  • For the survival of intelligence, reason and curiosity. Let's work together.

  • Spread intelligence and never let it go, we need it to save this world and ourselves.

  • Well it's not just Carl Sagan who was the man, his team also needed credited to film and put this together as well!

  • Even though I was only 2 when he died, I can easily realize how legendary of a human being this was just by seeing this. Why aren't there more shows like this on tv?

  • @TheHolydunk i wish there were. the most similar TV show i've seen is Music of Man by Yehudi Menuhin. he was a very curious and kind man like Carl. i can't seem to find the entire series online though.

  • Billions and billions: Carl was definitely one out of all that.

  • its really just reminds me of witch came first the chicken or the egg in wich i reply a circle has no start nor end. However it will always rattle my brain as to where any matter came from. The question perhaps impossible to answer.

  • simply stunning thanks for the chance to watch this again

  • Carl Sagans narration is impeccable.

  • Sagan is the human Silver Surfer.

  • suspeneded in a sunbeam.

  • "The awesome machinery of nature" is a pretty fantastic phrase.

  • Belief is not logically based, if it is lead by faith.

  • There's nothing wrong in believing in something. Believing in something blindy however is very dangerous

  • Truth.

  • Niel Degrasse Tyson=Carl Sagan of our time

  • Absolute Icon, Carl Sagan is.

  • Agreed tech....

  • What douche dislikes this?

  • This should be required viewing for every child.

  • @tekfunk

Completely agree. Also, every adult should watch it again even if they've seen it before.

  • @tekfunk Of all children, from 2 to 92.

  • @cabbievonbump i agree. i am gonna continue watching this series throughout my life. carl is very inspiring. i deeply admire his respect and wonder for everyone and everything.

  • @tekfunk or every redneck fundamentalist christian from the bible belt.

  • Legend...

  • The wise have a way of making everything they say sound important...and it is.

  • I know it's heresy to some, and my chronology is backwards, but .. it reminds me of, and makes me long for, the chirpy northern tones of Professor Cox.

  • He was a modern shaman

  • No matter how many times I watch this, even 30+ years later, it still "gets me." The sheer power of the words, combined with the images, is almost overwhelming...

  • @ahoog69 Could not agree more. Had a profound impact on myself as a teen and again as a middle-aged man, adding kindling again to a sense of wonder

  • Hahahahahahaha @Ramohog

Can someone get this guy a reality check?

  • @Ramohog 10/10 troll comment.

I await the 50 angry replies you're bound to get.

  • @Ramohog the gullible masses already are unable to discern what is good for them and good for the environment they live in. No matter what garbage you want to mention there is not a single proof that God exists, certainly not tuning of anthropic constants. Listening to Sagan talk about the reality that we live in is not wrong, what's wrong is following a church figure blindly into the dark while he's emptying your pockets and abusing your kids, in the name of something that does not exist.

  • @Nebbyke God can be proven, through His revelations and manifestations backed up by prophecy, proven accurate through documented history. Another way is through the sequential information, genetic algorithmic coding and decoding, structure and design of the nanotech minicomputers that we call cells, which is a clear sign of prior conscious activity according to the cause and effects structure, same way with the anthropic constants on the macrocosm. Sagan makes assumption errors and was deceiced!

  • Todays final voyage of the Atlantis marks a giant leep for politians and one giant leap backwards for mankind

  • Did dr Carl sagan know about the higgs particle.... and did he mention it in cosmos?

  • Carl Sagan = God

  • R.I.P one of the most brilliant men of our time!

  • I am glad Carl Sagan has passed. We no longer have a real space program if one even at all >.<.

  • im hetero but love carl.

  • Smoke weed errday.

  • "Recently we have waded a little way out, maybe ankel deep, and the water seems inviting" CArl Sagan is awesome

  • 240p is high quality for 1980!

  • I BELIEVE POWERFULLY ON HOW WELL WE UNDERSTAND THE COSMOS, IN WICH WE FLOAT LIKE MOAT OF DUST IN THE MORING SKYES - CARL SAGAN R.I.P. (1937-1996)

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the music from the series! I can't begin to convey how much I loved this series when it originally aired on PBS. Brings back memories of my childhood. Thank you!

