  • Dio was a great singer. I never get tired of listening to songs like Neon Knights, Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell. But if you're talking about singing War Pigs, no one will ever surpass Ozzy.

  • Cool!

  • I love the tone of the guitar, dirty. Ronnie was a beast

  • @praetorianus72 Without even looking at your comment, the word that popped into my head during the solo was "dirty." Good stuff.

  • This is just so surreal on so many levels. he isn't going against the riff like he would do when he played this song live with black sabbath.

  • @hydrall9 this is Not Tony Iommi on this...This is the Guitarist from Elf.....

  • All Dio covers better then originals

  • @Vencermos yesss! listen dream on

  • @Vencermos cross eyed mary was not. sorry. it just wasn't.

  • I am just at the age where I discovered Sabbath with Dio as the frontman. Ozzy was a solo act to me. And just speaking for myself, I prefer Dio as the voice of Sabbath.

  • i like dio's cover better than the black sabbath paranoid cover

  • It would be so awesome going from covering a song with your bar band to actually being in that band that you covered

  • awesome nuff said!!

  • GO THE VERSION ON 'LIVE-EVIL'...BJC666...

  • Absolutely fantastic. Dio was the best vocalist Black Sabbath ever had.

  • Look up all of the band's RJD has been in, they all kick ass. i got to see Ronnie James Dio on his Last In Line tour and Sacred Heart tour...He is a Legend that is missed everyday. Ronnie find that place we all dream about....R.I.P.

  • Oh, so good so good so good!!!!

  • damn, that guitarist totally botched the solo! Maybe he was trying to improvise his own but it just ends up sounding like an amateur who just didn't learn the solo properly.

  • How ironic they are covering Sabbath

  • This cover is from 1971. Dio joined Sabbath in 1979

  • GROOVY TO THE MAX!! wonder if any of the band members were actually part elf. Yes elves do exist since I'm part elf!!

  • This is Elf live at The Bank, Cortland, NY late January or early February 1972.

  • Elf sure was a kickass band in its day

  • I was waiting for something mind blowing but frankly, Ozzy was way better in this song

  • @banished8910 Well the original version was recorded in the studio, and this is a cover after all.

  • @banished8910 THAT'S A TOUGH CALL...ALLLRIGGGGHTTTT!!!...BJC666...

  • omg, so awsome, better then the original

  • Ironic how Dio is covering a sabbath tune when he himself later becomes the vocalist for sabbath and releases my all time favorite sabbath record heaven and hell. \m/

  • I'd love to know how Elf would've recorded a Sabbath song two years before Sabbath recorded it... a time machine, perhaps? (Oh, I made a funny.)

  • This cover is from 1972 from the album "Elf - War Pigs'72" was a live album.

  • Just my 2cp here..im seeing alot of comments that this couldnt have been recorded before 1970 because Sabbath didnt release it until that tiime. But..Sabbath was a jam band that had been steady gigging since 1968 and had many songs in their lineup before they actually recorded them. also being as popular as they where right from the beginning, i can definetly see this cover having been done before 1970 :)

  • (-.-)\m/

  • THESE THREE FUCKS WHO DISLIKE ILL FIND THEM AND RIP THEM A NEW A HOLE NO LIE IM CREEPIN JUST WAIT CUZ SOME PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN SOME RESPECT JUST WAIT DIO IS THE ONE LISTEN ANE BE ENLIGHTEN FOR ALL TRUST ME

  • While I think this is an amzing cover, there really is just something missing. Geezer's rumbling bass and Iommi on guitar, as much as I hate to say it, Ozzy on vocals. I think Dio is superior in every way to Ozzy, but War Pigs I think is definitely Ozzy's besat ever song vocal wise. Contradiction yes. Dio is great, this solng is great. Metal is great!

  • yea yea, i like that little funk guitar around 6:30, that gives it something different. One of my favorite ozzy-era sabbath songs but no one comes close to Dio. Not now not ever. R.I.P.

  • great song, by a great singer, easily the best cover ever of this song. Even more so being that Dio does the Sabbath set better than Ozzy did, no disrespect to Ozzy, I love his stuff, but Dio is just freaking awesome.

  • Dio doing Black Sabbath cover before joining them, rotfl.

  • @Eldryzif ya its like Neal Schon finding the new guy - on You Tube doing Kareoke songs of Journey there are a few like this - Janick with Bruce then Maiden , how Tesla found Jeff Keith

    Good Cover !

  • The best cover i ever heard from War Pigs of Ronnie is in "Monsters of Rock_Live in Italy 1992" from the Sabbath Tour Dehumenaizer" , anyway Gary Driscoll did a great performance in that cover from ElF .... Great Gary!! ...

