    Fender American 62

Introduced in 1958, the Jazz master guitar was the first Fender instrument to feature an offset-waist body, a rosewood fingerboard, separate lead and rhythm circuits with separate volume and tone controls, a floating bridge and floating/locking tremolo. The American ...

  • kind of a nerdy question...compared to the jaguar it looks like the jazzmaster has room for its 3rd p90style pickup, and the jaguar looks like it barely can fit 2 of those p90 style ones, does that mean the body on the jazzmaster is slight longer? i know the neck is longer than the jaguar neck, but are the bodies the same size?

  • Joe Pass used a Fender Jazzmaster to record 'Sounds of Synanon' and he created some great Jazz recordings with the guitar.

Later (circa 1962) he used a Fender Jaguar to play live on a Jazz show; the show is available on youtube.

Again, Joe sounded as amazing as ever!

So, some legends did use these guitars outside surf, indie, grunge etc.

thanks for the great posts John; keep on playing; peace out.

  • How come some rosewood fretboards are darker than others?? PLEASE ANSWER

  • If my chick and this guitar were falling off a building and i was holding them both i would drop the girl just so i could get a good grip on this guitar...both would be nice though.

  • That's like the joke: Q; If you drop a bowling ball and a banjo and an accordion off the Empire State Building, which one would hit the ground first? A; Who cares!

  • @johnhguitar A:accordion because i would drop it first

  • Could anyone please tell me how to take the tremolo arm off my jaguar (its an american reissue). Thank you

  • Joe pass used either a jaguar or a jazzmaster early in his career. I believe it was a jazzmaster but I'm not 100% sure.

  • what string gauge is that guitar strung with?

  • 10s

  • i played one in guitar center last week and the scale was so big i couldnt even play it

  • Sonic youth uses Jazzmasters..

or Radiohead.. I think Arctic Monkeys.. Their all rock bands

  • @spanishnavax Not to mention Dinosaur Jr and The Cure...

  • how are string bends on this guitar on the high E string? because on mustangs ik that string bends are difficult because the string seems to slip off

  • String bending on these guitars aren't easy because of the bridge design. Most people use strats and teles for that.

However, these guitars definitely have their own sound and quirky personality.

  • @allah211 I'm sorry but that guy offered a terrible answer... his answer was like saying only a vehicle bought with snow tires should drive in the winter.

surf rock, and indie-alternative wouldn't exist if you couldn't bend on these guits.

The vintage bridge is a piece of shit. Again, like buying a vintage car and never driving 'cuz the tires are shit.

A new Jazzy, or a replacement bridge will make for wonderful bends, and a great tone.

this guy doesn't know shit about that guitar.

  • @jazzmasterjesus ok well i accidently realized this review was a jazzmaster and not a jaguar oops 0_0

has anyone played the new "classic player jaguars" yet by fender. they seem very good for the price

  • @allah211 I have a jazzy... and it is ok. to be honest the classic players are 'good' but are a very poor representation of how they should sound. all classic players sound strat'ish.

  • @jazzmasterjesus strats are awesome guitars though! i just dont like strat neck scale length, thanks man!

  • @allah211 raise the action on the bridge for the bottom 3 strings. fixed the problem for me

  • is this guy stoned or something?

  • this guy's stoned...

  • Hi,

Joe Pass used to play one of these, Jag or Jazzmaster. That was before he got his first ES 175.

    I love your reviews BTW!

  • Great tones trough the Cube, wonder how it sounds trough a tube amp :) Great demo

  • kurt cobain, thurston moore and the other guitarist from sonic youth play these. well kurt doesnt cuz hes kinda dead but he did play them

  • I have a Deluxe American Strat, A 62 RI Jaguar, and a Epiphone Swingster. Their all great , but you'll have to pry my Jazzmaster from my cold dead hands.

"You won't part with your's either".

  • @lastkiz13 "jazzmaster" is just a name. why should people play jazz on it just because it's called a jazzmaster?

  • I think Adam Franklin of Swervedriver used this.

  • i think maybe you can fix the tension problem with heavier guage strings?

  • Look over there! what? It's a douche bag with an awesome guitar!

  • You probably know this already, but the Jazzmaster is used quite alot in Alternative Rock, bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Feeder and My Bloody Valentine to name a few

  • Is there a specific guitar that sound better for Alternative/Punk Rock music ?

