  • I honestly have to say, I heard this dirty, but You could see the way Scott was moving, it looked mostly clean, he hit him with his Bicep

  • I wish Paul would have came back to get his 1000th point. He was so close, story of his career.

  • this is when hockey had its last true hockey moment, in my mind. these days, stevens wouldve been suspended, kariya wouldve been out for months and not able to play through it and score this goal.

  • paul kariya is a beast.

  • Poor Paul. To add salt to injury Niedermayer would later won a cup with team Paul gave half of his career to.

  • @BENNYSIEGEL90 Sadly it was Kariya's choice to leave, which may have been the worst decision of his career. He was building a HOF career in Anaheim and the fans loved him. After he left, his name and career didn't stand out like it used to. To Anaheim fans, he's like an ex: we all remember how great it was with him as our captain, but once he left we felt betrayed and didn't want him back. we've moved on. It'll be interesting to see if he makes it into the HOF one day.

  • Best part was when he came back and just ripped it past marty. I'm a wings fan and I get crazy chills when I see that

  • paul kariya had 989 points in 989 games. Thats a point per game player i think he would have had well over 1000 if it werent gary suter cross check to the head in 1998. Kariya was so dominant that he put up 108 points in the 1995-96 season (his sophomore year). The next highest point total on the team was steve rucchin with 44 points.

  • IF THERES SOMEONE READING THIS THAT COULD SELL ME ONE OF THOSE DUCKS JERSEYS PLEASE LEMME KNOW.

  • That panning shot to Stevens to show his disbelief was amazing. Paul Kariya is amazing and his career was much too short.

  • Wow - the inability for anyone to get it - Stevens makes the blow, Kariya gets up and scores later. That's hockey - but by all means, you slobbering tools keep arguing over something else, you should be very proud. Too bad you can't play one day.

  • @lyronpa that was hockey before they didn't understand how symptoms of concussion do and situations like here should be handled. feel really sorry for kariya. not saying that they can do much about these nowadays either..

  • @lownrgy Oh, I totally agree. In retrospect as impressive as it was for him to return, it probably wasn't the right thing to do. My comment was directed toward all the incoherent ramblings of people making unjustified criticisms just to make themselves feel cool.

  • How can anyone possibly be hating on Crosby for being responsible with his rehab? Jesus christ. Calling someone a pussy because they want to fully recover from what could be a serious injury (especially if he came back too soon, and got hit again). This guy is one of the best players on the world, making a shitload of money. Wouldn't you want to protect that? hes only 24 ffs, he has years and years of great hockey ahead of him, why would he risk losing that??

  • @adfp13

dude the end has begun for crosby he just doesnt know it. the little fag has brain damage.

  • Stevens was one of the dirtiest players of all time.

  • @stormcrow7878 no hew as not he just made big hits some where dirty but a few dirty hits compaired to allot of clean but monstrous hits does not make him a dirty player

  • That was a late hit.... Fuck Stevens

  • @Charbo1 oh big woop a lte hit is not a big deal and the it was not even late a player has time to finish a hit they other guy does not need full control of the puck for you to hit him

  • Its the most perfect hit in NHL history.

Credit to Kariya for showing great leadership and passion. Glad we won the cup though.

  • "I was hoping he got up". Yeah, that's why you acted like it didn't happen after you hit him.

  • i love guys like this i don't give a shit if its clean or dirtyhits it makes the game more interesting this is allot better than pussy euro hockey where a tap to the head is considered dirty

  • @hanmerboys lol you realize more than 75% of nhl players are european right?

  • @slovak4life1991

That is completely wrong, did you just come up with a number in your head?

Not that it matters what part of the world most NHL players come from, but for the record most are Canadian.

  • @slovak4life1991 you do know that complete bullshit and that most NHL players come from Canada

  • there is no way they would let karya come back in the game today. they would have ran him thru a million tests....i think there are so many "more" concussions now because they actually diagnose them, before they just played dizzy. not a bad thing just an observation

  • Scott stevens was a fucking tool, always searching for an opportunity to hurt someone by a filthy hit

  • @PankisDaMan really???

you clearly have no knoledge of hockey then becouse back then (when hockey was still at its best) hits liek this where clean now stop being a troll saying EVERY hit is dirty jesus its so obvious your form Sweden you are all a bunch of pussys with an exeption to Sundin jesus go watch your bitch euro hockey or something

  • @hanmerboys Well first of all I loved when you could still hit someone in hockey just at this time, but what I'm saying is that Scott stevens often tried to find the hit where the other player was looking another way so he could go in and then fuck the guy up and maybe get the head aswell so he could inflict a little concussion. You can see this pattern on a number of hits, then again he was a master at finding clean good hits aswell.

