A side note while McGoohan was debating on how to wrap it all up(If he could) Leo McKern was in another production that demanded he be clean shaven. McKern was then brought back This is why there is a shaving scene at 11:15.
All You Need is Love played behind a sub-machine gun battle. Ha Ha.
Classical Allegorical tale about individualism and freedom vs 'the state' - Kenneth Griffith's (The Judge) dialogue all the way through this is, i'm sure, speaking some truth's .. this has been my mantra. Thanks Pat :)
Actually the Butler represented FreeMasonry, the one who carries the temporary social rules of good and evil, for the secular system: the black and the white. It changes loyalties as the system updates itself. And it does update itself, in this show.
Here you have the Parliament of Man, showing the fully organized socialist state, where democracy is a polite pretense. The Village is the Global Village.
No. 6, I'm sad to say, didn't defeat No.1 in this show.
'There's nothing you can do - but you can learn how to play the game. It's easy...' Maybe - just maybe - that sums it up. Or, after, the door opens, the song continues, but, the lyrics here might reflect McGoohan's ultimate belief: 'all you need...is love.'
Play the game - go along with the 'status quo,' or, go with your heart.
A yin & a yang.
As many people feel that #1 IS #6 (as in the intro, when he asks, who #1 is, he's told YOU are, number 6), maybe it's about the battle within us all.
What are we to make of Number 1? I won't spoil it, but I can't help but wonder what would have happened if someone else had unmasked him. Would it have been the same Number 1?
When the rocket takes off, Rover perishes. Our planet is a global 'Village' with a huge 'Rover' revolving around us. We are all Prisoners! Rover represents our fear of the unknown, and whilst that fear exists - we are motionless. The rocket takes off to 'explore' i.e the Moon thus conquering our 'fear of the unknown'. Goodbye Rover!

My favorite version of the theme, with the opening flyover revealing the name of the hotel.

There is no number one.
"Big brother is not watching you. It's a headless blunder operating under the illusion of a master plan", to quote something completely different.
If there were a number one, all you'd have to do is find him and shoot him.

Did anyone else ever wonder if maybe the Butler was really Number One?

@WestVirginiaRebel
it would have been cool :-) anyhow a less rushed finale would have been better for revealing number 1

@WestVirginiaRebel I agree, I think it was the Butler all along, he is there in every scene, to watch over everything that goes on in the Village.