  • I find it funny that surf music is played on the jazz master more than jazz is.

  • whats the difference between a jaguar and a jazzmaster? can this guitar play heavy distortion riffs? lyk can it do... queens of the stone age and red hot chili peppers.?

  • come on guys! what about sonic youth??!! the youth rocks! j. mascis used one also.

  • well depends on what sound you're going for. an SG is a pretty standard guitar its up there with the strat, les paul, telecaster etc. I'm a strat man myself and i like playing 60s/50s style music (Surf Music, beatles, early stones, Yardbirds, Zombies, Everly Brothers etc.) so an SG is a safe bet. But if you're daring get the jazzmaster. I like anything with a vibrato system and single coils jazzmaster for me. but the SG you'll get your money's worth.

  • The Jazzmaster is wound in a similar way to a p90 but uses rod magnets instead of a bar magnet underneath (and screw pole pieces).

This makes it sound very different and closer to the strat sound than the p90. I am pretty sure the p90 also has a lot more windings, further pushing the voicing towards the bassy warm side rather than fender jangle and attack.

  • i believe muddy waters would play either a jaguar or a jazzmaster from time to time (:

  • I think you do not like this guitar, however is a great guitar for rock and pop music. I suggest you listen to Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., among other artists who use this guitar.

  • nice little tune man AWESOME!

  • stop using the stupid trem effect

  • Joe Pass actually played a jazzmaster early on. I believe you can find some old black and white video of him playing it on Youtube.

  • fingers up for the spanish cap!!!

  • the very second song you played sounded just like "feel like taking you home" from brendan benson

  • @flimflamfissure THat makes two of us

  • @flimflamfissure that makes two of us

  • I went to school with Nels Cline at Santa Monica City College. He said I was wasting my time in the class and should be on the road touring with a band. Quiting school was either the biggest mistake I ever made or the smartest decision depending on what you expect from the music business. I did become a good band member and knew what to expect out of myself unlike a lot of students fresh out of school.

  • The JM pickups are very different from P-90s. They use Fender style magnetized pole pieces while P-90s use a single bar magnet. The P-90 is a much hotter pickup. Stock P-90s will not fit a JM, but a couple of companies make JM form factor P-90s....

  • ....In the early 90s JMs gained some popularity in the emerging post-punk scene, largely through the influence of J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. and Thurston Moore/Lee Renaldo from Sonic Youth. The main reason for this is that they, and other historically less popular Fender models, were simply cheaper than Strats. Mascis says this outright.

  • ....The fact that they made lots of funny, buzzy noises and had a decent vibrato was an unexpected benefit. I myself acquired my '63 in '86 for exactly that reason and was pleased when I realized I could do odd things like play behind the bridge. I still think it is the best feedback guitar I have ever played. It is easy to induce and controllable with a variety of amps.

  • haha, lovin' that E chord.

Nice sound, thanks for the review

  • "two thousand and nine"

  • joe pass used a jazzmaster

  • Hey man i really dig your videos! I'm getting ready to make my next guitar purchase and i'm looking at a couple guitars: the Thurston Moore JM and an SG standard. I play a mix of indie/alternative rock (Radiohead, Wilco, ect...). I already own a strat and i'm playing through a twin reverb and a vox ac30. I like both guitars a lot for different reasons.

    Which one would you suggest?

  • @MyBeardisGood Don't know JM but love Gibson SG....

  • @johnhguitar Haha I just abbreviated Jazzmaster by writing JM. Sorry for the confusion

  • @johnhguitar Ironically the JM is a jazz master it is Thurston Moore's signature.

  • @MyBeardisGood Honestly, I love Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore's amazing, but I'm not a fan of his guitar. I'd go with an SG or a vintage Jazzmaster. Thurston's lacks a few knobs and it's kind of hollow-sounding to me.

  • @LionsTigersAndTrouts I ended up going with a 62 reissue. I love it! The TM model really only attracted me because of the Antiquity II pickups

  • @MyBeardisGood Go for a Jazz master man, im a huge Radiohead Junkie. Play the sonic youth jazz master, they're great, just plug that reverb in and make some beautiful music. But between the SG and that jazz master you really cant lose.

  • I absolutely love my classic player jazzmaster! i love it so much i have a J. Mascis sig. on the way! it will handle anything i throw at it including death, and black metal. ITs all about your amp rig and if you use any pedals.

