  • @MusicforMe123 He's already a major star in the Birmingham Royal Ballet in the UK. :)

  • looks very interesting....

  • This moive is taking place in the 1980s. At the begining of the moive Li was in the shopping mall. One of the shots show them at the ATM getting some cash. Did anyone notice the 20 dollar bills are the NEW one's. Those pinkish 20 dollar bills DON"T exsist back in the 80's. LOL

  • is this thing against communism?????????

  • @jackuy12345 No it's not against communism. I watched this with a chinese girl studying in Australia and she thought that it was good, I also loaned the DVD to a friend of mine from Shanghai, and he and his wife liked the movie too.

  • It's such a shame that crap movie's like "saw" and exersit and devil get advertised, yet masterpeices like this get over looked. wth is up with that? people are disgusting.

  • Why on fucking earth these types of movies ever get advertised? How are we supposed to find out about them? Eh!

  • @ninuxy It's an Aussie production (Bruce Beresford directed), so it won't have got much attention in the US, being a non-hollywood film.

  • why would you ever read this book? then you cant see the DANCING. this guy is incredible

  • dude, I just cried only watching the trailer, there's no way I can make it through the movie

  • Nice legs!

  • He did a business breakfast at our school in the Gold Coast a few months ago.

  • i red the book a few months ago

    its still my favourite book

    its really touching

i really wanna see this movie

  • it's really ironic though. the actor that plays li learnt ballet at the same dance acadamy in beijing a Li, and the actress that pplays mary Mackendry was taught ballet by the real mary mackendry at the Australian Ballet company! i met Li Cunxin, he is amazing and really nice

  • That's not ironic. The actors/dancers were probably chosen for this reason.

  • OMG I am brazilian and I used to pratice ballet, jut for 1 year. I saw his interview when he came to Brazil. I bought the book and I cried a lot. Now watching this my eyes are wate and my skill creepied. Amazing man \o/

  • wow. that was the only word that came out of my mouth. hehe.

  • This is such a great film. The trailer always gives me chills when I see it. Even though it's not completely true to real life I love it nonetheless.

  • It was a fantastic movie ~ I watched it a second time yesterday and almost unconsciously wanted to clap after Li's performance in Don Quiotet (bad spelling).... Amazing story by Li Cunxin, amazing performance by Chi Cao ~

  • Could anyone tell when this film will be shown in the US? Will it be limited or full release in the US?

  • believe or not i actually played Li's son in tennis, as i live in australia, i bet his son in tennis, met his wife Mary McKendry they are extremely nice, and had dinner with them. i had no idea who they were until my mother told me lol

  • 1:55 there is a steam train - Zig Zag railway Lithgow Australia engine BB18 1/4 no. 1072, a 4-6-2 former Queensland government railways. Footage borrowed from 'Stealth', a movie no one probably remembers.

  • This is the best world movie I've seen this year. I nearly cried when he saw his parents at the concert.

  • Wow, this movie is the whole movie in 2 and a half minutes, literally (then again, that's what a trailer is, right?). I really liked it. I want toread the book now! I'm happy to hear that it's faithful to the book because I HATE movie adaptations that are completely different.

  • remarkable movie.I watched it last night. But it's a pity that we chinese cannot get freedom within our motherland.I am 25 years old but havent been told any about election right in china.Life is only for making myself alive.

  • i just watched the movie and omg, cried my balls off. it's such an inspiring movie.

  • THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!

  • depends on your tastes. i saw it today, and even as a comedy/horror-loving teenager- i thought it was bloody great.

  • i dont know y but i like the way he says fantastic....i read this book and i loved it...and i watched the movie, it was awsome, i think everyone should read the book and watch it

  • I saw this film last night, was it really shot in Australia and directed by Aussies? Because i think this was a pretty good film.

  • Bruce Beresford, the director, is an Aussie apparently.

  • Saw it today absolutely amazing just like the book :D

  • EPIC book EPIC movie

  • People who think Li Cunxin is a dooshbag.....

U R AN IDIOT . Try to start off in poverty and then become one of the best dancers in the WHOLE WORLD!!!!! I dont think u will succeed.

Anyway, its an amazing book and soon i will be able to see the movie (I am so, so excited!!!)

  • hey that guy from deseprate housewifes!

  • relax neptune, i'm chinese too but i like the book. yes it is unflattering to china but china has changed alot since. it is rich now.

besides its more of a personal struggle story more than anything.

