This is wonderful! Along with Gigli I would add Ferruccio Tagliavini and the young Jose Carreras as having the most naturally beautiful tenor voices; there were also, of course, many other great tenors, but for me these three had the most ravishing sound. Almost certainly the most beautiful tenor voice of all time. This is what great tenor singing is all about. Oh, I do so wish we still had singers who realized that, and actually sang instead of screamed. This is perfectly loud enough to be heard in any theater in the world, and people simply respond to beauty more than any other thing in the fine arts.
The movie arrived in 1954 in our village. I was 12 yo. My mother took me with her to the cinema and we both have cryed there for one and a half our. This is Giglis best song. I love this man and his sweet voice !
Adriana, I think your information is wrong, unless I am mistaken. There are two films tilted Non ti scordar di me with B. Gigli, one directed by Augusto Genina (1935) and another directed by Zoltan Korda (1936). The video is from the second film. Enzo Curti was also Giglis character in that film, a similar of which was made in 1958 with Ferruccio Tagliavini under the title Vento di primavera.
the Greatest tenor of all times! Just to mention that he was a close friend of Padre Pio who would walk away in tears when he heard the maestro sing is favourite song......
Gigli was the leading tenor at the Met after Caruso left. He made many films in his native Italy, often playing an ordinary working class hero who sang opera on the side. This scene was probably from one of those films. Those films were very popular in their day, always bringing the audience to tears as you can see in this clip from 1935. A voice so soft and sweet you couldn't help crying.
I saw Gigli in concert in 1952 in Heidelberg. He was 62 years old at that time, and still had a glorious voice, albeit strictly falsetto at that time.
Hello opera fan. I am 77 years young and I was 20 and in the US Army stationed in Heidelberg. Germany in the early 1950's The Korean War was going on half way around the world.. I had been an opera fan all my life and while in Europe I got to go to La Scala, Milan, the Rome opera and the Paris opera. And I got to see the Berlin Philharmonic under Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic and the Amsterdam Concertgebow. I have lived most of the past 50 years in Hollywood. Still alive and well
@oldmusicman32 What does this have to do with Gigli ? I was hoping you said you heard Gigli but i thank you for your appreciation and love of classical music ..This world/society is losing lovers of truly great music Here's to many many more years of you enjoying the best life has to offfer Lord knows there is a quickly dying appeciation for it!!!
His 1935 HMV recording of this song, where he didn't sing in messa voce was not nearly as good as this one. My favorite Gigli rendition is from a live concert he gave in the mid 30s, where he addresses the audience in Italian and English at the end. It was from an LP my father had called 'Beniamino Gigli recital' released by Everest/Scala Records. Date was not included but I lost the LP a long time ago and I wish I could hear it again. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.
That recording you mention isn't bad But Giglii never had a bad recording -did he??? Everest records were phenomenal They never doctored any of trhe original recordings from what I remember.. I had a few of their LPs They truly appreciated the golden age!! Are they still around??
I would love it to be able to say something .... but I just can't ..... whatever thing I could write would never match the emotion I feel as I listen to this ...
More like his voice is what makes me feel amazing. There exists no better interpretation in my opinion. The phrasing and color can not be matched. Incredible
Thanks philster61 for the info re: young Pavarotti meeting Gigli. I love it. Those 2 great Italian tenors are on my list of TEN all time greats. The image of the great Gigli encouraging a 10 yr old Luciano, is just fascinating. I recall Pav. saying that he saw Gigli in Modena. After the opera,
in 1820 a man named fredrick osloft one day he was working in his lab until a ghost came by and killed him the next morning fredrick was nowhere to be seen 100 years later two boys went in the lab as a dare the boys where never seen again where aparently murdered now that u have read this comment tonight when u go to sleep the two boys and fredrick will come and murder you but you can stop this by posting this comment on 5 other videos by midnight im sorry i relly hate these things :'(
my father saw him live in Newcastle, England and told me many times how honoured he was to have witnessed Gigli singing. he has many 78rpm recordings boxed away in the attic of Gigli and other from the 1930s and 40s which I will dust off and convert to MP3s one day. Would MP3's do justice ?
my dad saw him at royal albert hall he has the programe that was signed by gigli which i donated to the gigli museam after he died .he said he was the greatest singer he ever saw i wish i kept it now worth a fortune now but this song nobody can sing this like gigli
Your father was a very lucky soul Appreciate your dad for his seeking out the best life had to offer. Please follow in his footsteps He would be proud! of you for mentioning this. We need more people like him. to pass thru this world I know you miss him!
@j72050 Bjorling does not belong in the top three. Mario Lanza does, even though he did not make a career out of singing operas. He undoubtedly had the most beautiful natural voice for an operatic tenor. Moreover, there are others who excelled more than Bjorling. Del Monaco, Corelli...
No one sings this better, not even di Stefano. The way he caresses the phrases at 1:39 is incredible. Who ranked him 3rd after Bjorling and Pavarotti? You must be crazy. Bjorling didn't have an Italian voice and Pavarotti certainly was not a greater Italian lyric than Gigli.
Excuse me, but Bjoerling at times sounded more Italian in his phrasing and dynamics than most of his Italian contemporaries. Gigli had a sweet, warm voice even though he also had a tendency to slide up to his notes and infused his interpretations with way too much histrionics. I would still rank the top three as Caruso, Bjoerling then Gigli.
@primobaritono77 Don't be so pretencious. People always want to pick at greatness (in your case to make yourseld look smarter than you are). He is as close to perfection as we have had so far.
@primobaritono77 U also have no clue what ur talking about. Bjorling top 5 possibly, top 10 definitely. Top 3 no way. I'll give u one thing, Bjorling is probably the most technically sound tenor. But that doesn't mean his voice or his ability to express emotion is one of the best.
