That is a trend that is shown even as far up as the justice system where true justice is sacrificed for the letter of the law and armies of lawyers spend their lives finding loopholes and semantics to free criminals and condemn the innocent. Something is seriously wrong here. Having said that, this was a very good movie on an entirely different level. It is just that this skewed and distorted system was what made the biggest impression on me.

@jerramy It's not all debate.  Policy Debate is a specific style of debate where logical use of enormous amounts of evidence is the norm. There is still Lincoln-Douglas, Classic, etc. Policy is much more than just reading as fast as possible and your remark might come off a little better if it didn't come from a place of ignorance.

The movie didn't even show a rebuttal (the second half) where styles changes significantly. You should research Policy Debate before you critique it.

For a non-American, this is a real shocker to know that debating has been reduced to a time limit where participants talk as quickly as they possibly can to get as much in as possible. It is like a parody of itself. As usual, Americans take the rules and manipulate them as an art rather than following the spirit of the law, which is, to use logical arguments to support their case and refute the others. They don't even care what the subject of debate is, it is the process rather than the idea.

@nirwanaeathell Anna kendrick uses hal to try and get her the national debate title, because she thinks that people with disabilities are smarter. Hal has a speech problem, so she tries to use him for the debate team. He thinks that she really likes him, but he finds out she was just using him. He falls in love with her but wants to get revenge on her for hurting him, so he gets Anna's old partner that she loved as revenge. Thats why its called rocket science; its refering to love.

What I gathered was that the film tried a little to hard to be different and individual but in the end created something something sort of unrealistic that did in fact look like it was trying too hard. Maybe my soft spot is the fact that I'm a debater. :)

@roda2007 Well, as you can see, "Rushmore" is recommended off to the side. I'd say the movie "The Squid and the Whale" has a similar genre, but is much more dark. A classic would be something like "The Graduate"- all great coming of age films.

No wonder Anna Kendrick got that part in Up in the Air - the director must have seen her brutally-smart debating character in Rocket Science and thought "We have to have her in our movie!!!" The characters are so similar, but she plays their cut-throatness and softer sides so well. Bravo, Anna!

I'm pretty sure she didn't "dump" him, they were never dating. Why i think she stopped talking to him was because she knew he couldn't help her get the trophy, which was all she really wanted. I Think! That is just my take.

But anyway, great movie! I think Rocket Science is my new favorite movie.

well it seems that she was trying to sabotage her school because she was practicing with the indian dude even when she was still at the school..(she tried recruiting a bunch of different challenged kids for the team) her goal was always to win the trophy, (remember the beginning?) she stopped talking to him and avoiding him because she was falling for him but she already had a plan in place..as for what she was saying at the end she was just continuing her speech after she stopped talkin to him