  • @PankisDaMan so what you should know where you are at all times whenever i see someoen head deown i go for the hit to wake em up if they get a concution its there fault they should have kept there head up

  • @hanmerboys yeah, cause the person making the hit has no responsibility what so ever? You ignorant fuck

  • @PankisDaMan not as much as the perssone geting hit ou can do allot to avoid concutions

  • Nice hit. I can see both sides of the earlier argument. Crosby is playing it safe, on the grounds that he's one of the best in the game and a concussion is very serious despite the severity. The longer he waits the better off he is, though the pens are doing well without him. But Kariya got right back in it, ballsy but not smart. Who says stevens doesn't hit him again and he's forced to retire because he sustains brain damage? Just saying. He's got balls that clank, but that ain't too smart.

  • Gonna miss Kariya

  • Off the floor to on the board!

  • Stevens was known for his hard and sometimes cheap hits.

  • @astranine stevens hits were NEVER cheap, he was the last clean hitter the nhl has seen and might ever see. as i said to the other guy recently all of his hits were reviewed by the nhl to see if they would be legal hits today, ALL of them were deemed to be clean with the exception being this hit, which was not called dirty but the only one they MIGHT have had to look at, meaning have a meeting with scott. buying into the garbage that the NY media spews robs you of appreciating a great hitter.

  • I am a die hard devils fan, and i have to admit the Kariya has mad balls. Coming back from a hit like that is crazy, and in today's NHL he would not have been aloud to come back. Even though I was cheering for the devils, I was happy to see him back, and score a well deserved goal. Didn't matter though because the devils ended up winning the cup. And Stevens is probably the best hitter ever.

  • You just experienced a Rob Blake body check....

  • Damn, Stevens and Brodeur look like brothers... They look so similiar :D

  • Scott Stevens. Coward

  • K.O

  • this video gives me chills every single time i watch it. what a badass

  • one of the dirtiest hits of all time, Stevens was a cheapshot atrist, this hit was so dirty, its not funny late hit from the blindspot, Stevens was a dirty player

  • best ducks goal ever. yeah baby i was at that game.

  • Yea Paul Kariya gets a concussion and comes back in the same game.. Cindy crosby gets one and dissapears for half a year.

  • @gonotredame40 its the smart thing to do. Or else you could have problems for the rest of your life

  • @max432156 I was comparing guts.. btw ive had 4 concussions, crosby has 1 and hes afraid to come back.. Kariya>Crosby

  • @gonotredame40 LOL i doubt your concussions were as bad as the one Crosby got. Btw i don't care if you think Karyia is better i'm just saying that it's dangerous to rush back into contact hockey when you're not 100 %. Crosby is in the prime of his career so there's no point in ending his career early.

  • @max432156 Your right mine werent as bad.. they were worse and your completely right on the rushing back part but once again kariya had some giant balls to come back and thats very respectable. Crosby has a rep of being a bitch and he lives up to it for sure.

  • @gonotredame40 Holy shit, unless you fell off a cliff, you're concussions we're less severe than Crosby's one. He's playing in the nhl, where he runs into players who are 6''2 + numerous times. Yes Kariya had some balls to come back and i give him prop , but that doesn't mean Crosby is a bitch for waiting. He's being smart about it to avoid another early concussion. But you're an internet tough guy so what do i now LOL

  • @max432156 LOL at you for saying i fell of a cliff.. i actually fell off a side of a mountain skiing for one of my concussions. and im not saying im tough douchebag, im saying instead of feeling 95% and sitting out he should just man up and go in. im honestly sick and fucking tired of all you crosby dick riders saying "oh he skated today" bullshit. People in other countrys get bullets through the head, survive and return before crosby does.

