  • this is very cool

  • is the burner just wired to plug in to an outlet?

  • Can you show us how to make it

  • How bad does your electric usage go up with a run on this?

  • I just can't find refractory cement where I live :(

  • I've never heard any American pronounce it 'al-you-min-ee-um' or spell it aluminium. Dictionary spells it 'aluminum' & gives pronunciation as 'uh-loo-muh-num'.

-Also, is it really a good idea to have a pot of molten aluminum right in front of stairs?

  • @1mooster1 Aluminum and aluminium and both correct spellings and usages. I used to think aluminium was a misuse myself but it depends on a person's form of English as to (British or North American). Dictionarydotcom has both listed.

  • Would this melt copper? I would really love to melt copper for some things i need to do.

    Thank you, happy new year.

    Regards.

  • Is it legal in singapore

  • @dimomarg I was just joking lol

  • Enjoyed watching a electric furnace. Would have like to seen what the hell you did with all that melt. Not to be a bitch but you should at least wear welding gloves and face protection while heating metal to burn your skin to the bone temps.

  • It's actually dangerous to melt aluminum cos if it contain oxygen , each pound of molten aluminum = three sticks of dynamite so if u want to blow up ur neighbors home jus pump O2 in aluminum and throw it at ur neighbors house lol

  • @njx8 that didn't make any sense. at all.

  • @njx8 well, that's what the boosters on the shuttle were fuelled with.

  • Why do we all pronounce aluminium like aloominum? Theres an extra i in there that i guess we all forgot about... Sorry little fella.

  • @shortymiget52 In Australia we pronounce it properly :P

  • @Dalemoooooon

    poor little I.

  • @Dalemoooooon Hahaha, downunder, it's miss-spelled ;)

  • Awesome setup, I might try one myself.

quick question though, how long has your frunace been on before you started taping this shot.

in other words, how long does your 1200 watt CalRod take to get to aluminium melting temperatures?

  • where did you get your refractory

  • My apologies I thought this was a response to wtc argument video.

  • Comment removed

  • i could play with that for hours.... xD

  • I want to pour aluminum into different molds to with melted pop cans. How could I make this happen?

  • This video should be called "How to make a rich soup of aluminum" XD

  • lol it would suck if you droped your camera in it but if you saved the footage of it submerged it woulda been cool 8P

  • you should make a mask and put it as a give away

  • How many C°?

  • do you use the unexpanded, or expanded perlite? I mean it obviously looks stable with your setup, but I have never tried this way

  • oh ok

Black Magic. the rest of yuu are fukin crazy

  • @PixelPi Could you do this again at night? I kind of want to see the glow better.

  • @dogassedugly if you dry the aluminum cans or shred them and leave them out in the sun to dry, you should have no explosions. anything can have moisture on it. its not right to discourage other from a problem when there's an easy solution. think outside the box

  • @dogassedugly if you shred or dry the aluminum cans you can easily get away with melting them down

  • Can't i just use a blowtorch?

  • this is really REALLY cool. dont need to spend hours gathering and preparing wood, just plug it in!

  • I have an idea...

  • I just built one like this with my son. Our clay pot cracked upon startup. Looks like you had this happen as well. How large is your clay pot? Have you been able to get around this somehow?

  • thyssenKrupp mini

  • Wouldnt do anything like this myself, aluminum fumes are VERY poisonous.

  • @Metals999 im not dead yet.

  • what is that kind of... c***p you remove from the aluminium... and i want a tutorial for the furnace =)

  • Sim e muito bom quem quiser está resistencia eu tenho.

  • how do you pour??

  • how many volt & watts heaters are you using and what kind of metal cups used as melting tank ?.

  • @waheedsat im not him but im prety sure its running off of 240 volts, 1200 watts.

  • I melt mine in a bucket over a bonfire...the ol' fashioned way :-)

  • Dear Santa. . . .

  • does clay work best on resisting the melted aluminum?

  • i wonder what happens if u fondue meat in it :p

    spontaneous combustion prob :D

  • @nephildevil

I wonder what will happen if you put a finger in thereXD

  • hmm k, looks like fun, i guess :|

  • How do you pour the aluminum? Does the crucible come out or do you tip the flower pot?

  • looks spicy.

  • is it hot :P

  • I'm gonna do that that's awesome

  • Would this method also work with other metals used for figure, radnium- (sp?) and/or lead-based? Also, do you have the plans for making this forge? I'm a model builder, here.

  • i, curious why anyone would need to do this. i mean, are these people just doing it to play with molten metal or are they machinists or what?

  • @slovakmath lots of people use it to build little model steam engine or alike diecast model of toys like a semi truck and so on.

it is an art to get a good result

  • @slovakmath Make custom brackets for hot rods, motorcycles, gunsmithing, hobbies or whatever.

  • Why did you scoop off the white stuff? What was that?

