  • Ab --"

  • How can you smoke if you sing - it fucks the voice - could be much better.

  • @TheGyandip & heroine ain't good for your piano playing, but they both kill it. "Could be much better"? I think you have been proven wrong by a great performance. Oops, that was a rehearsal.

    MONICA ZETTERLUND, BILL EVANS -

    WALTZ FOR DEBBY........RIP MONICA

  • google monica's vals for the swedish lyrics by beppe wolgers.

the english translation is in my blog (theinkbrain) at worldpress 'dot' com. i can't put the url here, but its not hard to find.

for the Swedish lyrics and an English translation.

  • Should be called "Waltz for Winstons" (the brand I used to smoke back when this was recorded).

  • Brilliant! I have goose bumps all over my body.

  • Fantastic. Thank you!

  • Absolutely beautiful. Simple, beautiful, tender!!!

I did swedish to english translation not knowing how wonderful the lyric is. Almost as though I am listening to Tom Jobim's song.

  • Wonderful song, great performance, but at 1:47, WHO'S a "moron"?

  • @gilgamess the word she sings is mårron which means morning:)

  • @gilgamess morgon = morning !

  • Wow!

  • I would give my right arm for a night with Monica Zetterlund...To make some great recordings of course.

  • @MsMarc1234 hahaha

    that's funny dude

  • Just beatiful!

  • GHlorious!

  • I feel honored to be the one thousandth person to like this video. Great job Bill and his trio.

  • How is it we can hear her voice so clearly when she's not singing into a microphone?

  • @VeronicasFan2

There is a Condenser microphone above her, tracking her movements.

  • This is the worst I have heard BIll play, and he is great here!!! No one is better than him.

  • So, beautiful. This is a sort of dream music.

  • ENKEL WANKEL UM?

  • @ahaaaaaaaaah

    "Enkel, vacker, öm"

    is Swedish and translates to

    "Simple, beautiful, tender"

  • @liktocholikt looks like its the swedish jazz singer Svante Turesson.but i can be wrong.

    IMD

  • All are invited to a BEAUTIFUL Bill Evans master class on his life and music. Type in "Dave Frank" Evans on Youtube. Bill lives!

  • Bill Evans is holy cool! And love that mere smile and smoking

    at the end.

  • funny that he asked that the tempo be slowed so she could remember the lyrics. I recall seeing an interview with Bill Evans in which he said the original tempo for this song was closer to this version than what we heard on instrumental versions.

Either way it's a great song and this performance is a classic

  • Ah, nice. Very nice!

  • bill evans and monica look like perfect couple :) should have dated each other!! :p

  • @write2yibo

Do you know that they did not?

  • smoking+singing = doesnt seem right, but it sure as hell sounds right.

  • @lius09 She's a goddess and can do whatever pleases her. Just as all women :P

  • @lius09

Without smoke it can't be called Jazz!

  • Bill evans intuitive knowlegde about harmonies and the naturality of a melody was in my opinion one of the highest points music reached ever, from its begin on... unbelieveble...

Does somebody have a Translation of the lyrics? I would really like to know what it means exactly, I can guess some things from the german, but almoust nothing..

  • @gugelhopf28

He knew soooo much of harmony of all eras. I recommend reading the book "The Harmony of Bill Evans", by Jack Railly. It is a very technical book, but gives a very good insight of who he was in terms of one of the musical geniuses of the 20th Century. He could "read" from a Stravinsky score directly transposing to his pianos and he didn't miss a note!...

  • Great Fun to read drummer Alex Riels biography. Hear about his experiences with Bill Evans Trio and find the exact same videoclip that he just mentioned in the book. I love technology!

  • Lindo e inédito para mim. Obrigado Gabriel :)

  • How romantic is this?????

  • @Guitfiddlejase

waltz for debby is a song about childhood!

  • @mts2 Oh! I'm not embarrassed at all!

  • hahaha so funny, she´s smoking, asking something and starts singing. xD

actually i was wondering she was smoking be4, i thought good singers do not smoke.. well but i dont know such a lot about singing though..

  • @oldwarcraftgamer One of the realities of cigarette smoking and singing is that it can give your voice a raspy quality, something that a lot of blues and jazz vocalists liked. Of course, it takes away from your breath support, as well as the horrible things it does to the body. By the time the warnings came out in the 60s, most of the singers were already hooked, and they didn't want to take away from that certain something in their voice, so they kept smoking.