  • @gonotredame40 Your definately mentally challeneged from those concussions then so that proves the point on how dangerous concussion injuries can be. Im not a crosby fan but in todays NHL you have to sit out till a doctor clears you. Its not Crosby being a "wuss" as you would say. Other people in the league are having to sit out also from concussions. There are major re-perscussions later in life from concussion injuries. So grow up kid and gain some intelligence.

  • @Pliableone Kid? first of all dumbass, i can tell your like 16 because you dont seem to get my point. Savard who is sitting out this year as a precaution had like 3 last year.. crosby had 1.. do you need me to repeat that fucktard? one concussion heals in about a month and then as you you get more the waiting time gets longer. you have no idea what your talking about and you probably have never played a single contact sport in your life.

  • @gonotredame40 awww your such an internet tough guy, its so cute. One day you'll be a real boy, untill then i hope your maturity level rises before someone smacks you back down to earth the hard way. Finish middle school little kid. You have no intelligence whatsoever.

  • this is proof that kariya has bigger balls than stevens

  • this is proof that kariya has bigger balls than stevens

  • Oh man, what a game that was.

I was fortunate enough to be there for all 3 ducks home games in 2003, and I'd have to say that it still stands as the greatest sporting event I've ever witnessed.

Between Brodeur's dumbass goal on himself in game three (maaaarty....maaaarty) and when kariya scored after this hit, I don't think I've ever heard the pond so loud, including after the game 5 victory in 2007.

A dirty hit...maybe, but it ain't like that's a new thing in hockey anyway.

  • @jesusmcsanders hey man Brodeur pried the cup for your team's webbed duck fingers, that stuff happens once in awhile, Roy's blunder was worse, he tried to raise his glove and he dropped the puck, Giguere is now a backup

  • @TJWhitey38 Of course that sort of thing happens sometimes. And of course it ultimately didn't matter because the Devils won the series anyway. Brodeur is a undoubtedly a future hall-of-famer, and Giguere looks more and more like a flash in the pan as time goes on.

That series was amazing and I recall it fondly despite its ultimate outcome, that's what I was saying.

  • Stevens another dirty Hit He could only pick his spots cause he was a Cheap HUNK OF SHIT Kariya was no were near the puck?

  • Kariya deserved the cup, not Scott "the flaming onion" Stevens

  • Кария рулил,рулит и рулил бы,если б такие козлы,как Стивенс не травмировали бы

  • Fucking Stevens!!!

    Paul-Greatest player!!!!

  • The dirty hit in the NHL is called way too much. Everything on the ice happens so quickly. A player lines up to hit another player and then at the last milli-second the guy he's going to hit turns the wrong way and then it looks dirty. Scott Stevens as always been a very physical player, but a bounty hunter he was not.

  • need to point out it was a clean hit....according to anouncers that sit around a circle jerk scott stevens has never thrown an illegal hit.

  • Кариа молодец...

  • Ahaha what the hell, Warmen ft. Alexi Laiho at the end?! Now that is the last thing I thought I'd hear:P

  • Thumbs up if you watched this after Kariya Retired :(

  • Nothing against Scott Stevens because he was a hell of a player and his physicality was another aspect that made him great but it sucks that this was the beginning of the end for Kariya. Maybe not so noticeably in his play but the brain damage that caused his retirement started here.

  • @vogez7 It seems to me like it started in '97 or '98, when he couldn't play in Nagano. He was a great player, but the man simply couldn't defend himself properly.

Unfortunate. As a longtime Ducks fan, I was bummed hearing the news of his retirement. Here's hoping that he doesn't develop any severe long-term impairments.

  • This and Moore's hit on Naslund would have resulted in suspensions in today's NHL. Might've saved Moore's career and won the Ducks a cup. Oh well...

  • how did stenens do an interview without blinking 6598757 times per second?

  • Bad attendance in today's Honda Center... different story eight years ago

  • Great player kariya is, was! I wish he was able to play this coming season but he retired.

  • man.... this guy was my favorite player. i remember watching this happen. he had a great career. i got chills man. lol thats insane!

  • effin chills everytime i watch him score after that monster hit...

  • a dirty hit in today's NHL.

  • the commentators call was probably one of the best ive heard "off the floor, on the board, paul kariya!"

  • i love you captain 4ever. what a wrecking ball.