@primobaritono77 - Oddly enough I've never felt drawn to Caruso's singing. Gigli and Bjoerling, yes, Franco Corelli, definitely, but in the end the angel (for me) is Gigli. I love his emotional phrasing as it comes from the heart, and "that" is the centre of all things beautiful!
my dad god bless him saw gigli at albert hall greatest thing he ever saw nobody can sing like him for pure sweetness of the voice lucky for my dad he has a signed programme gigli signed which has been passed down to me
Certainly this is Gigli's song and best version - just hear others whizz at great speed through this with little feeling. Actually this is a good film and Gigli does act: surprisingly moving, genuine emotion. Sentimental but heh! we all need that sometimes.
Gigli's singing was like flowing gold, free from the effort you feel in most contemporary tenors. Schipa was also great, but with a "smaller" voice, even if very refined and subtle. I agree with most of you; Gigli is the greatest!
Will all these great singers like Beniamino Gigli and so many others from the early times die with us when we go. I don't see any interest in such beautiful voices in todays generation. This is real singing.
Very few tenors have enjoyed a success that was equal to that of Gigli. Cosidered the only true successor to Caruso. Gigli has the voice, diction, and phrasing combined all together from high notes to very pianissimos.
With his voice he was able to raise money for
various charities through his life time.
His repertory was endless with over 40 years
of a very successful artist and he will never be forgotten ny his public.
Cara mio Ben greetings from Ireland and one of your great admirers..good to know that that lovely song was composed for you. Maybe too, youtube will make it available..Bilstew..
Gracias Beniamino por todo tu arte. Realmente muchos momentos de inmensas alegrías te debo, pues muchas más me has dado. Tu recuerdo es inmortal. Descansa en paz MAESTRO!!!!
There is no comparison. Gigli was a great artist. We are talking here here one of the greatest tenors in the world. Amy Winehouse is not in any ones league.
I ca not hear Gigli sing this song"Non Ti Scordar Di Me". What wonderful phrasing and feeling expressed here. You have the feeling that Gigli is singing just to you. The tears
I have, Canta Pe'Me, Santa Lucia, M'appari, The Swan, Santa Lucia, Flower Song, Solo per te, Funiculi Funicular, La Daza, Mi par D'udir Ancora, Seranade ( Tosselli) Donna, non vida Mai, O'Paradiso. Am I not lucky?
If you have seen this film you would be even more excited! Gigli was never the great matinee idol in apereance and that's what makes makes the film so moving! His acting is simple but honest and it makes for a lovely effect. She is a beautiful woman... But I must repeat, Gigli's acting is just superb, touching heart wrenching... I never thought I would say that, but it just works. If ever you get a chance, get the complete film... I still cry thinking of it...
It has dawned on me that the 2 Non Ti Scordar Di Me videos are taken from the film starring Gigli and Gardner... hence I was chasing a chimera.... I should have just let the glorious singing enrapture me and not muse on the imagined romance that I thought was there.... it was all Hollywood...
Still I have always enjoyed Gigli from way back in 1950 or so when I first heard him on HMV 78 rpms.... and sometimes wished that he did not gush and sob... he would have surpassed Caruso...
Beniamino Gigli sings with such passion and feeling.
His voice carries you away on a magic carpet visiting
memories lived. Gigli always moves me to tears as I remember my late husband. Numerious times I played the dvd movie Non ti Scordar di me and I always enjoy it partially when Gigli comes to propose marriage to Joan Gardner his words are from the heart felt with passion.
AchillesShield, google Bel Canto Society, find the store page. Then find the dvd of DO NOT FORGET ME. They ship internationally. It's a beautiful film, & contains some of Gigli's best mezza voce singing. Enjoy!
that was 72 years ago and if she is still around she will be in her mid nineties with memories of the naval officer if she did not relent and of Gigli.... she seemed to have been an actress since she was in the cameo in this rendition and yet again in the other rendition when Gigli belted out this same glorious song.... wonder if it was all part of pre-arranged presentation... or is it my dispeptic aged mind that is creating chimerical things...
such honeyed outpouring... wonder who that lady with the tears on her cheek was...she seemed to be in a romantic scene with someone too during the song,,, does anyone know who she was?
She is Joan Gardner, and yes, she is in love with a navy officer whom she left thinking that he is a casa nova, therefore her tristesse while listening to the aria.
Your looking at the greatest influence on Pavarotti. When Pavarotti was 12.He met Gigli and announced he wanted to become an opera singer. He is the reason why we have Pavarotti today.Gigli once was asked when did he stop his voice training. He had just finished vocalising and then ansered with."Just now"
In the wonderful'Pavarotti and the Italian tenor" series, Luciano stated that his favorite tenor was DeStefano, which caused a rift with his father Fernando who was a Gigli fanatic.
Did you know that Pavarotti met Gigli when he was 12. He said to Gigle that he too was going to be a great tenor. Gigli than patted him on the head and said something along the lines of thats good my boy.
one doesn't see this approach to singing muuch today.Everything is about volume...I fully expect to read someone say that del monico did it better or some other trumpet sounding tenor( not that MdM wasn'tgreat but he never sang this sweetly-and that is for sure!)
People don't know how to singing softly or forte (the technique is very similar since extremes meet) - today everything is in the mouth. Fortissimo is equally impressive as mezza voce - and equally not available.
As serious reviewers have noted (to their surprise) Gigli's performance in this film is very moving, honest and arresting. if you spot a copy of the full video, have a glass or two or wine and watch it - lovely.
@tenorrmanMany tenors went to Melocchi mostly out of neccessity, They could not be heard or wanted a bigger sound. There was no reason for Gigli to go to Melocchi. There was good reason for DelMonaco to go to Melocchi. MDM could not be heard PASSED the 3rd aisle as his wife had mentioned.MDM was Melocchis most successful student which inspired other tenors to study with him, like Gastone Limarilli and GianFranco Cecchele whom both had excellent careers but not as bel canto singers. Enjoy

