I've only seen Johnny three times...first was in the early 70's at Winterland, then in the 80's at the Sacramento Blues Festival, and the last time was [this is a wild guess] around 2004 at the Aqua Club in Citrus Height's [Sacramento] at that,Johnny had to play sitting down and i was right on the other side of his monitor...felt like i was watching an old friend! I was!
lights came on and there's Johnny struttin across the stage in three huge steps (crankin) " Leland Mississippi Blues" ...christ ! never forget it, no food, the Allman Brothers delivered a truck and wagon full of Georgia Peaches which were thrown out to us stoned starvin wretches , hence " Eat A Peach" ! everybody bangin in harmony on the water tower to Santana - somebody stop me !
the shrooms had me cloud walkin brother.. Johnny came on right after the Jefferson Airplane...the stage lights were off, the roadies were changin up, everyone was just groovin in the fog when "whaaaoooo yeaaaahaahh da da dada da (super loud), everybody at once fell backwards into the lap, drink or joint of the person behind em -
hey Captain Private, glad to meet cha man ! I was at all three Atlanta Int'l Pop festvl's at the Atlanta Int'l Speedway outside Macon Ga..I'll go to my grave with those memories - you were either ' flipped out' or 'flipped in' there - shit !
man you want to here this guy for real? i remember he did a live show somewhere and it was called Johnny Winter AND. Man what a fucking album :). What album :)
@jazzynet1 wowo that is a name out of the Past....the album Johnny Winter AND...i am gonna get my starship hat on and try to navigate and find some of that goodness
that was such a blast!! loved that festival, and those days!! i never grew up, and never will. that's me on top of the vw bug!! i was stunned when i saw that pic!! i am so glad i went to that, great memories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was 17 (57 now) and a friend and I who had been AWED by Johnny the year before at the 1st Atl. Fes. (much smaller-app. 80,000) at the Raceway. But when THIS was recorded my friend and I were actually LEANING AGAINST the stage!!!! What a memory!!!!
The closing act, in spite of the acts listed in the notes here as having closed, was Ritchie Havens, as the sun was coming up on Monday morning. The festival itself ( music on the main stage-wise ) was Friday day/night ( all night long ) Saturnday day/night ( all night long ) and Sunday day/night ( all night long )... Havens wrapped things up. I know this because I was standing right behind him on stage.
I was there... i don't think you could quite say it was overlooked, being there were 750,000 freaks there.
Worked in the OD tents for the most part, backstage a lot of the time ( my Red Cross armband got me entry, no questions asked, anywhere in the festival ).
hard to believe it was 40 years ago... where has the time gone.
I was there - summer of 1970; we drove down from Texas; I was 17; Atlanta eventually became a free event; w/ close to 1/2 million, the Governor declared it a free zone; no searches, no hassles, no busts. People were dancing, fucking, selling & doing drugs naked & the pigs just waved. Man it was hot. About sundown Johnny Winter's learjet buzzed low overhead; freaked us all out; he played later in the evening. I was tripping hard. Atlanta was last of the really big festivals. USA sucks now; sad.
@4ezMoney I was there. Don't remember seeing you. tho. Actually, there's a LOT I don't remember, BUT I DO remember Johnny Winter And (with Rick Derringer). A friend & I actually worked our way all the way thru the crowd and LEANED against the stage!!! We had seen Johnny the year before (much smaller crowd-app. 80,000) & had NEVER HEARD of him. But we were hooked. I believe he was better the 1st time, but it could have been the SHOCK & AWE!!!
@1953patterson Man you're (we're) an old fart now! I'm surprised you can remember anything from back then, grandpa. :)~ LOL!!
The parts you (we) can recall are some of the wildest times of our lives. Hey remember those OD tents set up for bad trips? ...and the dealers even displayed signs; some even had naked dancing girls for advertising!
Even though I don't know ya, it's damn cool to hear from a dude who was there. There's a utube vid for Hendrix in Atlanta too.
I am now 57 years old & I- ME- wiggled myself (and a friend) & was actually leaning against the stage when this was recorded. What a TREAT!!! Ain't God Great? Love you, Johnny
@1953patterson I WAS ONE SOME REALLY STRONG ACID WHEN HE PLAYED...WAS A STORM WHIPPING UP RIGHT THEN?I REMEMBER[OR THINK I DO] JOHNNY WOULD PLAY HARRDER AND HARDER,THE CROWD GOT WILDER AND WILDER AND THE WIND GOT MORE AND MORE STRONGER...I THOUGHT IT WAS ALL CONNECTED..
