I don't know if you ever heard of Cousin Clem during those days. His wife and two daughters were murdered on February 6, 1973. They played several times in Nashville on Printer's Alley as well as a couple times on the Opry as well as with Buck Owens and Roy Clark. I was Cousinn Clem for twenty seven years. He was a great man, Lots of great fun.
Notice the way Jake Tullock absolutely NAILS it on bass fiddle right at the start...and keeps the precision throughout the whole song. Every one of these guys were SUPER-PICKERS!
today was the day that evil crept into the lives of Stringbean and Estelle and they were senslessly taken from us, at an all-too-early age. please take a moment and say a prayer for all things Stringbean.
Strings murderer was just denied parole again today. He will be eligible again in 2014. His sentence was 198 years. Got a few to go yet before release.
the truth is im a metalhead who has always listened to death metal and old school thrash metal .... ive also been playing guitar for about 13 years now and when i heard stringbean i automatically loved the guy he can fucking play awsome..... when u actually play guitar u have even more appreciation and understanding of how much skill he actually has now i find myself listening to him everyday pretty much, i can have tattooes and long metal hair and wear metal shirts everyday and still love this!
Stringbean was my great grandma Ruby Mills Cooks half brother. the man could play no matter what anybody says. and goddamn he looks just her. i love that i share the same bloodline as this musician. he was a great an how he died was messed up but he will always be remembered as a great musician and comedian. Long live David Akeman. We love you Unc.
@hom859 All that and you just had to top it off and use the Lords name in Vein. Absolutely uncalled for, if you ever wanna see String again you better get down on your knees and pray. Talking like that isn't gonna help.
@hom859 Caught the news that his parole was denied again. All is well. Do try to catch any news that keeps his memory and talent alive. Stringbean was my second cousin. As well proud to be of his blood and distant family line.
@hom859 He was one of the funniest on Hee Haw back when......String Bean started the low pants-line look...a pioneer in many ways....with a big heart.
@constancelena yea he was murdered him and his wife by some guys tryin to rob him. It happened before I was born I never knew him he's my great-uncle but my mom use to tell me the stories. He was a good man and his wife was a good woman. They will never be forgotten.
@hom859 my parents were country music fans, I was in a training program @ vandy--july 73 thru to june 74 -I saw you great--uncle, Marty Robbins, Minnie Pearl...so many I forget...It truly was a wonderful musical experience but I felt the Ryman was a death trap--I worried about fires--spent every time we went looking at exits. not at the Ryman but saw Jimmy Buffett as he was just getting started, Linda Ronstadt...it has gown huge now but those sleepy old days made some good memories
Ozzyslasher didn't say "Stringbean" died in jail, he was obviously referring to the pair of cousins who murdered Stringbean and Estelle because they believed the two had a large amount of cash. It looks like he's expressing his anger @ the murder in hoping the murderers rot in jail. Maybe don't jump all over everybody all the time, either of you, any of you. Be a little gentler toward one another & the world couldl be a nicer place.
String taught me how to play the old style of frailing the banjo. I carved him a crook stem pipe, and was going to take it to him, but then a friend called and said String and Estelle had been killed. I took the pipe to my bench grinder and turned it into dust. Sure wish I could have given it to him. I sure miss him everytime I sing a String song.
@arlichar11 like Hikko said it is frailing or clawhammer. and everyone you look up will tell you a slightly different way to play that style "correctly". i say play however feels right. i play this style, 2 finger and 3 finger picking styles also. they all have unique sounds and also up and down sides, but frailing is by far the oldest and most unique. you can do alot with it and its easy to get started playing this style, as opposed to learning several different rolls.
Old String is playing a diamond inlaid, and gold banjo for our Lord Jesus, Christ in Paradise, and he is giving our beloved Lord, as much ear candy, as he did us mortals here on earth. stringbean . i havent seen him since heehaw. looking at his costume i wonder if rappers got their pants idea from stringbean. he sure was a great banjo player and sure God is listening to bluegrass.
@daleallen45251 - Nope. Rappers got their idea from the rent boys in prison who'd wear their trousers unbuttoned in front to advertise they were "available." It's a bit backwards and a lot of them don't realise that's where it comes from so the next time you see a kid wearing his trousers hanging off his rear, he's emulating men selling themselves to other men for sex in prison.
Take a look at StringBeans pants.... this was way back in the early 60's. If you think about it... ole String Bean started wearing the droopy drawer britches a long time before anyone else did! lol
This is the first time I ever heard of "Stringbean" or this song. I just read about his death how horrible, really sounded talented, I'll look for some more stuff by him now, makes me wanna hang up my banjo, after hearing pickin' like that.

arlichar11 1 year ago
@arlichar11 It's called frailing, or clawhammer style. I don't know which version he was using. There are several varieties of frailing.
Modern bluegrass uses Scruggs style picking or a variation on that. It's a different method to get the same excitement from the banjo.
Hikikomori013 1 year ago
@arlichar11 like Hikko said it is frailing or clawhammer. and everyone you look up will tell you a slightly different way to play that style "correctly". i say play however feels right. i play this style, 2 finger and 3 finger picking styles also. they all have unique sounds and also up and down sides, but frailing is by far the oldest and most unique. you can do alot with it and its easy to get started playing this style, as opposed to learning several different rolls.