Certainly this is Gigli's song and best version - just hear others whizz at great speed through this with little feeling. Actually this is a good film and Gigli does act: surprisingly moving, genuine emotion. Sentimental but heh! we all need that sometimes.

What a delightful voice ! Gigli was ,is ,the best one . And who is the beautiful lady crying ? What a expressive face !
CALZOLA 3 years ago
The woman is Joan Gardner who stared with
Gigli. The movie is absolutely a piece
of artistry. It will bring tears to your
eyes. I watched and watched it never get
tired of it. Gigli had the voice, passion
for this most lovely Italian love song.

Many thanks for these rare informations !
CALZOLA 3 years ago
One fact perhaps you like to know - Ernesto De
Curtis - wrote the song"Non Ti Scordar di me"
just for Gigli. From 1920 de Curtis was Gigli's accompanist traveling with Gigli.
De Curtis was Gigli's son Enzo godfather.
Gigli sang at the memorial concert for
De Curtis when he suddenly died and Gigli
was very very devastated.

Beniamino Gigli was certainly one of the most remarkable voices of the bel canto, and it will always be a pleasure to enjoy his voice.
lincoln1960 3 years ago 2
Gigli's singing was like flowing gold, free from the effort you feel in most contemporary tenors. Schipa was also great, but with a "smaller" voice, even if very refined and subtle. I agree with most of you; Gigli is the greatest!
jmarqueslr 3 years ago
Will all these great singers like Beniamino Gigli and so many others from the early times die with us when we go. I don't see any interest in such beautiful voices in todays generation. This is real singing.