  • watching Carl Sagan > food

  • wow... i only just discovered carl sagan this past week... and... this NEARLY put a tear to my eye because he is such a great inspiration in my life NOW, he has indeed.. changed my life

  • carl is the closest thing to an angel that will ever exist

  • @loosekarrott wow you're an idiot.

  • @Samaflame tell me more.

  • Required viewing for all beings.

  • @drutter I second this notion.

  • "Come with me" Such an ingaging statement.

  • "The universe is all there was, is and will be". A great man and a scientific genius making a very strange philosophical statement completely out of his field. Why did he go there at the beginning of this kind of video?

  • @agnostaxian

He goes "there" all the time. You should watch the whole series, it's incredible.

As for the quote, he actually said "Cosmos", not "universe". And that's the definition of Cosmos - all of space, all of time.

  • @drutter yes but isn't philosophy out of his field? i mean why does he say that? i am a theist and think there is a creator but his statement would go against what i think (and most of humanity for that matter and even many scientists).

I have watched the whole thing and it is a great presentation of the modern scientific journey with great history. Sagan was a great man, no doubt

  • @agnostaxian

Cosmos was a great read. The TV show was taken word for word from the book, but of course only contains a portion of it. I don't really think philosophy was out of his field. I'm not sure he ever studied it directly, but he could have probably taught high level courses on it with ease. I think Sagan was scientific to the core, but didn't limit himself, and knew a lot about philosophy and other disciplines.

It's good to hear that you watched the whole show, right on.

  • @drutter yes, i remember as a kid reading his books and looking at the pictures in there. one was of a meteor hitting the ocean and a series of pics showing the earth's future when the sun transforms- it was interesting stuff

  • Sagan. He is a fucking poet.

  • Carl sagan totally looks like my dad.

  • If you are a religious fruit loop who comes here to argue your lies, please go elsewhere and leave Mr. Sagan to the rational human beings of the world.

  • cosmos would be my desert island tv, if i could only pick one.

  • carl sagan understood our responsibility as humans to maintain our planet, thats why i like him so much, he really understands self responsibility, which is something quite lacking in modern culture.

  • i love all his assumptive language if anyone here is a christian and you wanna learn how to counter everything sagan says watch focus on the family THE TRUTH PROJECT it helps

  • @moonwalker794 get the fuck out of here.quit trying to make the human race dumber than it already is.

  • @MetallicADudE94 While I'll admit, God shouldn't be the automatic answer to everything, I find you an idiot for writing off his (moonwalker794) belief as retarded as you seem to be doing. I don't want to say that God is the reason that everything (scientific laws) exist, but do you honestly believe that "something" can come from "nothing"? No! I don't find God as that something that creating it out of nothing a pure fact or theory! I'm just saying that you, as egotistical as you seem....

  • @metalmonkey88 good point, i view god as a WHY answer rather than a How answer, we will never know why, but we can better understand how it all happened ...either way, discovery doesn't undermine the possible existence of a greater being. it just shows that the bible could be incorrect, which i have no problem with understanding, because it was written by men in a time that was somewhat primitive(in science that is) and translated through many languages over thousands of years.

  • @MetallicADudE94 cannot seriously think you KNOW any more than Christians what events led to our existence! Sure, there are some idiot Christians out there, but I think it's equally as stupid, and retarded to think that humankind knows enough to write off the existence of a being of the highest power. Sure, don't hold as fact that God created everything... but don't fucking act like you are smarter because evidence points to the contrary. You are equally as ignorant until you prove it as fact

  • @metalmonkey88 "You are equally as ignorant until you prove it as fact"

prove that "god" doesn't exist? you realise it's impossible to prove that kind of negative, right?

when it comes to fantastic claims we require fantastic evidence. the burden of proof is on the person making the claim, not the other way around eg if i claimed i could see exactly what the future held, you wouldn't believe me until i proved it, but there's absolutely no way that you could disprove it.

  • @Rabsputin Yes, I think that's right.. hence why people are innocent until proven guilty.

  • @Karestase exactly, unless it's trial by jury/media in which case the prosecution just has to convince gullible members of the public of the defendant's guilt.

trial by jury has always been a stupid idea. judges are at least qualified to make objective decisions on guilt, whereas the general public (a large percentage of whom believe in nonsense like jesus) base their decisions on their emotional reactions and "gut" feelings, and that's no good when you're deciding the fate of a real person.

