I have a book character named Anastasia but she goes by Stasia. I say Anastasia the same way that you do, but for some reason, when it's shortened to Stasia, I say it Stosha instead of Staysia.
Natalia is from CSI: Miami (: And there's a Tatiana in the book I talked about in my last comment and she was okay.. but she was old, so it sounds like an old lady name.
I don't want to upset you, but I've been watching some of you videos and you keep say Anastasia wrong. It was meant to be pronounced An-na-zta-zia. With a z not s sound.
my fav is Milena bcuz its my name :) and Dmitri bcuz its my brothers name...also the name Aleksei which wasnt on ur list but should be...thats my sons name :)
Well, my name is Natalia (we spell it that way) and my mom gave it to me because she loves Russian names, and I was born in December, a couple weeks before Christmas. And no, we're not Russian hehe.
Well, I'm Russian... Kazimir is actually a Polish name, Rurik is not popular nowadays, Milena is quite rare as well (it is more Bulgarian than Russian), Luka is used more in Ukraine than in Russia (in Russia it sounds a bit strange)...
The most frequently used men names are: Alexandre, Sergey, Andrei, Dimitri, Pavel, Ivan, Artyom, Vyacheslav (Slava), Youri, Nikita, Oleg, Igor, Eugeni....
Very popular girls names are Olga, Elena, Svetlana, Irina, Tatyana, Anastasia, Marina, Yulia, Natalia..
The name of males number #3!!! but the one thing I do love Russian history and the language too, even Russian is the number one hardest language!!! But one last thing name whole name is in Spanish, I just telling you mine first name. Antonio, in English is Anthony, but a nickname is Tony!
Every time i see Viktor spelt with a "k" i think of Viktor Krum from Harry Potter lol and my cousin's name is Malayna :) i have been curious as to what it means and have never found it thanks! My uncle actually got the name from when he was younger and he thought Mulan's name was Malayna for some reason and he and my aunt thought it was pretty (after finding out that wasn't the character's name) and decided to name her that. We have some strange name back-stories in my family lol
my moms name is Katya (spelled katia) and everyone has such a hard time pronouncing it i dont get it. its pretty easy lol i love love love anastacia btw:)
I can understand why they would name their sons kazimir. Aren't all boys wild disruptive monsters when they are kids? I was during kindergarden. I think it is a form of good humor.
well, i think nikolai is very cute, and I LOVE russian names, particulary boys names cause they sound so strong and powerful. btw, I like Aleksei for boy name i think it sounds really cute

