  • sounds like a school orchestra, and that guitar tone.... pah.

  • Axelrod wrote some sweet ass music but he is a COLOSSAL asshole.

  • What's missing is The Wrecking Crew (some of the best sessions musicians in history) generally and drummer Earl Palmer in particular. Palmer gave those original records their funk.

I saw Donovan a few years back and it was the same thing. He was missing those crack session musicians like Jimmy Page and John Bonham. It sounded like a band he found in a local cafe and asked them to tag along.

Session men are the true unsung heroes of rock.

  • Wanna know why this band sounds so cheap and uninspired (no funk, no soul..)??? The difference between then and now is cannabis, LSD, and shrooms.

  • the orchestra is total pants, what a letdown ! i'm glad i wasn't there.

  • the person who recorded this should be thrown into the sea. its an affront to the greatness of axelrod's original recordings.

  • Richard Ashcroft..good choice..

  • never send english musicians to do american work... the fuck is that all about?

  • whats the song that starts @ 0:38?

  • Maybe not as good as the original but i guess you can't win all right?

  • they ruin the edge. it sounds like some kenny g wackness.

  • Love that head nod at 1:43

  • Is this available on DVD?

  • When I heard 'Holy Thursday' for the first time I knew it felt some part in my soul immediately. Since then Mr. Axelrod has become one of my favourite jazz men. Holy are you.

  • What's the name of the song that the guy was singing??? I know it was sung originaly by The Electric Prunes.

  • It's called Holy Are You and the guy singing it is Richard Ashcroft from The Verve. Brilliant.

  • Thanks a lot!!!

  • ué?

  • so beautifull!!!

    i love him

and i love the verve guy...

    awesome!!!

  • This band is garbage, the tones are all wrong super-clean almost processed..very disappointing. He couldve gotten anyone to make it at least sound fresh, the original drummer Earl Palmer is still alive i believe, and Carol Kaye the best bass player in the world is still alive, she played on everything..David is a legend but i think hes fryed out from all the drugs which made him godly in the first place, at the same time you cant go back to 1969.

  • I totally agree with you. The drummer was so fucking boring on those drums. The bassplayer did an okay job, but he should've left the upright bass at home and done it like Carol, she played a normal electric bass, right? :)

Earl and Carol were truly missed!

  • word... I almost feel sorry for David Axelrod. We'll remember him for his awsome records though, this was probably just a fun thing to do. Makes me wonder if the musicians even listened to the records to be honest.

  • hashwizard,

axelrod could not bring earl/drums, c,kaye/bass he had to use the house band called the "orchestra". he did pay for a couple "ringers". you are right on most counts except it has taken the public to catchup to 1969 now. also, have you heard tunes of his in the last 5 years? probably not, as it will take you, and others 30 years to catch up with what is written now.

and regarding "all the drugs" dont beleive all you read, or think you know; as that wold be a mistake mr. hashwizard!

  • Oooh damn this is so relaxxxxx.

  • axelrod nervous, agotophobic(ha ha), you dont have a clue. remember one thing it is called an intermission. you think anyone needed a bathroom break, crowd or band? how about a cigerette, as axelrod is not the only smoker! composers such as axelrod get better with time, listen to his stuff from now until 2000. mowax album, rabbit in headlights,etc.. i do agree with you as it is hard, complex writing, and if you are not versed as a studio musician, tough on "the orchestra"they were nervous man!

  • ohh yes love it

  • david axelrod is amazing but this live band sounds incredibly cheap in comparison w/ the original recordings

  • They were in a sense. The London session orchestra weren't told it was recorded, or that it was to be put out on DVD. Subsequently, no royalties for the musicians were discussed or have been offered since.

  • wrong, and you know the true facts! if your manager did not you ...well. how did you not see seven (7)cameras, when your "orchestra" was filmed before axelrod? is this blind reading or sight reading? you

should be blessed to play with axelrod. what have you done...how about lately?

  • nathan, your mgr. got the dough. i know'cause i sent the check to him. feel blessed, you were with axelrod! filming? you and the orchestra were filmed first. your mgr. has a copy. did you not see 7 cameras?

or the contract? why are you whinning, is that not your mgr's job?maybe it wasall the beer, as commented on by mojo, london telegraph, guardian and on the dvd!

  • i cant wait for this dvd, my friend stephen designed the packaging. you can check his work at www.sserrato.info. but yes, axelrod is amazing.

  • david axelrod is so damn awesome!!

  • David Axelrod is da shit!

    Give me more plz.
