  • I don't know if you ever heard of Cousin Clem during those days. His wife and two daughters were murdered on February 6, 1973. They played several times in Nashville on Printer's Alley as well as a couple times on the Opry as well as with Buck Owens and Roy Clark. I was Cousinn Clem for twenty seven years. He was a great man, Lots of great fun.

  • String, you need a belt to hold them britches up.

  • Notice the way Jake Tullock absolutely NAILS it on bass fiddle right at the start...and keeps the precision throughout the whole song. Every one of these guys were SUPER-PICKERS!

  • today was the day that evil crept into the lives of Stringbean and Estelle and they were senslessly taken from us, at an all-too-early age. please take a moment and say a prayer for all things Stringbean.

  • Why the heck would you take the trouble to find this video then dislike it? It's not like this is popular music with a lot of traffic... Too bad.

  • i always find it so funny how he plays with one hand off the banjo making a gesture

  • who the heck dislikes this??

  • Ole Strang could get it boy.

  • Always been a fan of String. Did not know until recently that he was the originator of Saggy Pants. This tidbit may not be welcome in some arenas!

  • Strings murderer was just denied parole again today. He will be eligible again in 2014. His sentence was 198 years. Got a few to go yet before release.

  • There was no bean as green as string!

  • the truth is im a metalhead who has always listened to death metal and old school thrash metal .... ive also been playing guitar for about 13 years now and when i heard stringbean i automatically loved the guy he can fucking play awsome..... when u actually play guitar u have even more appreciation and understanding of how much skill he actually has now i find myself listening to him everyday pretty much, i can have tattooes and long metal hair and wear metal shirts everyday and still love this!

  • PETA would throw a fit nowa days

  • No, hubsack, the Brown cousins killed him; they were not related to him.

  • Hmmm! I think it was his cousins that killed him.

  • think i'll put this on loop and listen to it for about a month......

  • so Stringbean started the style of saggin pants??? talk about messin with your head...

  • @mspdrummer at least his boxers arent showing.

  • @mspdrummer I was thinking the exact same thing...LOL He came walkin' out there with those low pants and I cracked up!!!!!!

  • I think string was molested at a young age hahah

  • WOW! You sure can tell Stringbean comes from a Vaudeville background! :-)

  • i gonna get me a rabbit hehehe!

  • Run, little rabbit, run!!!!, COME AT YOU WITH A BIG SHOTGUN AND KEEEL YOU!

  • my dad used to play this song for us when we were little ...especially if we were crying

  • that man was saggin before saggin was a "thang" :-D Love this stuff!!!!

  • String taught me how to play the old time style of banjo. I don't do a performance that I don't think of String. He was a classic. I sure miss him.

  • @ArkRed1 At least you got to be taught by him. I have to just watch and figger him out. =o(

  • string bean taught them boys something..... great music.

  • If Stringbean fingerpicked instead of frailing he would have not have had to wear that getup

  • Comment removed

  • RiP man, damn shame.

  • Strinbean was da best

  • Stringbean was my great grandma Ruby Mills Cooks half brother. the man could play no matter what anybody says. and goddamn he looks just her. i love that i share the same bloodline as this musician. he was a great an how he died was messed up but he will always be remembered as a great musician and comedian. Long live David Akeman. We love you Unc.

  • @hom859 ...and to think I have a distant cousin who was Vice President....Dick Chaney... Yeeech.

Well, at least I have Lucille Ball and Don Knotts in the mix. R.I.P. to all!

  • @hom859 awesome comment. StringBean was great as great can be

  • @hom859 All that and you just had to top it off and use the Lords name in Vein. Absolutely uncalled for, if you ever wanna see String again you better get down on your knees and pray. Talking like that isn't gonna help.

  • @bigmrclean i don't quite believe what u believe buddy. i will talk the way i want

  • @hom859 Caught the news that his parole was denied again. All is well. Do try to catch any news that keeps his memory and talent alive. Stringbean was my second cousin. As well proud to be of his blood and distant family line.

  • @hom859 how did he die

  • @titan2010able1 him and his wife were murdered

  • @hom859 He was one of the funniest on Hee Haw back when......String Bean started the low pants-line look...a pioneer in many ways....with a big heart.

  • @hom859 I always thought he was a great musician. I love that clawhammer banjo.

  • @hom859 he was murdered wasn't he! I was in school at vandy and remember--it was unreal how horrendous that happened...my sympathies

  • @constancelena yea he was murdered him and his wife by some guys tryin to rob him. It happened before I was born I never knew him he's my great-uncle but my mom use to tell me the stories. He was a good man and his wife was a good woman. They will never be forgotten.

  • @hom859 my parents were country music fans, I was in a training program @ vandy--july 73 thru to june 74 -I saw you great--uncle, Marty Robbins, Minnie Pearl...so many I forget...It truly was a wonderful musical experience but I felt the Ryman was a death trap--I worried about fires--spent every time we went looking at exits. not at the Ryman but saw Jimmy Buffett as he was just getting started, Linda Ronstadt...it has gown huge now but those sleepy old days made some good memories

  • guy is flyin'.....

  • great song

  • yahoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • haha he had the sagin pants befor it was in style haha

  • Ozzyslasher didn't say "Stringbean" died in jail, he was obviously referring to the pair of cousins who murdered Stringbean and Estelle because they believed the two had a large amount of cash. It looks like he's expressing his anger @ the murder in hoping the murderers rot in jail. Maybe don't jump all over everybody all the time, either of you, any of you. Be a little gentler toward one another & the world couldl be a nicer place.

  • he did not die in prison, he was murdered by robbers on his farm. please cut the self righteous pontificating.....

  • @www071510 Oops. You misunderstood ozzyslasher1970's post. It's ok, though. No one is perfect.