  • I have a legit one. From the 60s, last model ever made before reissues. My dad bought it for 300 dollars, now, it's worth like, $10k original case. :D

  • The only jazz guy I know of who played the Jazzmaster was Roy Lanham. Even today I see more jazz guys playing Teles than Jazzmasters

  • Daddy Staples used a Jazzmaster, as the leader of the Staples Singers -

What I want to know is, does running the strings through the body give a different tone to a bass? I have a Japanese Squier P-bass with a screw-on bridge, and just wonder waht I'm missing from not having the through-body arrangement like the old P-basses

  • Guitar is crying DUUUUDEEE xD

  • can't believe people haven't mentioned sonic youth or appleseed cast

  • wish the tremolo wasn't on

  • Beautiful, elegant, superb tone, but whats with the extra toggle switch & tone & vol controls? I'm a Stratocaster fan but i would consider Fenders rebelic JM & Jaguar. I love sweeping curves, yeah baby yeah!

  • joe pass is one notable jazzman who used a jazzmaster, at least for a little while early in his career

  • dosnt matter what alex uses, the artic monkeys are a awful band. That 50s Jazzmaster is put to terrible use.

  • @LAMF1968 probably the most ignorant comment I've ever seen.

Have you heard Humbug? Excellent album, a giant step-up from their first two.

  • @LAMF1968

    I couldn't agree more.

  • alex turner from arctic monkeys uses one of these now but im pretty sure its an actual vintage not a re issue

  • also, the trem-lock is not designed to lock the trem system in place. it's designed to help snap the guitar back into tune if you break a string. it resets the bridge/saddles to a pre-set position.

  • dude, tonnes of rock guys use and still use these. there are pics of hendrix playing one! i've been surfing many videos as mine was just stolen, and i'm feeling a little nostalgic.

  • nice choice of words lol.

mikey einzinger from incubus uses jazzmasters now as well.

  • ugh.

  • A Jazzmaster is much more than a "Surf guitar". A little research on these instruments would prevent further spread of misinformation.

  • You know, you could help by spreading a little of the information you know. These videos aren't really a show of knowledge. There just a kick-starter to get people talking on the subject.

  • J Mascis uses a Jazzmaster.

  • The pickups aren't P90s. P90s have bar magnets, while Jazzmaster pickups have actual magnets for the polepieces like any other Fender single coil.

  • very informative videos.

  • Alot of 80's goth/alternative bands used jazzmasters/jaguars

well, a lot of my favourite ones anyway, like Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Ausgang, Birthday party for example

i personally would kill for a jazzmaster

  • Alot of 80's and early 90's alternative bands played these guitars not because of the tones they offered but their affordability. There wasn't much of a market for these guitars back then. The metalheads that dominated the guitar buying market considered them the ultimate guitar for geeks (think Elvis Costello). Times have changed and these guitars are now valuable again while alot of hair band guys now in their mid-forties are sitting home with juvenile looking guitars of little value.

  • please ....kill the tremelo!!!!!!!!!!

  • TREMOLO, you ignorant!

  • @antecresearch Sorry if I offended your your obviously heightened sense of self importance, you clown. Also, the next time you choose to comment, you may look into using a complete sentence.

  • or its just a typo

  • the word you were meaning to use is "ignoramus"

  • Mike Einzinger From Incubus uses this guitar and it sounds great!

  • The Jazzchannel is often overlooked, but it makes the guitar VERY versatile. I use it for experimental stuff, like with an E-Bow. The neck pickup is overlooked over all, really. Without the Jazzcircuit, it is capable of P-90 Goldtop tones.

  • Rock? J Mascis and Elvis Costello both have signature JMs

  • that flag totally ruins the look of the guitar

  • It's a sticker: Removable.

  • I was wondering, do these guitars hum a lot like strats do with hi gain amps?

  • yes, unless you're on both pickups (reverse wound/reverse polarity). it's like positions 2 and 4 on a strat.

  • John Frusciante uses Jazzmasters a lot.

  • No... He uses Jaguars quite a lot though.

  • He uses Jaguars but he owns a few Jazzmasters, buddy. And he has used them, too.

  • Where?

  • Actually he says that he likes to warm up to a jaguar but i've seen him with both multiple jaguars and jazzmasters. He also has used a toronado and a mustang.