  • Totalt charmerende ... stor, stor kunst!

  • Totalt charmerende ... stor, stor kunst!

  • I may be wrong, but I feel a slight tension between Zetterlund and Evans, which tries in vain to break the singer, without success.

  • In Deed!

  • Whoa! My last name is Zetterlund! :)

  • yes, more cigarettes!

  • @mammamaya61 YES!

  • 4:15 is as big as BE ever smiles.

  • screw Clinton and Lewinsky. This is the REAL Bill and Monica saga. :-)

  • Shut the fuck up and listen to the tune.

  • Amazing trio work. So effortless...and this was only a try out version.

  • Hey Jim & Betsy,

Thought this was a little Mad Men-esque, what with Zetterlund's drag on the cigarette right before she sings. Anyway, courtesy of Bill Evans, this one's for Gramma Kelly!

    Best,

    Paul

  • So true. My sisters have emphysema and even cancer and can't stop.

    Don't smoke!

  • Pure gold...Thanks for posting!

  • Bill Evans was one of the greatest musicians ever. Monica was one of Sweden's best female singers ever. Their spontaneous meeting is a true gem. This song is in Swedish. The lyrics are true poetry written by John Bertil "Beppe" Wolgers, a Swedish poet. This YouTube clip is a timeless work of art.

  • Awesome

  • Cool.

    So...She's singing in Swedish, right?

  • @pametna59 right :) u can find the lyrics of her online somewhere....beautiful....

  • timeless recording. what a sweet swedish voice! fun to see a recording where it was still allowed to smoke ;-)

  • como todas las DIVAS

  • At 1'22" Bill is looking at Monika like, "Why the #$% aren't you coming in?"

  • i can only imagine what it would have been like in that room

  • Lyrics part IV: (phew.. :P)

Very friendly strong / You have shown me the world / For me so it is / Beautiful and bright / Just us two / Waiting a million days / And here we are and the world / Sings my waltz melody / Simple friendly tender / And it reminds me / Of hundreds of days / I've been with you / Both winter and spring / And autumn and yesterday / And all of the days to come / Now that the summer is a thousand years

  • Lyrics Part III: (Translation by MUN)

Simple beautiful tender/ Is my waltz melody / My waltz fantasy / A song in a dream / Slowly morning light / Flows over our window / Paints a pattern / On all the houses / On that very day / The beautiful day I learned to say "We" / It was born - my waltz melody / Simple beautiful tender / And it reminds me / Of hundreds of days / That I've been with you / Both winter and spring / And autumn and yesterday

  • Lyrics part II:

  • Lyrics, part I: (by millionthusername)

  • @AGAG789 there is a part missing between the I and II....do you have it???? @MillionthUsername or do you?

thanks!.. so much more beautiful lyrics than the original version

  • @anetola Sorry! here's the missing part:

Våra dagar är bara för korta

    Plötsligen ringer min klocka

Upp med dig klockan är åtta

    ;P

  • thanks so much @AGAG789,

    nice guy you!...

... I´ve been obssesively watching this and other monica videos....

    I just adooore her!.

    thanks again,

    =)

  • @anetola No problem! Hey if you enjoy these kind of singers I suggest stacey kent, her version of Jardin d'hiver is sublime, she has a very shy lovely feeling: watch?v=9K9vT6wvfSc

  • Sweden´s best voice. She died of smoking in bed, she should have listen to Peggy Lee: "Don´t smoke in bed".

  • I think monica and bill had a thing. I think she also had a thing with Miles Davis

  • Bill seems kinda indifferent to her.

  • hmm, someone said that already, it is amazing though :)

  • The subtitles in the end is Danish too. There should be no doubt that it was recorded in Denmark.

  • a beautiful woman singing jazz in Swedish. that's hard to beat

  • anyone swedish please post the lyrics???

    =) thanks in advance!!

  • @write2yibo

I keep trying to post the Swedish lyrics here on this video and for some reason it never works for me. YT is so weird sometimes. You can IM me if you want. Maybe then you could post them here.

  • @MillionthUsername I'd love the lyrics too if it isn't that of a problem :)

  • She sings so naturally!!!! It just comes out!!!