UNBELIVEABLE!!!!!! I went to this festival!!!!! I got chills when i saw the post, JW was OUTSTANDING, the closing acts were Ten Years After and closing with HENDRIX on July 4 late at nite THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
awesome set... there's also a pretty sick jam with Johnny from the Allmans' last set (festival closer). A few people probably also sitting in here.
Ten Years After, Hendrix, Allmans, many more in the lineup at the the raceway in Warner Robbins. My mom was at this show. Hendrix's set was electrifying (SSB @ Midnight on the 4th), complete Jimi and Allman Bros. available on CD now. Thanks for posting.
Did your Mom work the show or come for the concert? I worked directly for the producer & we had a fairly large work team ahead of time to set it up & I'd love to connent with some of those folks again!
I LOVED Johnny Winter's playing during this period. His tone was unbeatable, amazing finger vibrato and tortured voice. Thank you SO much for this clip. I haven't heard it for decades although i have the LP (abit worn out though). Thank you jimbosity007.
What a great posting. Thanks! This is a pitch-perfect performance of his signature piece. The real deal. Saw him many times in the 70's and he was never less than great, but this performance is epic. Is there anything else from this concert? Also, is there a CD of this (Not Austin,Texas studio--I have that)?
nothwind: Yes, "JW And" and the amazing "JW AND Live". (contains that incredible version of 'Its My Own Fault'). It's a shame no one recorded Johnny's whole performance at Woodstock. He did many songs and did the BEST show although the producers thought he was too abstract. (perhaps too Blues based?)
I was lucky to be at the 2nd Atlanta Intl Pop Festival. 1970. YEOW! The real Allmans ruled TWICE...BB KING had more encores than any other performer there....The best
Great post here but not Johnny Winter in Atlanta... JW played the 1st Atl Int'l Fest in July 1969, the month before Woodstock. I was there. They didn't play the 2nd Fest in '70. I was there also.
Also, this post not the same JW group that played in Atlanta and on the first two Columbia records records (trio - Winter, Shannon, Turner). This clip has 2 guitars... sounds like 'Johnny Winter And' w/Rick Derringer I believe circa ''71-72. Saw them here in Atlanta also.
Yes YT2...I was 18 and the Allmans used to play Piedmont Park in midtown Atlanta on Sundays... Pretty cool stuff but I'm not sure if we knew just how good these early experiences were. Seeing Duane up close was amazing... 1st time (I remember) seeing a '59 Burst in action, up close. It seems like they played everything they knew but I distinctly remember the slide work on Dreams and even better, and though it wasn't released yet, the funky, Don't Keep Me Wondering...
I saw Johnny Winter's audition for Bill Graham in the 60s! I was at the Fillmore in SF on a Sun. afternoon. I don't remember who the headliners were, but bands often auditioned on Sun. During a break, these guys started setting up. Nobody knew who they were! Then this albino cat appeared. When the trio was ready the bass player said "We just drove here from Texas; I hope you like us." They laid us out! Wow! Seems like Bloomfield had been talking him up. He became a really big star.
Nice story! As a teen,I spent many Saturday nights[and Tuesdays for new auditioning talent]at the Fillmore East,a former Yiddish theater on the lower East Village.
Caught everybody but Hendrix[of all the acts to miss!!]
Cool. I saw Winter at the Fillmore West (Carousel Ballroom) which Graham seized after losing lease at the old Fillmore. Saw all my blues heroes BB, Albert, Otis, Freddie, Buddy, Bloomfield, Greenie, Cream in their prime. I saw Jimi one night in '68 at the old Fillmore. Mid ist row balcony, no people, $4.00. I was a snobby blues purist then; hated Jimi. I only went to see Albert. But, I was impressed by his musicianship! Even before he played a note. It was like seeing Miles Davis! I dig um now!
jimbosity007: I saw Jimi about 4 times onstage in London and several times shopping in the street. He was a nice guy...very approachable. As much as i loved Jimi his performances weren't as consistant as Winter's(bad trips). Sometimes he couldn't even speak or stand let alone play well. I've can't recall JW ever playing badly in 1970.
have seen him in 2006 and 2007 in Germany and shall meet him in May in Austria and Czeh Rep.He is improving well.If he would not play anything just come on stage the audience would die for him,he is the greatest for ever.
