A pyro that airblasts ubers away, that protects sentries from projectiles and spies and that airblast spies away from backstabbing friendlies will not get top score or top kill, but you WILL be the MVP of your team. Using the phlogistinator or the backburner and going for kills might improve your score but make you useless (or at least not as useful) to your team.

Another advantage of the detonator is that when the Pyro jumps he momentarily burns himself. If you have another pyro standing behind you with the Manmelter you can help that pyro get crits before the match starts. :D

detonator gives you a 1 millimeter flare jump and a half inch blast radius. it sucks bad. i swear the flare jump doesnt give you any extra height and you can detonate it right next to someone and they wont ignite

The smaller one above that is how much damage your last successful attack did - not so useful when you're pyro or heavy, but very helpful to know when you're scout or soldier or something, knowing whether your last attack did 17 or 70 damage gives you an idea of whether you should chase the kill or not.

@Straif5 Oh that. That's HLStatsX, a server-side plugin for recording player statistics. It's not something you as a player can control, the server you play on either has it installed or it doesn't. Basically it records statistics and gives each player a score based on things like kills, kill assists, killstreaks, points capped, deaths etc. So if you play on the same server a lot you can get a high score.

The room with the sentry in it is reachable with det jumps but it's very difficult. I find I am most successful doing it when using the The Gas Jockey's Gear set for the speed increase. There is a small chunk of rock that sticks out just a little you got to jump from to reach it. But like I said it is difficult. Out of 10 tries for it I miss it 9 of them.

@Gundamdesigner How so? The det still crits on flaming targets the same as the flare gun. Take a look at the Wiki. The Det is an upgrade to the Flare gun in every way except that close range explosion.

MOVEMENT KEYS

For movement I have shifted mine to the left like this:

Strafe left: s

Strafe right: f

Move forward: e

Move backward: d

This leaves my pinkie free. Lately I've taken to using 'a' for crouch to make rocket jumping easier. Although I still suck at it, at least I'm holding the right keys.

What's your view on the general "pyro is the most underpowered and weakest class in TF2" argument? Personally I think his role is dynamic and flexible; he's amazing on defense (homewrecker, airblast), amazing on offense (flare, axe) and a great controller of space.

@NeptuneYT Pryo isn't underpowered a all. It's just far too easy to play, and it counters spies too hard (though the Spycicle helps address that). You can do way more damage by going W+M1 while screaming DEEEERP than you should be able to.

Star although you are right about the pyro not being a very tanky/kill oriented class you seem to forget that the pyro has 175 hp (4th highest in the game after heavy,solly,demo) and if you know how to be sneaky and you are smart roaming pyro can and will destroy everything, so its not just a class that you hang around the med and combo with..

When the Detonator was released it was, unarguably, useless garbage. In fact, while it's still useful I think it should be buffed even more. Specifically, I think it should have the blast radius and jumping ability of a rocket for the Pyro and also minicrit all burning enemies in a blast radius. If that's too much, make it fire slower or something.

@Tonyrockwalker First of all, this is the PC version, the only one that has updates I believe. And if your rocket jumps aren't that good, you need to make sure you're angling your rockets correctly and time the crouch-jump appropriately.

I like to use the Detonator with the Phlogistinator for the ambush possibilities it gives me. Harass from long range, 2-3 players on fire, Mini-Crits, get behind them and pop the crits!

It's an amazing addition to the Pyro's arsenal. I like it better than the Flare Gun to be honest.

Honstly I didnt liked the detonater since I am a stealh noob I dont like the noise it sort of does give away where you are.

If you treat the detonator like the sticky bomb launcher, you can get a lot more damage than the flare gun over time, just because you'll be able to hit people with it consistently and at any range. So the 90 damage crit of the flare gun instead of 40 of the detonator suddenly won't seem so bad!

It does take some practice to get the timing right, but it is an amazing weapon once you realize how much damage you can do just with the after burn if you actually hit people!
