If he loved you and was only going to be away one year he'd wait for you, no questions asked. I hate to tell you this because I don't even know you, but if he truly loves you he'd wait forever. It sounds to me like he wants to be able to fuck around and be 100% he's got someone to come back to. If it were me I wouldn't give him the security, move on and make him the past, never look back or wonder what could have been. It cannot be as good as your future.