Nadia/Nadja/Nadya can be considered Arabic/Persian names, too. Also: one unusual instance of Nadya as non-Russian applies to Octomom, whose real name is Natalie Suleman.
@ClassicTVMan1981X I know that my name is also used in Persia and Arabia, but as far as I can remember it means "Morning dew" and has nothing common with the russian version, although they sound the same:-)
My favourite Russian name is Lara. Quite popular here in Australia making the top 100 for quite a few years now. In Russian is means "From Larisa" or "famous". It also means "happy/cheerful" in Greek, and "The Smile" in Spanish. :)
Our daughters name is Lara, and her nickname is "LaLa" which we later found was the Hawaiian version of Lara.
I'm a writer and many of your male name choices are names for my beloved characters. Excellent choices. I particularly love the name Konstantin. It happens to be one of my favorite character names as well. The shorted name for it is Kostya.
I have two Russian friends and their names are so pretty. One is called Tatyana (though hers is spelt with a Y, not an I) and her younger sister is called Anya-Mariya, though the kids in her class call her Anna-Maria because it's so much easier for them. The other friend is called Ksenia. It's such a great name, but it's horrible for people to spell because the K has such a short sound a lot of people barely hear it! I love Russian names, especially for girls. Katya is probably my favorite!
@Altare216 Kazimir this name designates opposite: the world announcement. This extremely-rare name at russian. About aggressive-military policy of russians, think what quantity Russia in history BEGAN (an attack on other countries) wars, and what quantity of wars there began other "european"(Where enters also USA) countries of world.
Russian surnames besides terminations "ov" as have the terminations and "iy" (ий), i don't speak about surnames (words) of nouns. It is necessary to know that some mongoloid people of Russia take to themselves as russian names, surnames and patronymics. Russia consists not only of russian people, but in majority of 80 % is russians.
And russians don't carry a surname terminating on: "ko"(ко), "chuk"(чук) and "ich"(ич). "ko" and "chuk" is ukrainian surnames. "ich" is as far as i know (according to many people) belarus or jewish (born in USSR) surnames. Termination "ich" at russians is present only at a patronymic. But, should understand that patronymic is given to children from the father, and marriages can consist between people of different nationalities. Thus, russian (half-russian) can carry and not russian surnames.
I have forgotten russian surnames as terminate on "in"/ин. Only it is less extended, than the terminations "ov". Example: Gagarin, Karamzin, Pelevin. Example ukrainian surnames: Belenko, Kiriyenko. Example jewish surnames from USSR: Kaganovich, Yakubovich
One of my friends is Russian and her name is Victoria, but every one calls her Vika. I just love her name, she totally saved the name Victoria for me because i would always think of Vicky from the Fairly Odd Parents! LOL
Alexander: R - Sasha, T - Sashok Andrey: R - Andrey \ U - Andrey Anton: R - Anton, U - Anton Dmitry: R - Dima, U - Diman Evgenie: R - Jgenia, U - Jgeniok Gennady: R - Gena, U - Genka Igor: R - Igor, U - Igoriok Ivan: R - Vania, U - Vaniok Jury: R - Jury, U - Jurik Konstantin/Nikolay: R - Kolia, U - Kostik Maxim: R - Max, U - Max Michail: R - Misha, U - Mishok Nikita: R - Nikita, U - Nikitos Oleg: R - Oleg, U - Oleg Roman: R - Roma, U - Roman
I - To some, names to prefix of a word termination increases: "ka". For example: Vanka (from Ivan).
T - To some, names to prefix of word termination increases: "echka". For example: Vanechka (from Ivan), Sashechka, Jgenichka. To other names, to prefix of a word termination increases: "usha". For example: Andrusha, Antosha
@Russianitro 11. Morozov 12. Volkov 13. Alekseiev 14. Lebedev 15. Semenov 16. Egorov 17. Pavlov 18. Kozlov 19. Stepanov 20. Nikolaev 21. Orlov 22. Andreiev 23. Makarov 24. Nikitin 25. Zakharov These surnames are actual for both male and female russians. To female surnames, to word termination one letter increases: "a". For example man's Semenov, female - Semenova.
Most popular man's names which are carried by russians: Александр/Alexander (№1 on popularity), Дмитрий /Dmitry (I think that №2 on popularity), Андрей/Andrey (one of most widespread), Сергей/Sergey, Евгений/Evgenie, Иван/Ivan, Николай/Nikolay, Вячеслав/Vyacheslav, Константин/Konstantin, Игорь/Igor, Георгий/George, Геннадий/Gennady, Максим/Maxim, Олег/Oleg, Павел/Pavel, Никита/Nikita, Роман/Roman, Станислав/Stanislav, Михаил/Michael, Владимир/Vladimir, Антон/Anton, Виктор/Victor, Юрий/Jury
Rurik reminds me of my problem solving teacher Mr. Roehrich (ror-ick) which isnt so appealling in my opinion LOL!! hes my math teacher next year :( one more con to living in a tiny town!!!
my favorite russian boy name is nikolai for sure, my little brothers name is isaac nikolai btw, and a name that should have been on the list is the russian girls name Yulia , its so lovely because its pronaunced with a soft Y , i really like it :)
Mikhail is pronounced "Mi-ha-il" - I don't know why they put the 'k' in there.
Alas, the English spellings utilizing 'y' don't do a very good job representing the sound one would use in Russian, which is much softer and closer to the 'i' sound.
In case you were curious, Anastasia is pronounced with an 's' sound rather than a 'zh' sound in the second part, and the initial 'a' and the 'a' after the 't' is pronounced like the 'a's in 'mama'.
OMG you cut me with a dull knife! Please don't make Anastasia sound like Anesthesia. It's A-nah-stah-see(!)-ya
I'll post a video to help you. Names you got 99% close are Tatiana, Marina, Dmitry and Nikolai. The problem originates in the way we Russians spell our names in English: instead of choosing the "phonetic" spelling we choose the one that looks more close to Cyrillic characters, i.e. Елена=Elena => Yelena.
I have a book character named Anastasia but she goes by Stasia. I say Anastasia the same way that you do, but for some reason, when it's shortened to Stasia, I say it Stosha instead of Staysia.

Quite a few of these names are from Vampire Academy.
I know that there's a Victor in it and I HATED him..so..that ruined my opinion. There's also a Viktor in Harry Potter and I don't much care for him.
There's a Dimitri in VA and I LOVE his character. Because of him Dimitri is in my top 3 names.
I'm pretty sure there's a Mikhail in there too. There was a Nikolai..I didn't care for his character too much.
My old Russian ballet's teacher's name is Lillia.
I know a Karina. I don't like her.

Sorry, this was by request and I don't speak Russian. I'm saying the names how they would be pronounced where I live.

@AnastasiaRuby
PS nice view. Vancouver?
PPS Rurik is a viking name
