  • OMG I finally get it!!! thank you so much this is by far the best vid i have seen for paper piecing...most others i can't even watch the whole thing because i'm so confused within the first min! so basically you would have to make copies of the paper template for however many blocks you need to make? and the overall purpose of paper piecing is accuracy?

  • GREAT video! I have NEVER quilted, but will be participating in a paper piece quilt along next month. You made it so easy to understand!

  • @1951penna Tell me about it! I tried to do that too.. and it was just not clicking! Glad I could help you! :o)

  • You are an amazing teacher. Thank you so much for making all the teaching videos.

Please keep them coming. Do you have a video tutorial on mitered borders on quilts? Again, thank you so much.

  • @TheBuford123 Thank you! I have fun making them for you all. I don't have a video for mitered quilt borders yet. But I'll add it to my list of tutorials to do. Thanks for the suggestion! :o)

  • I am new to hand piecing (quilting period) and I do not know much yet but this video was EXTREMELY understandable for a newbie. I am going to go through your other vids to see if you have anything on hand piecing but just wanted to let you know that you are a great teacher. Does this method still work if you are sewing by hand? I really like those diamonds you did on the center of the fabric. Awesome!

  • @Ilovethemountains09 I don't do any hand piecing so I couldn't tell you if it will work the exact same way. I would assume if you hand stitched in the same way I machine stitched that it would be fine... I don't see why not. Good luck.

  • @crittyj21

I was thinking about this..I think the best way to get scraps right, would be to make (plastic/chipboard type material) templates of what you want for your layout (+ seam allowance) and trim your scraps ahead of time..this way you could splice pieces where you like-or need to..just a thought..I am a total newb on this

  • @mimiakimbo Thats a great idea... it would take some time.. but definitely would ensure you didn't have a piece that was too small. Thanks!

  • This makes so much sense now! I've been doing a mystery quilt, (every few weeks they release a rule and dimensions, and you have to make your block for your quilt according to that rule) and the current rule is to do some paper piecing, and I've had the hardest time figuring it out, thank you!!

  • @Nanalisan No problem! It's soooo much easier once you know what you are supposed to be doing and the steps click in your head. I'm glad I could help!

  • You do want to start out with slightly larger pieces. As Vanessa said in the video...later on, when you feel more confident, you can use smaller pieces. I use scraps from other projects, and if I have anything large enough to use in crazy quilts, I'll save those after trimming. I am not a fan of paper piecing...but do use it. Once you decide to do an entire quilt...and you have a good idea of the size for each step...cut all needed in that size/color, put in a baggie with a label, easier!

  • hi im also new to quilting and now trying paper piecing, ive been confused and as you said '' lock your self up till you get it'' thats what im going to do lol... ive got some paper piecing quilt lables to make and boy some pieces are soo small, but willing to try thanks toni

  • ***Smiling*** Thank You so much for this GREAT video. I had searched all over for a simple way to do this....nothin'! You reeally did a fabulous job. This resembles a block I have been trying to do from Marcia Hohn's Quilters Cache. Thank you so much for taking the time to share!!!!

  • Fantastic tutorial! I think I am going to try this!!

  • @thecraftygemini please know that I tried to view yr latest vid today that is in my subscription box but it says it is Private. Can you Please change this as I love yr vids and miss watching. You always have such great tips!

  • I've been struggling with piecing for a while now and have checked out probably 12 different books from the library and spent several months. I love your videos and instruction is easy for me to understand. I'm gonna buy your pdf on the pillow case dress, I love this idea and it should be easy enough for me as a pretty much beginner. I am so glad I found your videos, you are great tool to my crafting projects. I'm a fan and a follower !!!!! ;-)

  • You succeeded where books have failed--now I think I get paper piecing! I really appreciate the effort you put forth to share your knowledge, thanks!

  • I like it! Very good tutorial. Good job, I could acually follow this and get it right! Love it

  • Thank you so much. This is a very useful video. I appreciate the help!