  • String taught me how to play the old style of frailing the banjo. I carved him a crook stem pipe, and was going to take it to him, but then a friend called and said String and Estelle had been killed. I took the pipe to my bench grinder and turned it into dust. Sure wish I could have given it to him. I sure miss him everytime I sing a String song.

  • @ArkRed1 Are you from Arkansas?

  • Wish the Hee Haw people had given Stringbean a spot like this every week. Sure would have bet the heck out of that "Pickin' and Grinnin'" stuff.

  • any know anything about his styl e of playing? it seems different than others ive seen...

  • @arlichar11 It's called frailing, or clawhammer style. I don't know which version he was using. There are several varieties of frailing.

Modern bluegrass uses Scruggs style picking or a variation on that. It's a different method to get the same excitement from the banjo.

  • @arlichar11 like Hikko said it is frailing or clawhammer. and everyone you look up will tell you a slightly different way to play that style "correctly". i say play however feels right. i play this style, 2 finger and 3 finger picking styles also. they all have unique sounds and also up and down sides, but frailing is by far the oldest and most unique. you can do alot with it and its easy to get started playing this style, as opposed to learning several different rolls.

  • That there is what the world needs to resort back to.

  • lol...he had the low pants looong before the kids of today picked up that fad!

  • Run little rabbit run! Gotta love it---ha! Love the hat-turning trick to---ha!

  • This guy is absolutely awesome! Entertainment doesn't come this way anymore!

  • Skeet Skeet Skoo Skoo! get's em!

  • Best banjo player ever! Love ole timey music.

  • Nice to see Stringbean in his prime.

  • I now intend to learn the banjo

  • String fucking bean!!!!

  • Oh wow, this would go great with a parody video, i can just see it lol

  • Brilliant posting.

  • Try listening to this video!

  • @theFranksandtheBean...I swear to god I was thinking this dude was Les Claypool in black & white days.

  • does anyone know where i can get the lyrics to this song?

  • Is that claypool's grandpa?

  • THIS GUY MADE UP GANGSTER MUSIC~!@!@#@~!#%@#$@%!

  • back when music was fun and not done for pure money

  • @cornman98 now these days, it's all done in the name of corporate greed. hell, it's hardly even music these days.

  • @cornman98 this was definitely done for money

  • @cornman98 pure money... that a paradox isn't it?

  • Old String is playing a diamond inlaid, and gold banjo for our Lord Jesus, Christ in Paradise, and he is giving our beloved Lord, as much ear candy, as he did us mortals here on earth. God Bless String and his wife, and he'll forever be missed. I love String, and miss him dearly....God rest his and his wife's soul.....run Lil rabbit run........

  • Short legs on Stringbean means he never runs from a fight. Rappers and their pants who really cares what it means, their all meaningless anyway.

  • So.... That's where the saggin' pants idea come from!

  • i love this style of banjo and guitar, very fast, it's uplifting, and motivating, just great music, by the best of the best.......God rest the souls of these gentlemen...

  • What a world that we live in, where a fellow like Stringbean can be murdered in his own home while other scumbags continue to thrive.

  • @sartainja Isn't that the truth though ?

  • stringbean . i havent seen him since heehaw. looking at his costume i wonder if rappers got their pants idea from stringbean. he sure was a great banjo player and sure God is listening to bluegrass.

  • @daleallen45251 - Nope. Rappers got their idea from the rent boys in prison who'd wear their trousers unbuttoned in front to advertise they were "available." It's a bit backwards and a lot of them don't realise that's where it comes from so the next time you see a kid wearing his trousers hanging off his rear, he's emulating men selling themselves to other men for sex in prison.

  • what a duet. R.I.P. Stringbean

  • stringbean is one of my idols

  • How's this related to the Finnish thrash metal band Kodittomat? I dislike this, sorry to all you fans.

  • Take a look at StringBeans pants.... this was way back in the early 60's. If you think about it... ole String Bean started wearing the droopy drawer britches a long time before anyone else did! lol

  • Drop thumbing like that, wow he can clawhammer like crazy.

  • I wonder if Strang got them pants from Little Jimmy Dickens? LOL

  • This is the first time I ever heard of "Stringbean" or this song. I just read about his death how horrible, really sounded talented, I'll look for some more stuff by him now, makes me wanna hang up my banjo, after hearing pickin' like that.

  • String Bean the orginal gangsta

  • what a great banjo player. very simple man,

  • RIP STRINGBEAN!

  • What a shame that this man was such a great picker and a comic. R.I.P. String

  • I hope his murders burn for everytime in hell RIP Stringbean

  • Sorry, I meant to say thirty-seven years...

  • I can't believe that David and Estelle Akeman have been gone for twenty-seven years, anymore than I could understand way back then that those ignorant cockroaches would kill those two quiet unassuming people for a chainsaw and some other odds and ends.

String, we barely knew you, keep clawhammering in the angel band, DW

  • what a great banjo player he was hope his cozents in jail regreat what thay did. i heard one died in prison?! hope he made his peace or he will be hot and thersty in hell cause even the devil is pissed at them. shovel that cole maggots, faster faster shovel.eturnity is a long time to spend on the cole pile in hell

  • "Lets Go Rabbit Huntin .. Hang On Chilld'n !!" Stringbean at his very best.

  • I love how the song playing keeps pace with the frame clock. Stringbean was the master of the claw hammer technique.

  • I've just discovered the String !!!!!

What a total dude - are there any more like him around today?

Pray tell - I have caught the bug and must find more like him.

  • Pretty neat to see 2 of Bill Monroe's banjo players on the same stage together.

  • if im not mistaken and i could be , but i believe that shug fisher did the voice of unlce pete , he also played shorty kellems of the beverly hillbillies
