I hadn't heard of an Axolotl until I read the excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins. In the chapter 'Axolotl's tale' he explains more about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. Axolotls treated with thyroxine lose their gills and become dry land salamanders.

Yes, Axolotles, in the wild, are going extinct. But they are bred in extremely large numbers in captivity. Many, healthy, happy axolotles are produced by private breeders. These pets are NOT taken from the wild.

Before you guys go smartass on the creator: Those are fish that axolotls eat and that do not eat the axolotl's gills. Some fish do, these don't.

And while I agree that he should have gravel, you don't see the whole tank, who says that there is no hiding place?

Also, axolotls may be endangered, but they are legal pets almost everywhere in the world.

And Guppys don't touch axolotls. My guppys swim far away from my lotls because they tend to get eaten by the latter.
