Herzog made a brilliant film but he did a great disservice by not including a Psychiatrist evaluation of Treadwell and his range of emotions that come out during the film. As a physician who only watched the film because my kids wanted to see it, it became apparent in the first 20 minutes of the movie that Treadwell suffered from Bipolar disorder and should have been on medication. However, experience shows many of these people quit their medication from time to time & Treadwell did the same.

I suppose Herzog wasn't "provoking danger" when he isolated an eight-person crew in the middle of the rainforest or tried to haul a steamship up a mountain using only line and tackle. Or when he shot a documentary in Cameroon during a military coup. Or when he jumped into a field of cactus. Or when he let a bullet sit in his pelvis untreated for hours. To be completely fearless is insanity defined.
Herzog is not only a great film maker but also a great provocateur and entertainer. I have no doubt the bb-gun assassin was a set-up with Herr H in on it. This just adds to his legendary status. GRIZZLY MAN was one of the best films of 2005 and a tribute to Herzog's honesty and commitment to art and truth. It moved me to tears of joy for the amazing experiences Treadwell had with bears and foxes and tears of sorrow for his insanity and tragic death. Only a complete idiot could miss the sympathy Herzog felt for Treadwell even as he warned the audience about the dangers of sentimentalizing the wilderness.

Degree courses force wannabe directors to work through a very narrow scope of what we know works rather than what nobody's thought to try before, and that's why their productions are often unimpressive and have absolutely no staying power.

I suppose Herzog wasn't "provoking danger" when he isolated an eight-person crew in the middle of the rainforest or tried to haul a steamship up a mountain using only line and tackle. Or when he shot a documentary in Cameroon during a military coup. Or when he jumped into a field of cactus. Or when he let a bullet sit in his pelvis untreated for hours. Herzog is not only a great film maker but also a great provocateur and entertainer. I have no doubt the bb-gun assassin was a set-up with Herr H in on it. This just adds to his legendary status. I can see it fooled most people but not me. And I'm fine with this kind of stunt. Not many people would submit themselves to even a bb hit, but he did.

GRIZZLY MAN was one of the best films of 2005 and a tribute to Herzog's honesty and commitment to art and truth. It moved me to tears of joy for the amazing experiences Treadwell had with bears and foxes and tears of sorrow for his insanity and tragic death. Only a complete idiot could miss the sympathy Herzog felt for Treadwell even as he warned the audience about the dangers of sentimentalizing the wilderness.