  • @KasiaGliwski You can thank the cigs for that one.

  • i dont know what she is saying and honestly i dont wanna know, this is beautiful

  • @wassermeister

right on wassermeister...i love this without understanding the words

  • Beautiful... Just beautiful.

  • Bill Evans just got himself a brand new life-time fan. :D

  • Please tell me Bill "got him some" after the session.

  • @cardhang He got him some heroin, appearantly...

  • @lehnrik Ouch.

  • This is incredible footage.

  • man i love bill's dynamics and phrasing, my favorite

  • Jazz and Vocalese .....suddely they have really merged with sweden .....but only wirt such a wonderful woman as Monica Z.....smashing and so refined so sweet and yet so extremely refined Bill Evans in an extremely concentrated an loving play ....sheer deep pleasure with enormous Fun ...and relaxation ....MAGIC ....

  • Copenhagen is in DENMARK NOT SWEDEN!

  • no I'm pretty sure it's in Sweden buddy!

  • Nah sorry mate. Copenhagen is in Denmark. Monica Zetterlund is Swedish though. :)

  • Don't LIE!

  • We are both Scandinavian so what.

  • Listen chump, Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark... The tv-channel this was recorded from is DR2... Danish radio.

I live here, I should know

  • @lopescone i couldn't agree more..... it makes you want the moment to never end. such an intimate and beautiful chemistry between them all....

i think that as we watch these clips and experience these moments with these wonderful artists, that time rewinds into the past that was lost and brings it back into the present where we can all be together. music as magical and evocative as this is immortal and imperishable.

    cheers.

  • does anyone know what song bill was jamming when monica walked in?

  • @csfreak50 Yes, it's the same song. It's Waltz for Debby, they're just coming out of the bridge, it sounds like.

  • Smoking in bed is not a good idea. Even if you're a fabolous singer.

  • Bill evans is the best on that piano.

either that or i havent heard the best yet

  • what language is this? :)

  • I think its danish

don't quote me on that though I'm not 100% sure

  • Comment removed

  • swedish.

  • It's Swedish.

Monica Zetterlund was one of the best female singers of Scandinavia during the 60's.

Her voice is so sorowfull and haunting.

  • swedish

  • It's a such a beutyfull song, I really really love it.

Have somebody the lyric? And may be the trancelation too?

  • Beautiful. Simple as that.

    genial evans

    chau

  • RIP Monika.

    Thanks again

    Asa

  • Una joya este vid!

  • Oh wow, oh wow. I love her. I love him. They have so many beautiful conversations. For example at 2:56 Monika starts it and Bill replies at 3:05 with a charming little phrase. They completely "get" each other. You can see it in their facial expressions. They make a wonderful pair.

  • don't forget the rhythm section! TELEPATHIC!

  • @joshuajavajoshuajava Eddie Gomez doesn't do to badly either! ;)

  • @joshuajavajoshuajava

my guess is that she got the lyrics wrong

  • @joshuajavajoshuajava well they actually had a relationship! but you probably knew that.

  • beautiful song.

  • George Burns lived to be a hundred with a cigar in his mouth.

  • realmente joyas del universo

  • @sumer937 you are right.

  • Bill is Bill, the greatest.

But that bass player Gomez is awesome, his bass lines are definately special.

  • it seems she smokes ganja))

  • 3/4 to 4/4 is sick.

Eddie Gomez is such a beast.

  • Smoking before singing? :S

  • Music is lovely.

In the 1960's people smoked every where. In cinemas, kitchens, studios, living rooms, restaurants, at working places, hospitals.

    You name it.

    Liberated ladies started smoking.

No one said it woudl be harmful. It was hip.

The combination of musicians is fantastic.

  • Not so political correct today but totality ok in the 60's :)

  • nat king cole smoked before every recording session..he thought it gave his voice a deep tone

    he died of lung cancer.

  • and monica died in her bed, surrounded by flames started by a cigarette.

  • @blah148 the minute someone dies he's a smoker or an alcoholic or over weight. I got news for you. Non smokers die every goddamn day.

  • @blah148 well monica died in a fire not by smoking!

  • @ShredST

Smoking gives women a barmy voice. Haven't you heard?

Or possibly this was only in the sixties.