  • "Off the floor, on the board.." Not even a Ducks fan, and that call puts chills through my body. Definitely one of the best ever if you ask me.

  • pretty much identical as Romes hit on Horton. Kariya wasnt looking... Horton wasnt look. Both hits were equally as late. Difference is Kariya isnt a pansy ass bitch and gets back up and scores a goal later in the game. Horton is a pansy ass bitch who went home and cried to mummy.

People say Kariya got off the ice on his own steam.... yeah cause the guy was strong and a hard ass (aka a real hockey player).

  • dirtiest hit ever!!!!

  • @villanova85 Are you joking me??? Look up dirtiest nhl hits ever... This won't even be up there

  • @villanova85 Are you joking??? Type in- This guy just gets DESTOYED

    Now that a DIRTY HIT

  • The world is being pussified, and its leaked to the NHL. Kariya gets destroyed and comes back to score a goal. Now you can't tap somebody without them going to see a doctor and getting a 4 game suspension. Rome's suspension is absolutely ridiculous. It was a bit late but that's all. This was just to shut up the Boston fans. The rules keep having to be accomodated for all the pussies who out there who piss and moan over the violence in the game. I'm sure the game was fine 50 years ago

  • This is what Hockey is about, you get hit and get back up. Fuckin' horton be a pussy, rome didnt even mean to do it intentionally. Even rome was hit in the head and got a concussion.

  • @heyitsrs horton a pussy? I agree that there was no intent to injure but the dude got knocked out and had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher. This situation was different Kariya got off the ice under his own power and he probably didn't suffer a concussion as thought. NHL equipment is built differently now and contains extremely hard plastic in the shoulder pads. Keep big hits and physicality in the game. But we don't want our players paralyzed and sitting around like squash

  • @Nooker Horton had to be carried off in a stretcher because of different medical policies and procedures in the present NHL as well.. you can watch the video and he tried to get up, but the trainer's wouldn't let him. definitely not a pussy..

  • He didn't even have the puck did you watch the replay at all? He passes it on his back hand a second before he gets hit. Not to mention I remember watching this game and remember thinking Kariya's career was over. I giv e him a ton of credite for even coming back let alone scoring a goal

  • A moment like this could not happen in today's NHL. Scott Stevens would've been thrown out, and Paul Kariya would likely not have been allowed back on the ice. I loved this goal.

Also, while I may not miss the "Mighty Ducks" name, I do miss that logo on the front. I remember reading that during the 90s it was one of the most recognizable in all of sports . If I'm a businessman, isn't that what I want? Brand recognition? They went from a face to a foot. How is that an improvement?

  • goddamn the music at the end is loud

  • @liquidgrey I second that. Lower that shittt

  • Stevens wouldn't be praised in todays game...it's gotten incredibly soft. The league sure is picky about who they dish out the discipline on though.

  • Why'd it show Kariya getting laced then cuts to an Anahiem bench that appears to be celebrating? That's not right...

  • Comment removed

  • Horton-Rome?

  • @alexisonfirexo not even close

  • @alexisonfirexo identical

  • I'm all for cleaning up dirty hits, but these days the NHL is going too far. Almost EVERY hit seems like there's someone bitching about it and the NHL has to look at it.

Aaron Rome just hit Horton with a similar hit to this and he got thrown out of the game. At the rate everyone is calling so many hits 'dirty', Scott Stevens probably wouldn't see the ice much in his career since so many of his hits today would be 'dirty'.

Just take out hits from behind and knee on knee, but keep hits like these

  • @JDubs878 too bad Rome's hit was a LATE hit

  • @littleenglish no later than this one lol

  • @littleenglish Lol watch this video, Kariya never even had the puck. Horton did. Sucks what happened though. Hope Horton fully recovers soon.

  • so many goosebumps right now

  • Paul when to my elementary school

  • Scott Stevens is a bitch

  • Paul Kariya is my second uncle. No lie. I would feel honoured to get the fuck knocked outta me by Scott Stevens

  • too bad Big E didn't get up after being hit like that.

  • what would he have done to crosby, oveckin, or malkin?

  • Scott Stevens is a piece of shit.

  • Wow that was a cheap shot! Oh well stevens was always known for being a coward!