  • @VCat2006 its just dust or other impureitys it floats to the top when almost any metal melts.

  • you can dry soda cans out if you have an oven you can use that say your wife won't get pissed because your using her oven as a dryer lol. don't leave them in too long as long as you have renced them out and emptied them at 200 deg in a standard oven foe about 40 seconds will dry them out pritty good and with no damage to the oven

  • you can dry soda cans out if you have an oven you can use that say your wife won't get pissed because your using her oven as a dryer lol. don't leave them in too long as long as you have rinced them out and emptied them at 200 deg in a standard oven foe about 40 seconds will dry them out pritty good and with no damage to the oven

  • @cokledudledu tin foil is 100% aluminum

  • @AlphaMaleRyan Don't you mean (LOL Haha) "Aluminium foil" is 100% aluminium? (I would think "Tin" foil is tin!! LMFAO!!)

  • @EddieGoregor lol yeah, but sometimes it is called tin foil instead of aluminum foil, so i thought maybe he uses "tin foil" so he dident know it was aluminum

  • @AlphaMaleRyan I'm glad you laughed anyhow. I'm just snoopin around trying to experiment a bit and am trying to find a retail supplier for refractory and forging supplies. Know of any in NJ? If i have to I'll order online, but I really hate doing things thru the mail needlessly. I like to "go get it when I need it". Right now I want to forge/cast a die mold out of Al or Brass. Al will probably be strong enough but there are intricate details in the design that need to be copied & xferred over.

  • @EddieGoregor yeah, sorry dude im not an expert on any of this stuff, but you could just make a flame forge out of a large bucket. for a crucible you could use a flower pot

  • @EddieGoregor tin foil is aluminium they just call it tin so it sounds better

  • I melted aluminium in an open fire in our kitchen when i was a kid...even dropped a hot ingot of it into a bucket of water... it instanly boiled lol

  • what are you using to power it by the way? or is it just mains? and can it melt anything else than just aluminium? (e.g. copper or brass)

  • does your breaker ever trip?

  • put your hand on it :)

  • Hi dear friends, how can I make one this?, I want to melt Zamak for some molds, please help me.

  • *dr.evil* put the aluminum rod in the "liquid hot Mag-ma"

  • thats acctualy realy cool i wish i could one :)

  • Quit playing with it and put the lid back on. LOL

  • wow... that was... interesting yet a pretty good video :)

  • terminator 2 - ill be back !

  • hey nice one :) could be handy don't seem to hard to make too.

  • quick...

  • what kind of concrete is that

  • I know. I liked the way you built your foundry.

  • W00T so cool :DDDDDD

  • Cool

  • @MrLeonard55 COOL??? Its very HOT! Its Molten Aluminium.

  • its beautiful to see

  • Chew up your power bill much? Anyways very cool setup.

  • @YTBYlover 1200W = a little more then 10 cents an hour of use. If he left it on 12 hours a day every day for a month it would make his bill go up about 30-40$ but im sure he doesnt run it that long or even every day. So my guess is no?

  • @obeyance Hey thats pretty cool.

  • But how do you pour it from this device ??

  • why would one need to do this at home?

  • @mannhorn34

obviously is gonna make bombs or drugs with it :D

  • What are you skimming out at 1:30. Is that aluminium oxide???

  • @AV3NG3R00 I would like to know this as well. Im sure its impurities but, what kind? AND is this common and/or nessisary?

  • and you do this next to a wood ??? :S

  • you made lava!!!!!

  • don't breathe that shit- that stuff gets to your brain

  • @jiminiflix Next phase of drug use, Molten metal Gas Huffing, Its hardcore.

  • yes they work very well but wat ever u do dont let it get to hot melt a batch and turn it off and let it cool i let mine get to hot and it melted the coil but i used it for like 5 hours at a time when it did tat

  • What is the point of melting aluminum?

  • I'll be back!

  • That's one cool furnace you've made their and works well too :-)

  • i made one like this wit a 750 watt coil from a $10 hot plate workes greate

  • @stallsworth44 hey did that work well? saw some hotplates on sale at the store maybe ill pick one up instead of charcoal

  • also is the lid really necassary for the ceramic cup? because i am having trouble finding that item.

  • what is the power source for your melter it isn't shown in your slideshow?

  • @m3952ike just a power coard u just wire it to a coard and plug it in to the wall

  • That was very smart to use the clay pots. It makes a handy crucible.

  • I finished my foundry three days ago and successfully casted my first copper ingot. Go see the video, I guess, you might like it :)

  • You dont get the crucible out

do you see the frame? its on it is only connected with two bolts that means you can tip the aluminium out.

  • Why melt aluminun?

  • How else would you dip your fruit in it?

  • how do you get the crucible out?

  • I can't believe that you can melt aluminum with electric heating elements of just 1.2 KW.

