i know many examples of folks putting "car" speakers in wall, or in ceiling for home theater use. they are completely acceptable, and will always win bang for the buck against the ones branded as "in wall speakers."
be aware the natural frequency response of a car speaker should be a little brighter than that of a normal speaker, as usually they are designed that way.
and i wouldn't worry about this unless you plan on playing your music / movies loudly... -is the impedance / resistance of the speaker in the car is 4 or 8 ohms and many home amplifiers are rated for 8 ohms minimum.
Just check your receiver / amplifier to make sure it can handle the speaker you are using. You will want to run 2 4 ohm speakers in series (google image search "speakers in series" ) to get 8 ohms for your amp if need be. Also remember ......
the series vs parallel only applies to similar frequency speakers. lets assume you have 2 speakers both 4 ohms... if you have 2 full range speakers in series then the impedance doubles to 8 ohms. but if you have a 5" woofer and 1" tweeter in series the amp still sees basically a 4ohm load.
the speaker produces basically a resistance to the electrical energy, which contains varying frequencies. so the 5 inch woofer wont produce any resistance to frequencies used by the tweeter and vice versa
Know most of this stuff but it is indeed inforative, you should alo mention that ALINCO magnet speaker drivers usually have better acoustic properties and are more suited for tube gear than conventional magnet drivers.
or are you referring to the fact that alinco (natural earth magnets) are naturally stronger and handle the "over driven color" that tube gear produces?
I'm a bassist and i'm trying to achieve a vintage 70's bass tone.I've tried to emulate and acquire gear from that era which includes paper woofers and sealed cabinets.Does the sealed/thinner cabinets from that era 'compress' the bass tone coming out of the paper woofers?
To keep it simple (you can always look up more in depth information) -
1. sealed cabinets compress the air inside the cabinet, reducing the resonance and making the bass tighter and crisper. (better and more accurate) the downside to this is less overall bass output than ported / bandbass / transmission line boxes.
2. Thinner cabinets flex under the pressure of an active moving woofer at a certain point. How much is unknown, and depends on the material, thickness, size and power of speaker.
3.Paper is less resilient as a speaker cone material and will potentially color the sound at some point as power is increased. Again, how much depends on various factors.
While my father did play a monster bass, with his left handed Hofner (paul mccartney's model) through a tube powered amp, and I can appreciate the idea of using older gear to produce the color of older sounds, in my opinion you should get the best gear you can get, and easily color it with one of the many effects (stomp) boxes available. That way if you decide to play a modern sound at some point you can just press a button, instead of make a large purchase.
I like the old way of doing things. How long does it take for a woofer to 'break in'? They start off tight and bright but get warmer during the break in period correct??
if playing within the appropriate (not over driven) levels, the speaker should produce the same, accurate sound throughout it's life. I think what your talking about is degradation of the speaker from being over driven and the resulting coloration that occurs before the speaker inevitably fails and has to be sent out for re-coning.
Hey Peter Tony here (DJ Zam) Just subscribed found your vid as a response from one of DJ Tutors vid. Starting to add my 2 cents for DJing too! Stay tuned ;-) Good job !!
hey peter, well done on your videos, a quick question that you might be able to answer for me, what is the correct way to wire up your speakers, in getting the proper ohms and so forth, i have a set of peavy 12" tops, when i use them without bins i usual link them together off one side of my amp as this brings them down to 4ohm...well at least i think so. if you could help it would be great. thanks, eoghan
To test the speaker purely to identify the "polarity" u grab that battery and hook it up i guess. When the membrane moves away from the frame, is that when u have the + side of the battery on the + side of the speaker or its the other way around?
I could answer your question, but it may be different for someone else, as it all depends on the orientation. The orientation of the poles of the magnet, as well as the orientation of the + / - terminals as they relate to the voice coil.
I once built a speaker using 2 oposing voice coils just to see how it worked. ( I was 19) I learned that the magnet is used to create the field that the voice coil uses, so my idea would always be 1/2 as loud as a permanent magnet speaker.
I believe that (dunno too much about speakers) the membrane would move in one direction if u hook it up to a DC source (regardless to the orientation). Can i tell which connector should be hooked up to the + side of the amp based on the direction of the movement?
If not then how can u identify the connectors on the spk if there is no signs?
The main thought here is that you want the sound to be in phase. Meaning don't do + to one speaker and - to another. This isn't so much a big deal with midrange and treble, as the frequency is so small, the ear has a hard time noticing. Bass though, especialy subs, will immediately grow very faint if you run 2 speakers out of phase this way. Best way is to use your ear as the guide. Listen to 1 speaker then plug in the second one, the volume should go up & not down.
I'm learning a great deal tonight. Thank you for taking the time to truly educate....much appreciated!!!!!

@johnhelmes i'll respond to this because it's actually related to the topic, and i regularly use innuendo when i teach to reinforce a concept. so...
the woofer, due to it's large size and it's function, travels far less times per second, yet moves "the farthest".
the little tweeter, (the 15k chap), moves such a small distance, or excursion, that it often can't be seen, or in your reference... felt. :

i am planning on buying new speakers and i was wondering what the difference was between car speakers and other spears. This is for a home theater.
jjaallyay 2 years ago
good question.
the simple answer is there is no difference.
i know many examples of folks putting "car" speakers in wall, or in ceiling for home theater use. they are completely acceptable, and will always win bang for the buck against the ones branded as "in wall speakers."
be aware the natural frequency response of a car speaker should be a little brighter than that of a normal speaker, as usually they are designed that way.
the only other thing to consider -

are you bringing spam to the page?
or are you referring to the fact that alinco (natural earth magnets) are naturally stronger and handle the "over driven color" that tube gear produces?
either way, it's a bit of a tangent.

sounds like some abuse is planned.
