For a funny car the driver sits behind the engine. This balance point makes it difficult to control the ride and the car is woobling very quick. So thats could looks "funny". The other top class is top fuel. Therefor the driver sits in front of the engine.

Notice the bodystyle (probably a body of a '77 Chevy Monza) comparing to today's FC bodies; an average F/C run down the track would cost about $7,000- $9,000---FOR ONE RUN!!! That's why some of these "weekend warriors" can only run what they brung; and cheap parts can provide them cheap thrills...Like that explosion!!!

Nitro cars don't need to bring there rpm up at the starting lines like Alcohol cars they have instant power once they touch there excellerator and you can hear the cackle of the engine .

Too quiet, back in those days they might have only been running one fuel pump and magneto, them modern ones do too but only for the burnout, after they back up and are ready for staging the crew switch on the second pump and magneto. look for other clips and watch how much more fuel vapour is visible from the pipes just before they launch

If you are talking about the cracking and popping noises those are normal for a high out-put engine running open header. With something like the amount of horse power he has i'm almost positive the only way you know something is wrong is when it blows.

Camshaft Timing on a funny car is set 10 degrees behind because they have so much power that it twists the camshaft 10 degrees ahead, this is why at idle they sound like poping and run bad but when they give it full throttle the motor twists the cam ahead and the timeing is right and the car runs beautifully.

Knocking? No. However if you notice on the burn previous to staging there was an obvious drop out on the ignition. You want a solid steady burn and that was not pedelling.. As Salem said there's no where for a loaded up motor to backfire to so bye-bye charger.

Not camera, the cam (as in cam shaft). And yes it does make it sound like that. It's just distorted a little because the vid is so old. It wasn't knocking, what happened was what happens when a super charged nitro car "backfires" through the carburetor because the timing (or something else) isn't set just right. In a normally aspirated (non supercharged "street") car,

pt2. it would simply flame out the carb, and no harm done. But in a super charged engine, there is nowhere for the flame to go, since everything is being compressed by the charger. Plus there is nitro methane added to the fuel, which makes it 10x more volatile. It ignights, and BOOM, there goes the top of the engine.