  • Ronnie is fuckin amazing.

  • Not too bad of a guitar tone they've got going there.

  • ronnie sounds so amazing!!!!!

  • i like this better than the ones he did WITH sabbath, a little soft, but it's great, who know that back when this was made, we was going To BE in sabbath,

  • I love the curious fact that Elf did this cover some years before Ronnie even THINKING of joining Sabbath, and the beautiful way that it was played/recorded!

    MARVELOUS! RIP DIO

  • Does anybody if David "Rock" Feinstein played on this track?

  • @scottd1984 Yep that's David "Rock" Feinstein on guitar.

  • @eruptionmat No no That's actually Ian Woodcock on guitar.

  • Little did Ronnie know, he would be in Sabbath. Anyway, this is definitely the best cover of "War Pigs" I have ever heard!

  • @eruptionmat You've clearly never heard Faith No More's version, superior in every way.

  • @MrAlienalda Yeah. Especially blah bleh blah parts. Fucking pissing me off.

  • While I love RJD, this is an Ozzy Osbourne song & will forever be so.

  • @rhinoal obviously you weren't listening. dio kicked the fuck out of ozzy at this song.

  • @Smikfouc Lets agree to disagree. Dio made a huge contribution to Sabbath in his time with them. This one is just an Ozzy song. There plenty of songs that Dio sang that Ozzy couldn't hold a canlde to.

  • i dont get...can someone give a clue about the cover and the time that happened?Did they payed tribute to the 19070 war pigs by black sabbath, right?

  • HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • Man that tone on the guitar is fucking facemelting!!

  • This band fucking rocks. It's almost a shame Dio went on to rainbow.

  • this little piggy went to the market

  • Doesn't sound like Iommi. This is probably a variation of the Elf lineup.

  • @Andragon90 Iommi was never with Elf.

  • @kickerpunter No shit. Some people are saying "No, this video is from the Heaven & Hell era."

  • @Andragon90 The people who think this is Iommi playing guitar obviously don't know Sabbath as well as they think.

I know it sounds condescending towards them, but it's true. Iommi has a unique and distinct style that is instantly recognisable. In covers, you can easily hear that he's not playing and that something is 'missing'.

  • @rigstula Bingo. Though I have heard a few wicked imitations that can fool Iommi himself :O

  • @rigstula

    you're right.

The guitar sounds to high pitched for an Iommy interpretation...

Iommy is heavier...And plays the Riff ...betterly...

  • @rigstula sooooo true man! the tone in this is like a mix of iommi's and page's. at least id like to think so. to me thats how it sounds. iommi had a lot of high end in his tone, but the low end was definitely pressent. pages was more of a brighter tone(at least i think, i really hope i dont get shot down for saying that lol) this however is like a mix, theres a lot more high end in it then the iommi tone but the right amount of low. also the playing style too. its all good though :D

  • @rigstula exactly, hes singing lol

  • @Tjuguskegg666 ok dont get stressed i know but this is a cover done sometime after 1970.

  • Awesome!!!

  • @ufofan1980 well in the 70's he did this and r u sure thats sabbath? elf did cover this song

  • Ronnie's voice was amazing.

he managed to sing songs that was written for voices like Ozzy, Coverdale etc and yet he could obtain the song.

    Long live Dio \m/ (-_-)\m/

  • sheesh - you come on here and pay a compliment to Dio...and you get swarmed by a bunch of presumptuous ignorant retarded buttrockers living in their Mom's basements. Fuck all ya'll...and lay off the bong.

  • @bnfox I would think that after being told that you don't know what irony is that you would try learn, but I guess not.

  • @ZeGentlemen - stick to crayons and get off the computer.

  • @ZeGentlemen -nice lesson in irony when you construct a sentence like "you would try learn..." ha ha ha ha ha - what a moron.

  • Comment removed

  • somebody help me with this dude. bnfox is offended by me replying "the most ironic" all i was doing was agreeing that it is ironic tht Dio would later join Sabbath, i dont know if he read it the wrong ay or what but my comment clearly reads "themost ionic" and he rsponds all pssy and pissed off i dont get it.??

  • Great lost post here!!! Feinstein was a most underated guitarest!!!! Kicked royal ass in 'The Rods' also. Saw them live and he played fantastic!!! Thx 4 sharing.

  • wow!! Never knew The God used to play bass. Thanks for share

  • i find this version better then the Sabbath one.

again the relevance of this song is sad.

  • when he started singing heavy metal he had its flaws like the long notes in this song but then he became the best singer of all time

  • gr8 gig

  • Man, this is incredible... What a wonderful treat! Thank you!