  • He's not ashamed of being Chinese

Where does he say or imply that?

if anything he wanted to go back to his roots but was unable to

    --

    Anyway, I LOVE THE MOVIE

  • I just saw it, this movie is SO GOOD!!

And Li Cunxin was at the cinimar - the actor in the movie is so similar to him in real life!

  • yeah ,same like we look all western people the same

  • Some ballet dancer defecting is a serious business.

China need to chill the fuck out

  • do u mean 'defecating'? wot exactly does defecting mean?

  • Defect:

To disown allegiance to one's country and take up residence in another

  • The man in this story is a potato queen (asian who only likes white).

He's not aware of the fact that most white people's skin age so much earlier, and they are genetically more at risk of cancers like breast, colorectal and skin cancers.

  • OMG! I saw the movie yesterday and it was soooooooooo good! lol must c movie

  • the sound is pretty funny

  • For someone who feels inferior and ashamed by his own roots as a Chinese, I feel sympathetic to his values because being a Chinese living in a poor country shouldn't make you feel less dignified as a person.

But to write a book to tell the westerners how much his country sucks and how great and fantastic the western culture is is just self-defaming. I won't pay respect to this kind of person. A shame for Chinese.

  • Ok. Let's see... ballet superstardom vs. 70s communist China.

    ... yeah, his country sucked.

  • almost seems like you got the wrong idea from this. I suppose i cant be sure, becasue i have never read the book, but from this trailer i got the impression he loved china and wanted to go back, but obviously, not under the circumstances of being FORCED to dance. Pretty sure he has every right to bad mouth a government that robbed him of his freedom. Doesn't mean he dislikes china, and even if he did, its probably a result of torment rather than clear thinking.

  • The author is a man of no roots. He's just writing a book to tell the world that his country sucks and great talents should flee the country if they want to achieve international success - This is a wrong attitude to have!

If you choose to look down at your own culture and to eat potato not rice, it's your own choice. But to degrade your country and culture as if being a Chinese puts you to great shame, you're a shame of yourself, not a shame of the nation.

  • How is telling what was true degrading your country. Do you think the Russian author Alexander Solzhenitsyn was not a patriot for telling the truth of the Russian Gulag system under President Stalin and Brezhnev?

  • i highly doubt he wrote the book just to bad mouth his country. He had injustices inflicted upon him by the chinese governement, of course he is going to speak out about it, and probably not because he hates china, but if anything, in the hope that he can prevent such injustices from happening again, and maybe make china a place of freedom.

  • You missed the point..

Firstly it wasnt his idea to go to America in the first place. He didnt flee to America to achieve international success, He only went there because the officals told him too

And secondly he wanted to go back to china and did eventually when back to china at the end of the movie

  • I have watched this 1 million times and each time im in tears.. its funny aswell because Madeline Eastoe plays a character and shes the solist in the swan lake.. haha

  • OMG I JUST CRIED!

  • I know one of the few movies I have watch where I nearly cried.

  • To the people that knock ballet, you should appreciate that it is one of the highest feats of human physical and artistic ability, on par with gymnastics in skill and discipline. I did it for one year to stengthen my back after a serious motorbike accident, and it was incredibly hard, and fun.

I remember walking around the bar, not "en-pointe", but on the ball of my feet and I had to take the next day off work because my calf muscles were so sore I could barely walk. It's awesome exercise.

  • damn it it's in today and i'm like busting to see it cause i've red the novel and its cool

  • U need to read the book to get this story in. Or you wont understand it.

  • i'm going to this tonight! can't wait, it looks amazing.

  • this movie seems to act as a device to reinforce american rhetoric of the country being great with all its ideals of freedom and equality etc. it will probably do well based on the fact that americans will love to hear about how great their country is and how china would be a shit place to live in.

  • Is this the rhetoric that Cunxin wrote or the one that the Australian director is adding in? I find it amusing that it's being released on the 60th aniversary though.

  • Basically this story is telling its audience that the author is a potato queen (asian who would give up his country for a caucasian woman), and that CHINA sucks so great talents would rather flee the country to pursue big international fame.

  • I like socialism as well. But if it was a choice between living under socialism or banging a hot ranga, I think the decision is obvious.

And who cares, it's some ballet dancer defecting.

  • Get help

  • its all based of the autobiography he wrote. i had to read parts of the book in school but it seemed lyk a very interesting book and so does the movie.

  • similar to nureyev's situation no? but super dramatised?

  • No mate, not super dramatised at all, these things actually happened to Li, go out and read the book
