TWLOHA (to write love on her arms) donates charity money to "Mercy Ministries" which has a cause called "pray away the gay". I think this is the major issue with TWLOHA, not the fact that their horizons are not broad enough. They should donate their money to suicide hotlines and depression services as opposed to giving money to religious groups. It's a good idea to bring awareness to self-harm and depression, but TWLOHA isn't doing the cause enough, in my opinion.
@blondevlogger cor, blimey. I didn't know that - thanks for the information. As an athiest and someone who is 100% in support of gay marriage I find those links disgusting, although I have to admit that what TWLOHA does for raising awareness of mental illness is incredible. I'm interested to see how the new Black Dog Tribe website pans out - hopefully it's successful.
As someone that has gone through some darkness and seen friends destroyed by depression and self harm. This charity means a lot to me, thank you making this video and making an effort. Though I must say you nearly put me off it with the "hipster" comment!
@nicholsukip I've seen a lot from having to deal with depression in various forms and to see a charity such as this really fills me with hope for sufferers in the future. I am sorry to hear of your experiences and hope that they are now in the past :) I knew that damn hipster comment would get me in trouble!
I'm so glad to see people supporting TWLOHA, I found the site a little while ago and I'm so impressed with what they're doing to raise awareness about depression. Half the battle is getting people to understand what depression is.
@matthehat It's such a great charity, the frustrating thing about depression is that there are things that can be done to help treat it, people just need to be educated about the nature and severity of the condition. TWLOHA is doing such a great job :)
Thank you for having such a cheerful, light-hearted approach to mental illness (and I mean that sincerely). Often times talking about our depression and being so serious about it is actually just depressing! Sometimes we just need to make light of our problems and talk about them openly like this so we don't attach a negative stigma to ourselves and maybe help others who are struggling to do the same.
@quiversandlines thank you so much for this comment. I've always been one of those people who make light of my own experiences so I hoped that would come across - not lack of caring. Depression is certainly one of those illnesses which can absolutely not be understood until you have experienced it first hand. I want people to see that there is the person, and then there is the depression: they are not one in the same. I truly hope that you find the strength to negotiate your struggle.
The "Put the money towards sharpies" made me burst out laughing ^^,
I know about this organisation from my friend, she's a big supporter :) I think attitudes towards mental illness are changing though, 10 years ago it was completely cast aside as something that's not serious. It's a good cause!
@SeanieBlahBlah I like to think that whilst talking about TWLOHA I have also possibly influenced the formation of a new Sharpie related charity.
I agree, these days it is becoming far more accepted; especially with depictions in the media - the popularity of biographies written by sufferers and movies focussing around depressed protagonists. I think this is such a great cause :) I just hope that people can take that step from inside their head, to asking for help.
Great charity. I always take part in TWLOHA, I have many friends who have suffered with depression and self-harm so I think it is a great charity to help with those issues. DFTBA.
@ItTakesII Thanks :) I completely agree, TWLOHA has such an awesome vibe I really think [and hope] it will give people the courage to speak up, and diminish the stigma, Happy P4A!