  • May i ask what amp are you are using

  • Buzz Buster? Where would I find one of these? I have to put a piece of tape on the strings behind my bridge otherwise I get a very annoying metallic ring after I hit a string. Even when fully muted. Lesson learned: don't buy a roller bridge for a non-tremolo guitar.

  • The Jazzmaster is the consummate Surf Guitar along with the Jaguar. You'll hear it on most of the early Ventures albums before they swithched to Mosrite. The J/M has its own unique sound. It appeals to some but not to all. I love mine an 08 62RI.

  • if you go to fender's website it shows you al the people that play each guitar. the jazzmasters have plenty of rock bands that are endorsed by fender that play them including sonic youth, brand new, blink 182, gym class heroes, underoath and many others. not to mention the numerous bands the i've seen play them that don't have a deal with fender.

  • Comment removed

  • Is you're idea of two bands a lot? Do the research and see if you can find as many bands that use these guitars as possible. We'll be able to check out their recordings and see what kind of sound they get.

    Thanks for the comment...

  • @johnhguitar I can assist a bit. Wilco uses them, as well as a lot of alternative bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine.

  • what model is that fender tele on the right?

  • Telecaster American Deluxe Series. John reviewed that one also under the title "Telecaster 2/2"

    -jc

  • Kurt Cobain played Mustang and Jaguars, never a jazzmaster though.

  • @heron1991 there was a time back in 1988 when Kurt amazingly used an Epiphone, and when Kurt was 7 he had his first guitar which he couldn't play at all, and it was an Ibanez xD

  • @TheBlackOctane Yeah, an epiphone et 270. They are nice guitars.

  • @heron1991

Kurt replaced his single coils with humbucks though

  • @MrRagingsloth Yeah, it's still a jaguar though. Jazzmaster pickups are single coil too.

  • @heron1991 thats because mustangs and jaguars are short scale, Jazzmasters are not

that would have been the only reason

  • @nihilnoise Yeah maybe. But then he played a strat too at times.

  • Magic Slim is a notable Jazzmaster blues player. With flatwounds, the Jazzmaster gives a covicing Jazz sound. Cool guitar, like the Black!

  • joe pass used a jaguar early on.

  • Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown played a non-reverse Gibson Firebird. Similar shape, but different sound.

The jazzmaster pickups are different from P-90s, the former has rod magnets with the coil around them, the P-90s have the bar magnets under the coil and the magnetic field is transferred with using steel screws as poles.

  • What's the guitar Clarence is playing on "The Beat", a 1966 TV show out of Texas featuring Freddie King?

  • You're right, that one's a Jaguar.

  • Flaming Lips play jazzmasters

  • Jazzmaster (or jag) + vibrato = instant surf rock sound!

  • Elvis costello plays jazzmasters

  • radiohead and the zutons use jazzmasters.

  • A friend of mine has either a '61 or '62. SWEET tone about it. A lot more beat up than what John has here, but still worth a butt load of bucks.

  • kurt cobain played jazzmasters and jaguars

  • only jaguars. he never used a jazzmaster. jaguars, mustangs and jagstangs

  • 3:45 Magic Slim plays the blues in either a Jaguar or Mustang.

  • hey John, I really like that surfy sound, love the pipeline riff! It's kind of ironic that the jazzmaster was never really embraced by jazz players, I think Joe Pass played one in his youth :)

  • Actually, Joe Pass once played on a Jaguar. I don't know that there's any record of him using Jazzmaster though.

  • 1:06 : "twoo thousand and niine!"

    LOL!

  • That was awesome ha ha ha.

  • 00:50 - nice rockabilly rythm!

  • does anybody know what wood is used for the body?

  • I believe alder, most fender guitars are made out of alder.

  • thanx. i thought as much but thought it was odd he didn't mention it since he mentioned most of the other specs

  • Antique sound, too much effect...But people try to get something special...There´s not such thing anymore..You have to play and/or compose "special", beyond the guitar name or model...Anyway, he´s trying hard...Thanks for all reviews..!

  • elvis costello uses one

  • great playing, but I have a request. Could you possibly play each guitar clean and slightly distorted so we have more of an idea of how it sounds?

  • Like the review, but personally not fond on Jazzmasters

  • I love this guitar, but i gotta say those pickups are ugly...

  • the p-90s?

  • yep

  • yah

  • Joe Pass played one for a short time
