What incredible playing. My 95 year old Uncle listened to this with me & he began to tear up because he thought The Squirrel Nut Zippers attempt at carrying on a 1940's big band tradition was fantastic. The old dude actually got out of his wheelchair to dance with my Mom. He said it was like finding a lost big band song. I had to go buy the cd for him. (Talk about music being great therapy. You can't under-estimate musical faith.)
If I ruled the world, music would have class :-) I've been arguing that the pop charts are full of shit for years! As long as the monkey general public keep finding joy in Lady GaGa, that Kesha skank, Beyonce, rappers, folky wankers and Emo she-males it won't change.
@littledrummerboy42 Agreed 100% .. Music is just an image these days, it's all about what they do and how fucked up they can get while doing it.. I'm worried to see the next generation's lady GaGa, human evolution might have made a turn for the worst :-\
Unfortunately for this to be a number 1 hit, it would have to be 1000% more repetitive and they would use a DJ to place shitty sounding sampled trumpets etc into it. Only a dictatorship would see this happy-go-lucky stuff truly succeed in the charts.
man we needa start up the swing and rockabilly movement again cuz im tired of all the crap they play nowadays. we needa here more music like this and less of that lil wayne shit.
@ILIVEAGREASYLIFE Check out Charlie Greaser. He's one of many Aussie bands keeping a steady flow of Rockabilly/Psychobilly going. Plus, where there's Rockabilly, there's Ska and Swing sometimes.
@FallenShards I wont argue the quality of one generation over another, I find that discussion absolutely banal, but look around you. There are more people than there has ever been before, interacting more than ever before. Sure it's harder than it has been to pick up a fad and say 'this is what this generation is about', but that's because the diversity of interest and experience is bigger than it has ever been.
@ILIVEAGREASYLIFE I'm not sure where you live but here in Devon, England we have a fantastic swing and rockabilly scene break out in the last 6 months. Its beginning to happen that's for sure, even the free partyscene is using electroswing in there sets!!
@ILIVEAGREASYLIFE Simple explaination for today's bland music. Unlike the generations of the 20's , 30's 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's our generation has no sense of style. Half of them can't write a complete sentence. They communicate in 90 i.q. texting lingo.
@thehasslessydney Apparently so, fright night, clash of the titans, conan and every other movie of the 80's that made a buck is being remade. There may not have been good taste, but the style was distinct.
@thehasslessydney The nineties saw grunge, post-soviet europe, later industrial and new wave, garage and brit pop, re-exploring psychedelic folk, rock, progressive, the start of COMPUTER MUSIC EDITING, pretty much the mainstay of all bands now, the INTERNET, rave culture and hardcore electronic music! Then there was the post-hardcore punk scenes, developing later into the admittedly terrible but distinctive emo and metal/hardcore scenes, the revival of sludge and doom, the desert sound,
@tinman24601 the indie/alternative (also pretty bad) and the associated faux bohemian thing, huge revival of DIY music, internet music sharing, artists recording in their bedroom on their shitty computers competing with the most famous stars out there, recording to the masses. there is so much out there. it wasn't hard to pin a style on the 90's 80's, 70's, because there were four or five at any one time, but in the 00's, it has exploded. people are producing culture like never before.
my friend is choreographing a dance to this song. and she taught it to me and the other dance company members in about 6 rehearsals. it's so cool! plus i'm hooked on this song now.
BTW, I have a buddy who's a heavy metal headbanger, and it drives him crazy when I play this stuff... which is exactly why I make a point of playing it every time he's around. LOL
My friend is too musically narrow minded to know that. If it isn't metal, he doesn't like it.
I think people in general are musically narrow minded, which is why bands like SNZ don't have the mainstream success that they deserve. IMO, heavy metal headbangers are probably the least tolerant and open-minded when it comes to other forms of music.
I tend to agree with you! For a subgenre that complains a lot about people not accepting and understanding them, they show little to no interest towards others and their musical styles. Not all of them of course, but a lot of them are indeed pretty single-minded... pity really. :)
Oh well, as long as we see the light, we're fine. And so would bands like SNZ be.
I just learned of these guys tonight by accident. On one of the business phone conference call ins I deal with, I had been hearing this lucious voice of a women keeping me enteertained on hold for several different calls. I decided to really listen to the lyrics today and guessed the namwe of the song was Blue Angel so here I am.
