thank you soooo much for uploading these I haven't seen Jim in years he was or is a great proformer not sure if he is still with us, love him anyway, thank you thank you thank you
It's so funny. At 1:42 you can hear a woman in the audience go, "That was good!!" I can't blame her for being surprised though. I don't think there is another person out there who can do this.
I dont think it has a thing to do with gayness per se. Jim is amazing and Carol got a lot of mileage comedically off this number.. yet Jim rocked it out.. oh, variety shows of the seventies.. didnt we love them!
"When Streisand hosted that private party in Malibu, she promised her guests that she would sing. Everyone was there: Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, Carol Burnett, Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty. After dinner, it was Bailey who performed, and only when he was accepting his final ovation did the real Babs come out to greet him. 'Afterwards,' Bailey recalls, Warren Beatty told me, 'I was completely taken in. Completely.'"
Yes. I heard him live in San Francisco. The first half was as Judy Garland and the second half was as Barbara. It is amazing enough that he can do one of these voices convincingly, but to do both is even more amazing.
...and yet all these years later, Rosie's variety show lasts all of one episode. Not because we are less accepting of the gay/transgender lifestyle, but we are intolerant of bad variety shows. Carol never gave us a single one. God bless her.
(As a total aside, BTW, the spellchecker underlines transgender. Apparently Google/YouTube doesn't recognize the word. I feel a little better that it also underlined YouTube. What website doesn't recognize its own name in spellcheck?)
ohhhhh...it never occured to me back then that he was "straight," so his "claim" was wasted on me :-) I guess the first out TV crossover was....hmmm...RuPaul? Or am I missing others in between (big gap)...
Yes it is him singing he's the first Crosser/Drag Queen to make it big. To go on Carol Bernett in 72 was a big leap for her and him she could have been cancled for it in the 70's
brilliant tribute artist!

Where did good television go?
Simple - it migrated to the computer. Good performance is timeless! Now it will live forever.

re-reading, may have misunderstood; isn't "be accepted by" the definition of cross over?