  • @Rabsputin Yeah I agree a judge would be better to make an objective decision in relation to the law. But I do like the way a jury gives the public a say in what goes on. But you can't have things both ways I guess.

  • @Karestase i don't think the public should have a say personally, this is akin to mob rule.

  • @Rabsputin Yeah, I see where you're coming from.

  • @Karestase it's not a popular position i'm sure you'll agree but recently i decided i'd like to see a world where people have to pass an "ARE YOU COMPLETELY INSANE?!" examination before they're allowed to vote, but given that this would upset the crooked politicians who like pandering to fools to collect votes, it's never likely to happen. having the mental capacity to think critically is not the kind of voter these pigs want.

  • @Rabsputin Again I see the logic behind what you're saying. But, without seeming candid, may I remind you that we are getting off topic for the content of the video. So I shall end my input here. However, it was nice talking to you.

  • @Karestase yeah, my apologies. one thing always leads to another, i really should try to curb that!

  • @Rabsputin lol thanks again..

  • @MetallicADudE94 you know what i looked at ur channel and from what i can tell ur just some stupid dope smoker so shut up and look up facts about evolution and "starstuff" that EVERYONE thinks we are made of and youd see what crap theyre telling. And my shout out was to christians not a jackass like you, and yes christians are allowed to call jerks like you jackasses :P

  • @moonwalker794 you believe in fairytales. that says it all really. tell the easter bunny i said hi.

  • "We now return to Carl Sagan's Cosmos, edited for rednecks"

"I'm Carl Sagan. Just how old is our universe? Scientists believe that it's 4-"

"Hundreds and hundreds of years old"

"Scientists have determined that the universe was created by a-"

    "Goooooooood"

"ig bang. If we study the bones of a-"

    "Jesus!"

"osaurus Rex, it's clear by the use of carbon dating that-"

"Mountain Dew is the best soda ever made!"

  • I dont know why, but when Carl Sagan says something, I understand it. Doesn't matter how difficult it is but I still do. If all my professors in University were like him, I would have learned every single thing.

  • @xtm800 That is the mark of genius. Not only the ability to understand, but the ability to make others understand.

He did the same for me.

  • Comment removed

  • @xtm800

    i totally agree

  • @xtm800 This is exactly how I feel about Michio Kaku!!!! The man speaks simple science that is easy to picture!

  • @xtm800 Yes but without the work hours, how can you expect them to make a good living...

  • @xtm800 it's cause he's got melodic background music and snazzy vids playing. That's way overbudget for all your profs.

  • only 2200 views?!?!?!?! Unbelievable.....no wonder our species is doomed. If Katy Perry can get millions of views and awe inspiring videos like these can get such a minimal turnout....there is little hope. RIP Carl, I miss you so much. This series should be required for every child to see.

  • That's some dirty ass water ahahaha

  • RIP Carl Sagan.

I remember watching this as a kid, but I forget which year this was made...

  • Dont agree with sagans"God" vierw" but LOVE his work! Glory be to God

  • @infinitemika ignorance is bliss

  • @infinitemika Yes you do, in fact that is an argument known as Pascal's wager which is no longer used by people who understand it because of its obvious flaws. If you dedicated yourself to following a mythology did you really not lose anything? Furthermore the only way the argument would be remotely effective is if the person you are speaking to themselves believed in your god, which they don't, thus and consequences from the latter do not hold up. P.S Evolution is not a religion. -word limit :(

  • @infinitemika Carl Sagan > God

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux i dont think he think that statement is accurate.

  • @Seamonky72 no it is the cosmos prove it

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux

god=everything in the universe within and of itself working together to create what was, what is, and what will be.

    in my opinion

  • @mensendike that's why it's your opinion. :p

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux but don't you believe that god doesn't exist? how can you compare one man to something that does not exist, thats absurd.

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux Carl Sagan > Old Spice Guy > Chuck Norris > God > Nothing

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux FUCK YES.

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux I was going to ask you which God, but I'll just answer my own question, ALL OF THEM!

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux There is no god. Only Sagan.

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux Nope you're still wrong because Carl Sagan IS God.

  • @TheDeLoreanFlux God is the universe (not a sky fairy) no need to pray to the law of gravity-Carl Sagan understood this

  • So glad this is here.
