I think its to do with copyright... you cannot play 'some' music without permission of the owner (record label) etc...unless for private use, i:e in your own home. If you read the labels of records or CDs, it explains the rules.

There are many houses in America that do couture - hand-made one-off pieces - but to be official an Haute Couture house you must be based in Paris among other rules to be accepted officially by the syndicate.

I don't think the rule is you must be based in paris, but approved and licensed / recognized by the body that overseas them.

it might be one and the same base / licensed but in my book it doesn't say exactly based in paris. I could just go there :P

@ishedonism actually that's not true, there is one american couturier that is "recognized" by the parisian body that conveys "haute couture" status.

Yes Ralph Rucci did Couture for 3 season, but he was never on the offical list of coututre fashion houses, he was a guest but he did couture none the less. Now in reply to Shakaama... your half right the house does not have to be based in Paris but (this might have to be put into 2 posts) and these are the rules the house must have a couture atelier that IS based in Paris that creats hand made garments for private clients. There must be atleast 15 people employed in the atelier...

And each season the house must present a new collection that consists of atleast 35 garments. All of these things must be done in order for a house to stay on the list of offical couture houses. So with all of these urules in place is easy to see why most houses are still french, which is whu I plan on moving to France and starting there lol. But I think u can do it Shakaama :0). I heard someone tell one of the reality tv queens that started a clothing line "go to china babe, don't stick to america or you'll go broke" The girl was rather sad about it. I'm with her. There has to be a way, and i don't mean illegal aliens working for change, to have an American house.

@shakaama well to go at a gowns like that you practically building on the bodice in layers. and Americans are allowed to call the clothing couture, you can get in trouble in Paris, but that what I'm studying to learn because it such a dieing bread of sewing.
