kind of a nerdy question...compared to the jaguar it looks like the jazzmaster has room for its 3rd p90style pickup, and the jaguar looks like it barely can fit 2 of those p90 style ones, does that mean the body on the jazzmaster is slight longer? i know the neck is longer than the jaguar neck, but are the bodies the same size?
If my chick and this guitar were falling off a building and i was holding them both i would drop the girl just so i could get a good grip on this guitar...both would be nice though.
That's like the joke: Q; If you drop a bowling ball and a banjo and an accordion off the Empire State Building, which one would hit the ground first? A; Who cares!
@allah211 I'm sorry but that guy offered a terrible answer... his answer was like saying only a vehicle bought with snow tires should drive in the winter.
surf rock, and indie-alternative wouldn't exist if you couldn't bend on these guits.
The vintage bridge is a piece of shit. Again, like buying a vintage car and never driving 'cuz the tires are shit.
A new Jazzy, or a replacement bridge will make for wonderful bends, and a great tone.
@allah211 I have a jazzy... and it is ok. to be honest the classic players are 'good' but are a very poor representation of how they should sound. all classic players sound strat'ish.
I have a Deluxe American Strat, A 62 RI Jaguar, and a Epiphone Swingster. Their all great , but you'll have to pry my Jazzmaster from my cold dead hands.
You probably know this already, but the Jazzmaster is used quite alot in Alternative Rock, bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Feeder and My Bloody Valentine to name a few
whats the difference between a jaguar and a jazzmaster? can this guitar play heavy distortion riffs? lyk can it do... queens of the stone age and red hot chili peppers.?
well depends on what sound you're going for. an SG is a pretty standard guitar its up there with the strat, les paul, telecaster etc. I'm a strat man myself and i like playing 60s/50s style music (Surf Music, beatles, early stones, Yardbirds, Zombies, Everly Brothers etc.) so an SG is a safe bet. But if you're daring get the jazzmaster. I like anything with a vibrato system and single coils jazzmaster for me. but the SG you'll get your money's worth.
The Jazzmaster is wound in a similar way to a p90 but uses rod magnets instead of a bar magnet underneath (and screw pole pieces).
This makes it sound very different and closer to the strat sound than the p90. I am pretty sure the p90 also has a lot more windings, further pushing the voicing towards the bassy warm side rather than fender jangle and attack.
I think you do not like this guitar, however is a great guitar for rock and pop music. I suggest you listen to Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., among other artists who use this guitar.
I went to school with Nels Cline at Santa Monica City College. He said I was wasting my time in the class and should be on the road touring with a band. Quiting school was either the biggest mistake I ever made or the smartest decision depending on what you expect from the music business. I did become a good band member and knew what to expect out of myself unlike a lot of students fresh out of school.
The JM pickups are very different from P-90s. They use Fender style magnetized pole pieces while P-90s use a single bar magnet. The P-90 is a much hotter pickup. Stock P-90s will not fit a JM, but a couple of companies make JM form factor P-90s....
....In the early 90s JMs gained some popularity in the emerging post-punk scene, largely through the influence of J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. and Thurston Moore/Lee Renaldo from Sonic Youth. The main reason for this is that they, and other historically less popular Fender models, were simply cheaper than Strats. Mascis says this outright.
....The fact that they made lots of funny, buzzy noises and had a decent vibrato was an unexpected benefit. I myself acquired my '63 in '86 for exactly that reason and was pleased when I realized I could do odd things like play behind the bridge. I still think it is the best feedback guitar I have ever played. It is easy to induce and controllable with a variety of amps.
Hey man i really dig your videos! I'm getting ready to make my next guitar purchase and i'm looking at a couple guitars: the Thurston Moore JM and an SG standard. I play a mix of indie/alternative rock (Radiohead, Wilco, ect...). I already own a strat and i'm playing through a twin reverb and a vox ac30. I like both guitars a lot for different reasons.
@MyBeardisGood Honestly, I love Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore's amazing, but I'm not a fan of his guitar. I'd go with an SG or a vintage Jazzmaster. Thurston's lacks a few knobs and it's kind of hollow-sounding to me.
@MyBeardisGood Go for a Jazz master man, im a huge Radiohead Junkie. Play the sonic youth jazz master, they're great, just plug that reverb in and make some beautiful music. But between the SG and that jazz master you really cant lose.
I absolutely love my classic player jazzmaster! i love it so much i have a J. Mascis sig. on the way! it will handle anything i throw at it including death, and black metal. ITs all about your amp rig and if you use any pedals.
I have a legit one. From the 60s, last model ever made before reissues. My dad bought it for 300 dollars, now, it's worth like, $10k original case. :D
Daddy Staples used a Jazzmaster, as the leader of the Staples Singers -
What I want to know is, does running the strings through the body give a different tone to a bass? I have a Japanese Squier P-bass with a screw-on bridge, and just wonder waht I'm missing from not having the through-body arrangement like the old P-basses
Beautiful, elegant, superb tone, but whats with the extra toggle switch & tone & vol controls? I'm a Stratocaster fan but i would consider Fenders rebelic JM & Jaguar. I love sweeping curves, yeah baby yeah!
also, the trem-lock is not designed to lock the trem system in place. it's designed to help snap the guitar back into tune if you break a string. it resets the bridge/saddles to a pre-set position.
dude, tonnes of rock guys use and still use these. there are pics of hendrix playing one! i've been surfing many videos as mine was just stolen, and i'm feeling a little nostalgic.
You know, you could help by spreading a little of the information you know. These videos aren't really a show of knowledge. There just a kick-starter to get people talking on the subject.
Alot of 80's and early 90's alternative bands played these guitars not because of the tones they offered but their affordability. There wasn't much of a market for these guitars back then. The metalheads that dominated the guitar buying market considered them the ultimate guitar for geeks (think Elvis Costello). Times have changed and these guitars are now valuable again while alot of hair band guys now in their mid-forties are sitting home with juvenile looking guitars of little value.
@antecresearch Sorry if I offended your your obviously heightened sense of self importance, you clown. Also, the next time you choose to comment, you may look into using a complete sentence.
The Jazzchannel is often overlooked, but it makes the guitar VERY versatile. I use it for experimental stuff, like with an E-Bow. The neck pickup is overlooked over all, really. Without the Jazzcircuit, it is capable of P-90 Goldtop tones.
Actually he says that he likes to warm up to a jaguar but i've seen him with both multiple jaguars and jazzmasters. He also has used a toronado and a mustang.
Buzz Buster? Where would I find one of these? I have to put a piece of tape on the strings behind my bridge otherwise I get a very annoying metallic ring after I hit a string. Even when fully muted. Lesson learned: don't buy a roller bridge for a non-tremolo guitar.
The Jazzmaster is the consummate Surf Guitar along with the Jaguar. You'll hear it on most of the early Ventures albums before they swithched to Mosrite. The J/M has its own unique sound. It appeals to some but not to all. I love mine an 08 62RI.

