Outstanding. Anyone wanting to start to get their head wrapped around "MODES" should really check out these two videos. I've watched a bunch and these may be the best two for getting started. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Really appreciated. Cheers to you.
This lesson was what I've been waiting for, for years! Thank you so much for this. I have books on modes and learned the various patterns, but you've just given me the insight that I needed to take everything to the next level. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! :D You are an amazing teacher and I've learnt a hell of a lot in just 15 minutes....now I can't wait to find my two signature modes :)
Aha ok, get it now. But correct me if I'm wrong, that was just a theoretical mistake, if you would play the scale there is no difference between the sharpened 4th or flattend 5th? No-flame-o ^^
@JurgenCeulemans Yes, you are correct, an F sharp and G flat are the same pitch but were not talking about enharmonic equivalents. Were talking about scale structure and intervals. If we were to call it a flat 5th then the scale would still contain the natural 4th, if we call it a sharp 4th then it will then contain a natural perfect 5th. It would be inappropriate to call it a flat 5 as it has structural implications on the scale, you are playing a sharp 4 in perspective to the Tonic/Root. Peace
Thanks for the lesson! The whole approach seems really cool! Just a minor point that Lydian is actually is a sharp 4 and not a flat 5. Might be worth putting a comment box on there to stop any crazy comments!
It was quiet funny when you played every mode without the drone it just sounded like a major scale untill you added the drone! Finally found a good way to understand the modes! Thank you very much for sharing this!! :)
@JurgenCeulemans Before this turns into a flame war. You're right Jurgen F# and Gb are the same note. However if you think of Lydian as having a flat 5 you'd end up keeping the natural fourth. I.e. 1 2 3 4 5b 6 7 8. Lydian is actually 1 2 3 4# 5 6 7 8. As in it has a natural fifth and an augmented fourth (with no natural fourth). I hope this make sense?
25 years of off and on playing, trying in vain to make some sense of it all... and you've just given me that moment of clarity! Unbelievable... I can't thank you enough. I'm gonna have to buy one of your guitars in the new year. Any ML1's available?
My god! I've been playing guitar for years and Modes just confused the hell out of me. I have never seen them explained so simply. Thank you Thank you!!!!
Rob - great lesson; this is actually how I teach the modes (droning the open E) to other guitar players and my guitar students - because the other ways that they are taught are so confusing. I was actually going to make a video like this one, but I see there is no longer a reason for it...
I must say the "drone" trick is great. I notice I can fool around with modes when I'm playing to a backing track but I tend to get lost if I'm just improvising for the hell of it. The "ear interval calculation" thing is a very interesting thing. Thanks Rob!
Hearing the E major scale being played in a different position feels like the same old thing, but expecting Chappers to play the low E string and let it ring while playing the scale makes me impatient, and as soon as he does, his facial expression and "mythical" improvisations totally crack me up everytime
dear mr chappers, correct me if i'm wrong please because i'm getting confused. i thought u got dorian mode by shifting all the notes of the major scale up, say a c major scale and i made the d the root that would be dorian and g# the root for phrygian? are you using different positions of the scale than me because i'm playing the c dorian scale as: e string 10 12 13 a string:10 12 14 d string 10 12 14?
From wikipedia, adapted to "E" (wiki writes for C)
E Ionian (E-F#-G#-A#-B-C#-D#-E) is also F# Dorian (F#-G#-A#-B-C#-D#-E-F#), G# Phrygian (G#-A#-B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#) and so on, until you return to the original E Ionian Mode
@verypeachy1 if you dont hear the droned E you just hear the major scale but in a different key (depending on which mode) but when you drone the E you hear it as in the key of E but it sound like a different mode
@verypeachy1 You can apply it to any note and there are 7 modes to each that have different styles and each different mode on the same notes will work well with other minor scales in most cases
Im learning with my own teacher mainly using G as the root while soloing over different modal chord progressions interlinking different scales which is a total mind**** for me cos i hate scales as it is
this is THE BOMB! i was trying to teach my friend how mode works and he was like "uh? what?", know what ill do? ill paste this video on his facebook page you're a good teacher!
Maybe somebody has pointed it out with this video being three years old, but I caught a mistake you should maybe correct with an annotation. You said that Lydian had a flat 5th, when in the case of Lydian it's actually a sharp 4th.
How do you know what chord the root is? I mean I can figure out what the open strings are because of the names of the strings themselves, but I wouldn't have known where to find an E anywhere else on the neck if you hadn't shown it
@Lolz4Every1 yes all the modes in this video are in the key of E... to play in the other keys you just need to change this same positions and intervals all over the neck, for example 3 frets before if you want to play in key of G...
you are an amazing teacher loll... mix easy to understand lessons with hilarity (too bad my english teachers not as good as you eh :P maybe i'd learn how to spell) and all around epicness
Thanks, I finally got the whole picture out of the puzzle. It finally make sense why bag pipe keeps a continuous sound in the back, why an other cithar playing only one note all thru the play while the master was playing his heart out. While violins filling the air complements the other instruments indeed bringing a"mood". Btw we have in our brain a large portion dedicated to intervals. One reason why one can hum the rythm of a phrase or a music; long before we can master it. IE: "a language"
Great lesson mate quick question for ya, or anyone else that can help. You have used your open E to drone out, can use an open A or D then drop the different modes beneath that to change it up a bit??
@mendoza51100 It's perfectly possible. But you can't just shift the fingering pattern down one string and expect it to work, you need to figure out how the notes play out on the lower strings first. As soon as you figure that bit out you can shift around between the E and A strings effortlessly. The D string too, but there are only a couple of modes that would work with those 3 notes specifically! Hope this helps a bit and keep at it. :)
I get the concept of modes but when playing my ear just keeps trying to kick it into the relative minor and ignore my fingers. Do I just need to practice it more and listen to more modal work or am I missing something?
Everything in this video is amazing except your views on locrian! it sounds so mysterious and dark and demeaning and beautiful. Dissonance is a wonderful tool.
I've been struggling for about 2 years to learn those mods and now I finally got them. This really is the easiest way to learn them. Thanks for this great video! I can hardly wait for the next video
Correct me if im wrong but i have this understanding that the modes have the same notes, but at different orders, is that right?

Utter git. Not only can you play but your an incredible and watchable teacher. I totally agree with the comment "I can't get my jaw off the floor, thank you for the most understandable explanation of any form of musical theory on the internet.".
I at first didn't completely understand you, but than when i learned intervals and stuff and a friend gave me some advice. It became totaly Clear! thnx
Great videos. I've been a professional musician for years now and must admit that theory was never my strong point. I'm at the point of finishing our 4th album and have been avoiding writing some lead for a while :) (got some serious block)
Your videos have really brought the fun back and make theory understandable and less daunting. Keep it up.
very cool, ive been building modes in my head using the the tone format and rolling it like a treadmill. this is better! maybe ive been doing it wrong, moving the root on the low E up and down for modes. locrian is utter failage, I cant stop laughing !

Hey Man, thanks for your tutorial, I think your great teacher and amazing player but...
Please check your facts bro, The Lydian Mode in no way has a flat 5th.
It is a Sharp 4th. e.g. C D E F-sharp G A B C.
If it had a flat 5th: C D E F G-flat A B C
which would mean the intervals would be in the wrong order to create lydian mode.
If you get me?
- Peace.

Utter git. Not only can you play but your an incredible and watchable teacher. I totally agree with the comment "I can't get my jaw off the floor, thank you for the most understandable explanation of any form of musical theory on the internet.".
Get you on to television my boy.

Best explanation of modes I've seen. Thanks for that! Your other lessons are excellent as well.