  • Have you ever left a hunk of aluminum on the stove-top with the burner on high? Back in the 70s Matel sold a toy called "creepy crawlers" where you cast rubber items that were a lot like fishing lures. It came with a little cooker for heat source. I just put one on the stove on high.. I think I've melted an aluminum pan before also. DONT TRY THIS AT HOME.. it will stink you outta the house.

  • i don't think you melted aluminum on the stove. maybe lead. aluminum has a melting point of 660C. that is faint red heat.

  • hey this is adressed to anyone that can answer but instead of a calrod can i just use the heating element from an old oven that has the same wattage?

  • probobly but they are a bit to big,try useing one from a stovetop burner

  • do you think i could just cut it in half need be?

  • how do you pour?

  • How are you heating it?

  • Hi i would like to build one like this how could i do it?

  • Why does every one want to de dross the Al over and over again? Leave the dross on until ready to pour. Your Al recovery will be much higher. In Al systems everytime you remove the dross cover (Al2O3) new dross will form. Molten Al is self-sealing and you shouldn't monkey with the melt until ready to pour.

  • @cr7c3 If you melt scrap that contains any steel, you definitely want to get the steel out

  • you are loosing aluminium because of the heat loll hehe dont go to much after 800 degres or you will end up with to much ashes just saying loll and nice freaking melting pot loll

  • Think that you have enough of pop cans then x3 that much and you got enough.

  • How do you cast from your crucible to make use of the aluminum?

Your furnace design is nice but I can't figure out how you would decant the melted aluminum.

And speaking of design how does the "Calrod" work is the heating caused by electrical resistance?

  • How many pop cans can you melt in 1 of those crucibles?

  • a lot.

a single 335 ml can is made of very little alluminum.

I didn't make this device nor know the volume of the crucible used here but I would guess at least 10 cans.

  • More than that. I have a similar crucible, less sophisticated, It took me 32 to equal a hand mold for my 8 year old daughter. Your right, pop cans-ehh- Beer cans don't amount to much.

  • Is electric cheaper than propane?

  • Much

  • I am not being a smart ass, I am legitimately curious--why?

I've never known aluminum to be used much in metallurgy or metal craft and have not heard of it being used in jewelery production.

Is this just for the sake of melting aluminum? What do you do with it?

  • In the past, I have made robot parts from a process like this. I am sure there are many other practical applications though.

  • cast metal parts? i mean who makes jewelry with casting anyways

  • Are you referring to me?

Casting and jewelery? Have you ever worn a ring before?

  • I wanna put my leftover aluminum foil in it!

  • Do you know what is the maximun temperature of your foundry, more or less? Or Have you traid melt an other metals?

  • serioulsy.. who are you.

  • Have you had one burn out on you yet? I had an element melt inside the cement. Do you control the temperature? If so, how? Thanks!

  • yes definitely weponsdiy1is right I would love to see how to make that.

  • u should make a how to make that (it would get u yones of subscribers

  • @weponsdiy1 he should i would love to kno how he made that

  • I ENVY YOU SSSOOOOOOOO MUCH.

    5 stars for pure awesomeness.

and you can melt soda cans with this right?

  • pretty sweet furnace can u make me one if you live in nsw ausrtralia

  • thats like fucking lava!!!

  • nah rocks melt around 2000F

tho quartz rocks have a lower melting point and could be melted into lava.

  • Imo this is best i have seen on youtube and if possible, could yu please share with me your method via pm of do you have a drawing of the design ?

  • NICE! I want to build one now...

  • jeez that aluminum melted like ice in boiling water

  • @CrazeexGood Probably very close to pure aluminum, it looked like a store bought pipe that was unused. No impurities to have to heat up.

  • how do you poor it in to a mold? please reply? ps sorry cant spel

  • i noticed there is a hinge and a handle at the pot. So I think just tilt the pot to pour. But there might be a proper funnel of something to guide the molten metal.

  • aaa yer properly

  • inside his furnace(were u see the molten aluminum) is sorta something like a cup. he gets tongs and picks it up and pretty much pours it into a mold

  • what kind of mold would one use after melting the ammount of metal needed?

  • how many times did you burn your fingers doing that?

  • How do you strengthen the aluminum after it is melted?

A reply would be greatly appreciated.

  • I can't fully understand your question. The aluminum solidifies after some time => so strength. (?)

  • Well is there any way to chemically treat it?

  • You can add other elements -zinc, copper- to make a new alloy, combining different properties into one metal. :)

  • Yeah I knew about that thanks, but I finally found a way that involves motor oil so peace.

  • Haha Terminator 2 was in my minde-ha ha

  • "You could be mine!" lol

  • 1:00 aluminum smoothie

  • that thing melts metal pretty quickly

  • Umm. Gloves anyone? Is it really too much to hope for?

  • Man, that is really cool, i would love to have one at my house.

at 00:48 was it just me or did anyone think of the ending of Terminator 2.