  • the check was clean. All Stevens haters a girls

  • dirty hit in todays nhl... different story eight years ago

  • @prontoshadylane it was dirty then. that hit was way too late.

  • @prontoshadylane How? There was no elbow, it was barely late, and it wasn't a blindside hit. Kariya admired his pass and got laid out, the only possible complaint was that it was a tad late.

  • @prontoshadylane yeah and thats a shame, nothing is better than catchin a fool with his head down open ice

  • @prontoshadylane brendan shanahan recently reviewed ALL of stevens big hits and commented that this would be the ONLY one that would have to have been reviewed by the league if it happened today. the issue with this hit is not the point of contact rather the timing of the hit. was it a half second too late? that is very debatable as stated by shanny. even in todays nhl scott would not have been suspended. late hits are not something the "new nhl" came up with, legal then legal now.

  • Awesome hit, better goal

  • i live ri inbetween anihiem n la. paul k was the shit growing up. go ducks

  • Kariya could have been a legend with the ducks, but he will be forever marked as a Traitor.......

  • This is one the best moments in Stanley Cup history.

  • @helperturf I will give Stevens credit for dropping em a couple times with Probert. Wisely he stayed close to Proby and avoided any real damage, but good courage to even enter the fray. Drilling the stars back then came with a steeper price!

  • Man look at those chirpin birds at 0:23 lol

  • hahah look at the colors of the sticks. The Easton Synergy of the early 2000's.

  • @helperturf appreciate the "sorry"....I hear ya about the BS...a lotta YT tuff guys out there! We'll have to agree to disagree about this particular hit. Stevens is a guy you love or hate....and being a Wings fan and having him and the NJ defense stymie us in 95 for the cup....well....you probably know where I stand! I begrudgingly respect him...but the fan in me can't bring myself to like him.

  • @helperturf I guess it wasn't a hit to the head or from the blind side either??? No penalty was called...so ur correct on the legality. Legal and clean aren't the same, are they??? Relax on calling me a dumb ass for having an opinion on a questionable hit.

  • "I was definitely happy when he came back" Yea we could totally tell by that look on your face your were ecstatic.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank God for the 2005 rule changes...late hits like that should've never been tolerated. Finally the game is more open for skill and talent to be displayed...

  • off the floor! on the board!

  • I love the benches response, "How late are you allowed to hit?" knowing full well the puck was already dumped when Stevens hit him.

  • @iConnor86 You are an idiot if you think Scott Stevens couldnt play. Hall of fame defenseman, almost scored 1000 points in his career, which lasted for 22 full seasons, and 1635 games. He was a career +393, and had 13 all star game appearances. He always finished his checks, didnt make errors, and was one of the grittiest and most durable d-men to ever play the game. Oh, did I mention he also appeared in over 200 playoff games? Well he did, notching 118 points through those.

  • @Jimpoint5 bang on. won the conn smyth for a reason, albeit not this year. more to the point, 3 elbowing majors in 20 years of nhl hockey speaks to how clean his hits were

  • BEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME

  • i loved the mighty ducks and paul kariya is one of my favorite players ever but im not gonna say a bad thing about stevens for this hit. he's doing what he does best and that's how hockey is. it's a tough game. kariya is a fucking champ for coming back and scott stevens is not a dirty player. one of the nicest people ive ever met

  • God, that sound of that hit. Crunching...

Was that Anaheim reaction shot to the hit what their actual reaction was? It was a clean hit!

  • total headshot by today's standards... but legal hit back then...

  • dirty

  • This hit in the new NHL would be atleast a ten game suspension.

  • its clearly illegal cuz he didn't have the puck....

  • A better view of this hit is on the video "Paul Kariya Scott Stevens Animus" . Watch the hit at the 4:25 mark....and tell me it was clean. Blind side, late, elbow to the head hits are not clean.

  • @quadtran It was actually shoulder to the chest.

  • @quadtran You must be blind, I take it you simply listened to the commentators on that video. Anyone with even one single eye can see that this is not elbowing. In case you don't know anything about hockey which seems to be the case I can tell you that it's not elbowing when you have your arm against your body when you hit someone. Also blind side hits were allowed and commonplace in the NHL in that era. I agree that it was a bit late, but you made up the rest.

