  • Does anyone know where this took place?

  • Man oh man... this is my all-time favourite piece of music, the best live thing I've ever seen. This is a rare piece of footage indeed - it doesn't exist on DVD; not this exact performance anyway. Any chance you could could re-record this in a higher resolution, WITH the applause? Huh? Please?

  • @Grigor437 That's actually on my list of things to do, hopefully when I have some spare time later in the summer. It would certainly be nice to do a copy without the letterboxing and in stereo, which couldn't be done at the time of the original uploads.

  • @SpiritOfSolace Ah! This is indeed good to hear. The sound is pretty good for mono, and the letterboxing never bothered me, it was only the abrupt edit at the end that kind of flattened it. We all look forward to seeing MORE!

  • I hope so!!

  • I like it!

  • I want to be laid to rest by this piece of music.

  • @palaver2034 - its be a fairly lively burial me thinks :)

  • i like the emotion these guys play with

  • Genialna muzyka.

  • @rhumbaphone You are a fool. To take music lessons does not make you any more qualified to appreciate music than a layman. To compare Bernstein to the great composers is foolishness - he was known for his conducting more than he was for his compositions. Because you think this is "crap" does not mean that it is. Nyman has been doing this his entire life and he would not say it is "crap".

  • @CptSchmidt i'm afraid it does. and as for bernstein, more people have heard his music and performed his writing than have seen him conduct, so... now, as for leaving my bias at the door. don't sweat it. i would never, ever bring this junk up with my students. there are far too many amazing geniuses to teach as great examples. I bring this guy up in a lesson as often as i bring up kenny g in a jazz lesson. (never) to make things clear, i don't dislike all of his work, but this one, i dislike.

  • @rhumbaphone According to your website you are a "music educator". I sure hope that you do not "teach" according to your own biases. This is not "crap". An educator would be able to appreciate this for what it is and would not be so quick to judge or call people a "douche" for liking something they don't. I don't like Baroque, but that doesn't mean I think it's crap or that people who DO like it are douches... What a closed, crass and bigoted guy you must be.

  • I danced to this music with my gymnastic team last year.

This music very good for dance!

    Réka, Hungary

  • Wonderful! Thank you!

  • 3 dislikes????

  • Bellissimo e trascinante come in un gorgo ma ricco di riflessi iridescenti.

  • ughhhh i love it

  • wow, this guy has written some really good shit music

  • No doubt eh!? He apparently likes Metallica. His music reminds me of baroque for drunken sailors with one leg shorter than the other.

  • maravilloso,sin duda alguna

  • Wow this is amazing. This song reminds me of Paolo Conte a lot.

  • imagine hearing this live!!!

    bravo

    douglas

  • Impresionante. Esto es ritmo y lo demás es tontería

  • MONUMENTAL!!!

  • any idea when this performance was?

  • i'd appreciate any information: does anybody know how many movements are there to this work? have they all been recorded on the same album?

  • There are 8 movements. Three of which appear on "The Kiss & Other Movements" CD (stroking, gliding, and synchronizing). There is also a transcription for four hands that was recorded. I am not sure if all of the movements have ever appeared on the same disc. Cheers!

  • This is a fantastic composer. I used to HATE his stuff then went to see him play live at the Sage, Gateshead with my partner (who loves Nyman) and I was transfixed throughout. Seen him perform 5 times now and we're lucky enough to be seeing him play at the BBC Proms (as Johnjy2 mentions). Plus, he's a really nice guy... Makes you sick doesn't it!?! lol

  • i think they could do with a proper double bassist instead of an electric bass

  • yes but know one cares what you think.

  • Just heard this on classic fm... got my toes tapping!! amazed at the tremendous pace but was a bit disappointed by the ending... thoguht it was a bit anti-climactic and could have done with somethign a little more spectacular!

  • It's part of a larger piece that Nyman has never re-recorded in full since he recorded it for the 30min. film "Water Dances". It's probably 25 minutes in full. The best version is the 11 min. recording on "The Essential Michael Nyman Band". An earlier recording is on "The Kiss". There are a few other CDs with isolated movements. Strangely, the film itself is only available in Japan.

Now that Nyman is re-recording his entire catalog for his own music label, let's hope he gets to this.

  • is this same as the 11 min one from i tunes?

  • Remarkable! I think they did the music for the movie Man on Wire. They are amazing.

  • Does anyone know if the band still tours? There is no higher level of precision anywhere in the music world. Every member of this group is pure genius.

  • Yes, they are coming to Russia in a week.

  • Well that does me no good as I live in Alaska. At least I can see Russia from my house! Do they ever come to the states? I won't travel abroad until Bush is out of office.

  • not sure if its any help, but they are playing at the bbc proms in august at the royal albert hall in london

  • I didn't know Harry Potter could play violin!?

  • Fucking genius, seeing The Michael Nyman Band play live is something every music fan should experience. The only show that my wife has ever been brought to tears by- and she is one cold bitch.

  • LOL! I think this is in the running for the greatest YT vomment of all time!!

  • @flakturm99 it´s great that you appreciate the music, but it´s sad that you refer to your wife as a bitch.

  • @flakturm99

Last sentence - LMAO - although it isn't funny for you !
