope: the Netherlands is Protestant, as is Germany (mostly), and the Eastern members are mostly Orthodox, not Catholic. So religion, if anything, devides us!!

Yes I understand that religion shouldn't have an absolute majority however secularism is in my opinion another word for communism. If you want the EU to be another Soviet Union than I'm staying the hell out. I want people like De Gaulle, Adenauer, Strauss, Karamanlis, and De Gasperi ruling Europe again.

Well De Gaulle was a firm secularist! He was himnself religious, but believed religion had no say in state affairs. Communism is a whole ideology, and a tiny part of it is the idea that God is opressive and should be abandoned. Secularists don't want to ban God, far from it, we simply want church to have no ties to the state, and for no religion to be favoured over any others. Unlike in the USSR, you are allowed to worship in the EU, but the people in charge do not talk about God. Good, I say!

Also, unlike with communiusm, being secular in no way affects your opinion on government policy. You can be a secularist and a socialist, or be right-wing and secular (like Sarkozy) or somewhere in the middle and secular (like Gordon Brown). I am for the separation of church and state, but I am an ordo-liberal, egalitarian imperialist - none of my views are taken from Karl Marx. So there really is no comparrisson between Communism (in any of its forms) and Secularism.

De Gaulle wasn't that firm of a secularist and got rid of the extreme forms of France's seperation of church and state and sought to bring a more nationlistic form of it and he clearly said he wanted Europe to embrace its Christian heritage.

It's one thing to accept a form of common heritage on Christian values, it's another entirely to make the the church part of the state aparatus or vice a versa. DeGaule didn't get rid of the laws requiring no religion is schools or public buildings. France still didn't have an official religion, under his presidency. He was a social conservative, but then you can be and still be secular. The French government is legally prohibited from recognizing any "religion", only "religious organisations."

Yes but he was in favor of Europe embracing its Chrisitian heritage so he was in favor of some form of official religion and he did get rid of some extreme forms of the church/state seperation and he also wasn't conservative on all social issues at least to the extent of some Republicans you see in the U.S. But you still have to understand that if it weren't for religions like the RCC then Europe wouldn't of reunified peacefully. Instead would've ended in a nuclear war.

One needs to consider the time he was in and his back-ground. He was a millitary man, and the french military has a long monarchist, pro-official religion, heritage - it's natural that he simpathised with some of this. A 2004 IFOP survey tallied that 44% of the French people do not believe in God; contrast with 20% in 1947. Plus, 12.7% (8,065,000 people) belong to a religion other than Catholicism. This is a growing trend - separation of Church and State is the only way to keep Europe united.

Traditional religions? What does that mean? Personally I'm an Atheist, and I think people should have a right to believe, or not believe, as they see fit. So I'm very much in favour of the current EU deirection of greater secularism - that's the best way to have a trully free people; not enforceing religious laws on them.