hey John, I really like that surfy sound, love the pipeline riff! It's kind of ironic that the jazzmaster was never really embraced by jazz players, I think Joe Pass played one in his youth :)
Antique sound, too much effect...But people try to get something special...There´s not such thing anymore..You have to play and/or compose "special", beyond the guitar name or model...Anyway, he´s trying hard...Thanks for all reviews..!

Joe Pass used a Fender Jazzmaster to record 'Sounds of Synanon' and he created some great Jazz recordings with the guitar.
Later (circa 1962) he used a Fender Jaguar to play live on a Jazz show; the show is available on youtube.
Again, Joe sounded as amazing as ever!
So, some legends did use these guitars outside surf, indie, grunge etc.
thanks for the great posts John; keep on playing; peace out.

how are string bends on this guitar on the high E string? because on mustangs ik that string bends are difficult because the string seems to slip off
allah211 10 months ago
String bending on these guitars aren't easy because of the bridge design. Most people use strats and teles for that.
However, these guitars definitely have their own sound and quirky personality.

A friend of mine has either a '61 or '62. SWEET tone about it. A lot more beat up than what John has here, but still worth a butt load of bucks.

hey John, I really like that surfy sound, love the pipeline riff! It's kind of ironic that the jazzmaster was never really embraced by jazz players, I think Joe Pass played one in his youth :)

Actually, Joe Pass once played on a Jaguar. I don't know that there's any record of him using Jazzmaster though.

Antique sound, too much effect...But people try to get something special...There´s not such thing anymore..You have to play and/or compose "special", beyond the guitar name or model...Anyway, he´s trying hard...Thanks for all reviews..!

great playing, but I have a request. Could you possibly play each guitar clean and slightly distorted so we have more of an idea of how it sounds?
