I suggested to a hipster type at a party yesterday, in a druken state, that they should play this song here, they said they knew it and proceeded to not play it, and make a mockery of it - suggesting bums are filthy people and the such. No respect. And I swear the vodka was no vodka at all, but rubbing alcohol. Was indeed. Oh well. Left in time, home owner went mad and started yelling at everyone - swearing they were government agents. Oh well. Point being hipsters are yucky.
Good grief, I thought this was something we kids made up after singing the church hymns, didn't even know anyone else in the world knew it. Is there anything that isn't online anymore? Funny experience, hearing this and singing along again. Thanks for the giggle.
I have this record, but it has a piece broken off, so I'd never hear the entire song before. Thanks for putting it on youtube............... jldubya1939
@BrotherOrchid Sorry, bud, but Rupert Murdoch having to line his swimming pool with silver instead of gold is hardly poverty.
Of course, all jabbing aside, the real problem is a lack of choice in America. Both parties are out to wholesale fuck the middle class. Among other things.
This song is very appropriate today. "How can I work when there is no work to do?" I listened to this and other Harry McCluintock songs on my grandparents VICTROLA in 1931 to 1934 or so. In those days my grand mother always kept something in the ice-box for the HOBOS when they came by asking to hoe weeds or do some other work for some thing to eat.
They never had any work to be done but they always had food for them.
That's when I first learned my politics. THANKS FOR BRING IT BACK!!
Wow ... I recall my dad singing this, well the chorus at least, when I was a kid. I'm now 53 and this is the first time I have ever heard the actual song.
Just curious but this tune sounds alot like a sunday school song we used to sing but the words are changed.Like hallelujah praise the lord.I love this one way better.Anybody remember that song?Or am i thinking of something else?
Jim Hill's Line Was The Great northern Railroad which stretched across the Pacific Northwest. Many a hobo road this line, but not on passenger trains.
Yeah my grandmother used to sing this to all of us a lot. I told her about finding this song online, and she's excited to hear it next time I come visit her in the nursing home. A song from a completely different time. hard to wrap your mind around that is.
(Chorus) I went to a house And I asked for some bread And the lady says "bum, bum, the baker's dead (Chorus) Why don't you work Like other men do Now, how can I work When there's no work to do (Chorus) Why don't you save All the money you earn If I didn't eat I'd have money to burn (Chorus) I don't like work And work don't like me And that's the reason I am so hungry

Gosh this brings back so many memories. Dad used to sing this song to us kids when we were very young. Usually when we went on a long ride, like to our Gramma's in Meadville, Pa. Well I am now 55 and he is 95 and I just played it to him. What a treat for him!! Can't wait to send it to my "Sis" overseas. Thanks for the memories.
... why would he say "hallelujah" after he finds out that the baker is dead? i find that quite rude, but a good song nonetheless.
