Even for a basketball, shoes, work clothes, towel, lunchbox, toiletries, boxing gloves? Im riding a bike so i dont really want to use a duffel bag.. What kind of bag would u recommend?
@SebOutdoors Thanks. I've added a fews since this video was made because I can't help myself. I gave the Camelback to my stepson and the Kestrel is now my Wife's winter daypack. I've added the GoLite Jam in an attempt to go toward the light (ha ha). I've also added a new day pack recently (Gregory Miwok 22) and I love it. The Deuter is a great pack but I've found that I use it less and less. I think I'm going to us it for my bushcraft pack now that I think about it.
@rowdybeaver33 I think it would be great for a bushcraft pack. The size of it seems good for bushcraft. And a Kestrel is also good for a winter day pack, no doubt.
I have also seen the Gregory Mikow 22, and it seems like a good backpack. I have only seen pictures of it. Maybe you should make a little video of it, for a day hike, or something like that. That would be nice.
@rowdybeaver33 Damn I know right. This motivated me to go out for a little 10k today up here in Idaho. It was raining pretty good but all my north face shit kept me warm and dry.
A nice collection of quality bags. These all look tough, durable and quite functional. As you learn more about going lighter, as you say you'd like to, use your digital scale and weigh your packs, sleeping gear, shelter, stove, water-carriers, everything. That's the motivation of how to really lighten up. Someday you'll be inspired on what kind of backpack to buy to save yourself three to four pounds on a pack alone and pounds on your other gear. I like man purses, too. They're great performers.
@slodeth5 That's a fairly old video. I'm already well into lightening up with the exception of my pack. After researching pretty much every UL pack out there I think I've finally decided to go with the Golite Jam. There is a Mountain Laurel pack that is still tempting me though.
i cant wait for your review on the kestrel 28. i got the kestrel 48 and its an excellent overnight bag. im looking into a day bag such as the kestrel 28. i also have my eye on the rei traverse 30. anyways thanks for youre over view. cant wait for my own pack collection hahaha
As a gear guy, I can totally relate to your illness. I fear I am afflicted as well. Have you ever looked at Arc'Teryx? They make some phenomenal packs. Gregory has some excellent features too.
Osprey makes some great packs, but I love external pockets, but they seem to skimp on those. My favorite pack right now is my Kelty Tioga. I've had it for 5 yrs and it's bomber.
I would love to have an Arc'Teryx pack. I just can't justify the expense. They're proud of those damn things.
I'm more of a stream line guy. 99% of the time anything that I would need during the hike (rain gear, snacks etc) will fit in the lid, side or stretch back pocket. In 22 years in the infantry each generation of A.L.I.C.E. pack had lots of external pockets. I guess I just like the sleekness of the Osprey and like packs. Thanks for the comment.
I guess being a civilian has me caught up in the "tactical Tom" syndrome. I love MOLLE webbing and lots of pockets and -purpose-built pouches. But I definitely relate to the streamlining - I know the perilsof snags.
I guess it's personal preference like anything else. Just to reiterate, I do enjoy your videos. They're all very well done and informative. Knives and knots........are you kidding me??!! My wife thinks I'm nuts.
I've had my eye on the kestrel 38 or 48 for weekend trips. They are pretty sweet. I have the Aether 60 and I love it but I'm trying to go smaller. And yes I have the same sickness haha
Thanks for the comment mrski. I'll try to do each of these bags justice in terms of their individual reviews. I'm still trying to figure out my new video camera and the editing program that I got for Christmas. I'll try to have a pack review up soon.
Great vid, hope you don't mind if I steal this idea and do a pack vid of my own. :)

@4det5R Holy crap! That's a lot of stuff. You may want to go with the larger version then. The 38 liter.
rowdybeaver33 2 weeks ago
I'll be using it as a gym bag.
4det5R 2 weeks ago
you think a basketball might fit in the kestrel 28?
4det5R 2 weeks ago
@4det5R Yes, but why in the hell would you want to take a basketball on a hike?
rowdybeaver33 2 weeks ago
@4det5R The Kestrel is waaaay too much bag to be a gym bag. It is very hiking specific.

Nice packs you got there! See the Deuter, looks like a great backpack.

@rowdybeaver33 Be sure to do a video on the pack you chose. There's a million and one reviews on other packs but few on the Ultra-light ones. Thanks.
