He knew soooo much of harmony of all eras. I recommend reading the book "The Harmony of Bill Evans", by Jack Railly. It is a very technical book, but gives a very good insight of who he was in terms of one of the musical geniuses of the 20th Century. He could "read" from a Stravinsky score directly transposing to his pianos and he didn't miss a note!...

Of course, it takes away from your breath support, as well as the horrible things it does to the body. By the time the warnings came out in the 60s, most of the singers were already hooked, and they didn't want to take away from that certain something in their voice, so they kept smoking.
