That happens, because the game subtracts 1 from the pokéballs number and checks if the value is 0. Voila, you've got 255 pokémons. And the routine that draws the pokéballs in the machine tries to draw 255 pokéballs. After 6, there isn't any more space, so it tries to draw in the tilemap(somehow) and it draws garbage instead of pokéballs, because the code for drawing a sprite is different from the code to draw a tile.