  • @KoivuTheHab let me ask you....do you think it was a clean hit? I'm not saying "legal"....Stevens didn't get a penalty...and I agree that was OK back in the day. But NHLers know the diff between respect and "honest" hockey, and what crosses the line. I'm curious your view on what side of the line this hit falls. (Watching it again at full speed...I'll give it to you that it could be more borderline...than cheap)

  • @quadtran My opinion is that when it happened it was clean. In today's NHL it wouldn't be a clean hit. That's how much the game has changed. Stevens never lacked respect for his fellow players, this isn't an issue. This was not an attempt to injure, it was an attempt to win the Stanley Cup. He would hit hard and clean to win. This didn't cross the line.

  • Kariya got drilled!

  • I think this is the best looking and cleanest (in terms of form, Stevens is not dirty) of Scott Stevens hit. Not just because of his posture but because of the way Kariya fell down. 180 on his back.

  • This video is so poorly edited they make it seem like Anaheim was cheering when Kariya got hit!

  • this was a clean hit

  • I'll never forget what Paul did after this goal.... NEVER

  • so nice to see a tough guy in the league. nowadays all we have are little bitches like steve moore. bertuzzi gives him one little punch and he is out for good and sues everybody in sight. way to go kariya!

  • i love how many people say that this was a dirty hit, that it was an elbow, and that stevens was a dirty player. FYI, he hit Kariya with his shoulder, it was a clean hit as no penalty was called, and Stevens in his long and tenured career, earned only 4 elbowing penalties.

  • @johnnycajxrt it was a dirty hit and I'll tell you why. 1. Kariya had passed the puck. 2. This was a pre-meditated hit, Stevens saw it coming 20 feet away. 3. Stevens, a top-notch hall of famer, should have known better than to pick on a guy who is much smaller than he is, and is a skilled-player, not a tough goon. Stevens could have let up a little and show some respect for another human being. You can't tell me he there was no intent to injure. That hit was meant to injure.

  • @johnnycajxrt He didnt have the puck thats why it was dirty. Stevens takes 4 or 5 strides and hits him when hes not looking like most of his hits. Stevens has done this throughout his career. He hits guys away from the play when they arnt looking. Its not all his fault the NHL never did anything about it. He would target guys not even in the play and level them. The NHl doesnt protect their players, they dont even protect their star players.

  • @kmet35 He may not have had the puck, but Kariya had just passed the puck, and rule of thumb back then was 3 seconds after a pass before a hit became interference. The hit was clean, and if he had taken 4-5 strides, it's a charging penalty. He was also a defenseman, so he was one of 2 people to stop the attackers, he hit Kariya to break up the scoring threat. As for the players not looking, that's what happens when you are looking down at the puck instead of in front of you to avoid the defense.

  • off the floor on the the board

  • such a trooper. such a beast before he became a traderous rat

  • Such a dirty hit... Stevens was just a dirty player

  • @MCBaseball27 What part of that was dirty? That was a clean hit, and Stevens was considered the best hitter in game... If you want dirty hits, then you should look up Bryan Marchment, and learn your hockey hitting rules while you're at it...

  • @MCBaseball27 Scott Stevens is a 3 time stanley cup winner & hall of famer i think i've said enough... climb back in your hole & get lost!

  • Nothing against Stevens, but Cups have no bearing on whether you're a dirty player. Claude Lemieux has four and that guy is one of the biggest bitches in the history of the league.

  • @ROCKETS2965 Claude Lemieux may have been a dirty player but he was an awesome player....

  • Dirty is dirty.

  • @ROCKETS2965 But Cups have no bearing on whether your dirty player....

  • I believe I already said that...

  • @ROCKETS2965 I never said they did!

  • @ogrebattle22763 Pardon me, because I'm Japanese-American (so I hate the Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz). But, I fear this was racially motivated, just like from Hun Gary Sutter.

  • @ogrebattle22763 and sucked whenever he played for Canada. Kariya has gold.

  • @jeroliver Who the fuck cares.....

  • @ogrebattle22763

No Paul... no medal for Canada in the 1998 Olympics,

oh yeah! Scott Stevens did participated that year! hmmm...

He can use his elbows to shove the Stanley cups up his faggot ass!

I love hockey, and all the hits and fights in it, but this was LOW !

  • @PostOrganic27 That was a clean hit