You are absolutely right Gigli had a very unique, beautiful voice, his diction, phrasing, and passion all combined together.
Gigli's voice can make you cry stirring of memoirs past. No one can take Gigli's place.

Oddly, reminds me of Amy Winehouse "unplugged" doing the "Valerie" song on the DL Show. Here at youtube. Soulful.

There is no comparison. Gigli was a great artist. We are talking here here one of the greatest tenors in the world. Amy Winehouse is not in any ones league.

Gigli sang in Wales in 1922 at Cardiff, my father amongst true lovers of the
voice and surrounded by a nationality of appreciative vocalists could not believe
the pure, natural unaffected unstrained range of this amazing Gigli. By the listen
to his Nessum Dorma.. that was copied to become stardom!!
mariacallas6 4 years ago 2
This song was written just for Gigli by Ernesto De Curtis. Every word he feels. The translation is just
beautiful into English. What a lovely thought never
to be forgotten. Gigli's voice so full, rich, one
is blown away with his first phrase from his mouth.
More..more...Gigli.
345murphy 4 years ago 2
I have watched this film over and over again. Gigli
always brings me to tears...his acting is so touching,
believeable. He feels what he is singing. The translation of the words of "Non ti Scordar di me"
are so touching, so full of the emotion of love. I believe Gigli had a lot of appeal as an actor. He had
charism, dynamic personality on the screen or in person. I am thankful that we have these clips to be
able to see him and hear him sing.
345murphy 4 years ago 2

Enjoy!

that was 72 years ago and if she is still around she will be in her mid nineties with memories of the naval officer if she did not relent and of Gigli.... she seemed to have been an actress since she was in the cameo in this rendition and yet again in the other rendition when Gigli belted out this same glorious song.... wonder if it was all part of pre-arranged presentation... or is it my dispeptic aged mind that is creating chimerical things...
tomkhng 4 years ago
such honeyed outpouring... wonder who that lady with the tears on her cheek was...she seemed to be in a romantic scene with someone too during the song,,, does anyone know who she was?
tomkhng 4 years ago
She is Joan Gardner, and yes, she is in love with a navy officer whom she left thinking that he is a casa nova, therefore her tristesse while listening to the aria.

Your looking at the greatest influence on Pavarotti. When Pavarotti was 12.He met Gigli and announced he wanted to become an opera singer. He is the reason why we have Pavarotti today.Gigli once was asked when did he stop his voice training. He had just finished vocalising and then ansered with."Just now"
philster61 4 years ago
i like that. thanks fot telling us that
eyebeams2007 4 years ago
In the wonderful'Pavarotti and the Italian tenor" series, Luciano stated that his favorite tenor was DeStefano, which caused a rift with his father Fernando who was a Gigli fanatic.
JoelBWeisberg 2 years ago
Interesting.
Did you know that Pavarotti met Gigli when he was 12. He said to Gigle that he too was going to be a great tenor. Gigli than patted him on the head and said something along the lines of thats good my boy.
philster61 2 years ago
Gigli said that "this is wery good, but you will have to do a lot of work, to be a great singer."
It is from Luciano biografy (My life)

he was a great singer but can you say "schmaltz"?
the way the audience seems transfixed by him is hilarious. they look like they are hearing and seeing God.
pasfresh123 4 years ago
one doesn't see this approach to singing muuch today.Everything is about volume...I fully expect to read someone say that del monico did it better or some other trumpet sounding tenor( not that MdM wasn'tgreat but he never sang this sweetly-and that is for sure!)
vickersman 4 years ago
People don't know how to singing softly or forte (the technique is very similar since extremes meet) - today everything is in the mouth. Fortissimo is equally impressive as mezza voce - and equally not available.

As serious reviewers have noted (to their surprise) Gigli's performance in this film is very moving, honest and arresting. if you spot a copy of the full video, have a glass or two or wine and watch it - lovely.

Contrast Gigli's rendition with that of Tucker's and Gedda's ( both on youtube ) . Gigli sang a romantic song and the others musically declaimed.

Glad Melocchi never got hold of this voice
tenorrman 5 years ago
@tenorrmanMany tenors went to Melocchi mostly out of neccessity, They could not be heard or wanted a bigger sound. There was no reason for Gigli to go to Melocchi. There was good reason for DelMonaco to go to Melocchi. MDM could not be heard PASSED the 3rd aisle as his wife had mentioned.MDM was Melocchis most successful student which inspired other tenors to study with him, like Gastone Limarilli and GianFranco Cecchele whom both had excellent careers but not as bel canto singers. Enjoy