  • Hey Vanessa, Where did you get your little iron? Ive seen them in a couple videos and thats something that would be much more realistic for the amount of space I have to sew in!!!!

  • @sweetstkissez22 You can check out my review and the info on the mini iron here: craftygemini.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-iron-that-could.html

  • Hi Vanessa, I just found your channel and I LOVE it!!!! I am so excited. I have very very little sewing knowledge but you make it so easy to understand. Currently my sewing machine is not working but I will get it fixed very soon so I can try your bib and baby pants out of a shirt tutorial. I also have a 9 month old and I am excited to make some pants for him. Thank you soooo much for your videos. I have been watching for about 2 hours. I want my sewing machine so bad now...

  • For a long time I have been trying to find a class that teaches paper piecing, but I think with this video, I am starting to understand it and I may just be able to do paper piecing. I just wish it didn't waste so much fabric. This has been a very useuful video!!! Thank You.

  • I didn't have a tutorial for the first paper pieced square I did, but I found that if I wanted to repeat the square several times, it was easier for me to take the pattern and make out cut it apart and then cut our cardboard pieces of the pattern about 3/8 inch bigger than the pattern. (this is what the instructions told me to do)... Then I worked it around like you did.. it was easy to handle.. I have done that with all the paper piecing I have done.Great tutorial. I like the pattern..

  • BRAVO!!! - no one has ever explained this technique clearly. You must be a great professor!!!

  • Thank you for this tutorial Vanessa! I watched another one last week that was just confusing as could be. After watching yours though, I think I could actually do this! I'll keep ya updated!

  • THAT IS SOO GREAT!!! thank you so much

  • This was a very easy to follow tutorial. But it seems to waste a lot of fabric. Is there a way to use actual scraps for something like this?

  • @Crittyj21 You are right... it does waste fabric. I suspect that as you become an expert on paper piecing you will better be able to gauge how big your pieces of fabric will be. Because the fabric being sewn is meant to be bigger than the template it does require the trimming down of fabric = waste. Even if you used your scraps on a paper piecing project you would still have some waste from the excess fabric you'd still have to trim.

  • @TheCraftyGemini Okay! Makes sense, thanks. :) I could see this as being a great way to use those little 3-6 inch scraps left over.

  • @Crittyj21 I am having fun making a "Crumb Quilt" with leftover scraps that someone else was throwing out. If you do a google search you will be able to find instructions for a crumb quilt.

  • This tutorial takes away the intimidation factor in piecing together blocks! I think I can make any type of block after watching this. Excellent explanations and demonstrations. Thank you!

  • Great instruction on paper piecing - finally understand what I am supposed to be doing. Thankyou so much.

  • Gracias por el tutorial.

  • Great tutorial! Can't wait to try it out this weekend.

  • I've been trying to get this technique to come out right for year. Finally you're video makes it all perfectly clear and simple, thank you.

  • NICE GOING VANESSA! I agree that you've made the concept of paper-piecing so easy to understand and accomplish. I saw this little travel iron in another video of yours awhile ago (and I think on your website too) and bought one for myself. So for those people asking what it's called, it's "SteamFast SF-717 Home-and-Away Mini Steam Iron". I bought mine from an online source back in April for about $17 and got free shipping because my total order with another item was over $25. Tx 4 the tut!

  • Outstanding tutorial!!

  • thanks for sharing

  • Tks for taking the mystery out of this technique!!

Is your iron a travel iron?? It just seems so much easier to use than a large iron for small projects. Would you share the info on it??

  • Great video! My first quilt was a paper pieced string quilt...so my fabric pieces could be any size as long as the finished square was cut down to the size of the paper. I've never done any paper piecing like this though...may have to try it out :)

BTW you have the cutest like iron!

  • Great tutorial! Thanks!

  • Awesome. Thanks so much for explaining this. You make it seem so simple to do. I can not wait to start trying this. You are the best on Youtube.

  • Amazing. Thank you for spelling it out. Great job...good reference vid...I am favoriting it.
