@08kemitc - correction - if ur referring to Damuni who passed away last year then ur wrong. Isireli Racule who was the Fijian Chief during the time this movie was made was the one who wrote the PCC version which is known by many who have been to or worked at the PCC as "Bula Laie". The original song is called "Bula Malaya" which originated during the conflict in Malaya now known as Malaysia - is a popular song all throughout Fiji. The Fijians at the time were under British rule and therefore t
actually both of you this song is FIJIAN!!! not Tongan or Tahitian I know the grandson of the man that wrote this song. And he was a chief at the Fijian village at the Polynesian Cultural Center. He passed away in 2010. But is song will always live on forever.
Yes a great song. So unpretentious. 2 mins 26 in to the item there seems to be a blend of indigenous Fijians with a Maori influence of poi and piupiu. was that in the movie?
Written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett. The song is based on an old Tongan chant, Bula Lai by Iserati Recula. The instrumental was recorded July 26, 1965 at Radio Recorders and Elviss vocal was added on August 2, 1965. It was featured in the film Paradise, Hawaiian Style; Elvis sang it twice during the film. It is available on the FTD Paradise, Hawaiian Style CD and the Frankie and Johnny-Paradise, Hawaiian Style soundtrack compilation.
It's actually from Fiji and not Tonga. The 'Bula' gives it away for starters, as it's Fijian language, not Tongan.
The man who wrote the original chant is playing the derua (a Fijian instrument) - which is another clue - in the end credits. The fact that he Fijians are the ones who perform it at the end credits should eliminate all doubt that it is Fijian and not Tongan.
This is such a very beautiful, exotic, fun, soothing, relaxing and passionate song. Elvis has the very best rendition of this jewel without a shadow of a doubt. This is one of hundreds of hidden gems recorded by King Elvis. Elvis will always be #1. Thanks a lot for re-uploading this video. It was great seeing it again, 10 Stars as always Jackie. All of your videos are absolutely perfect in every way.

The correct song title in the Fijian language is “Bula Lā’ie” ( “Hello Lā’ie” ). I love this English song as well - so energetic.