And, as always: what I have been posting since May 16th, 2010; a great light has gone out in the world. I am beside myself with grief...

  • in reality Dio is a man at 5'3,small

but when he sings i could swear he were 10 feet tall

he would rock until the day he had eventually fall

    -Austin Nemitz, 2010

  • klaus is a little taller, both super awesome singers, klaus is way underrated, not nearly as powerful as ronny was,but has awesome control and vibrato, and huge power, just not RJD power, now klaus could be the best rock singer alive,go see him live,it will be scorps last tour, they still sound great!,also great friends of dios, sounds like all the big rockers loved him and called him friend, must have been a sweetheart of a man,I'm going with YEAH ,also vital in the evolution of REAL metal!

  • @Gyphia Sorry for hurting your feelings, please forgive me.

  • Im confused... What year was this recorded? The Paranoid album was released in 1970.

  • @Gyphia Oh yeah, i remember you........Your the fat naked guy in the movie Borat.

  • Ronnie blew the lid off of this. I still love Ozzy's original though, but Sir Ronnie James Dio had the voice.

  • Chemotherapy took him away .

    RIP RJD .

    greastest voice ever

  • RIP Ronnie James Dio

  • I sure hope Ronnie is recovering well after his stomach cancer. He has a very strong will, so I know he will be fine and getting back to what he does best, blowing everyone away with his Godly voice!

  • @MrRandycouturefan ...I can't imagine Dio shooting up LSD, but it's an interesting story. I have read that they called the band Elf because all the guys in the band were short in stature, so Elf seemed like a fitting band name. Dio is actually 5'4" from everything I have read about him. Seeing him in concert many times I would say that height is correct.

  • this song was first a Black Sabbath song or this is the original version?

  • @guysapire Elvis did the original

  • @zappawizard hehehe

  • @zappawizard I thought Brittany Spears did the original

  • @MrRandycouturefan your an idiot!

  • @gabethegun I may be an idiot but at least I like women. Your a homosexual!

  • @gabethegun Ganz was the bad guy in 48 hours with eddie murphy

  • that's the cover!

  • dio is fully italian but he was born in america.

  • Dio's real name is Ronald James Padavona and he was born on July 10, 1942. Have any of you heard Dio's stuff from the late 50s and early 60s. Ronnie and the Red Caps, Ronnie and the Prophets. He even sings some Sinatra and Jerry Lee Lewis. He is very versatile and definitely the best, most melodic and most powerful rock singer and still belts out the amazing vocals at age 67!

  • @OZRIC1985 I have and it's great...the original stuff

  • @OZRIC1985 No, but did you also know that Dio named his band Elf, because after he injected LSD into his veins he looked in the mirror and thought he turned into an elf. Dio stands only 4'10' but does have the greatass voice in metal history...... glory to God!

  • @MrRandycouturefan you are an idiot! that's not why!!!! it's because he was the tallest in the band (lol)

  • @PisYCaca1 riddle me this: whose taller, Dio or Klaus Meine from the scorps?

  • @MrRandycouturefan you douche Klaus Meine is taller(by 10 cm) but that's not the point asshole, even if there are people who are 50 cm tall Dio was the tallest in the band(God, what an idiot you are) and He never took any drugs or drunk too much. He was the perfect musician

  • @PisYCaca1 Dio smoked marijuana. Still sang his arse off though. RIPRJD

  • @lorddavoncarter no he didn't, did you ever check anything that had to do with drugs in his career?

  • @PisYCaca1 If you read any interviews from him and his peers, both before and after he died, it is mentioned. Here's one from the guys on the big 4 tour. Watch the end of the video. You can also just google it. watch?v=gSo26rmChOQ

  • @lorddavoncarter he smoked cassually, just like anyone who lived between those years

  • @PisYCaca1 He was smoking when I met him back in 02. So unless he quit sometime between the tour with Megadeth, and 02 tour with Hammerfall that's a long time for him to be "occasionally" smoking weed. Anyways, it ain't that big a deal. Just pointing out he did use a drug. RJD still and forever be the greatest vocalist in my book.

  • @lorddavoncarter yeah you met him back in 02 and had sex with him.

man, you sound like kg from the pick of destiny, you're pathetic

  • @OZRIC1985 When i saw him with DIO and Heaven and Hell he rocked! A highlight of my life was hearing Holy Diver live. I got into DIO when i was 8 years old in 1983. Never turned my back on him.

  • @fullstack2 hey bud cool you got to see him before he passed on.i been a fan since rainbow early 70 's i was born in 67. i have an older brother who was a hard rocker and loved the sabb s. he got me into them. yeah i saw heaven and hell last year in md.great show. the show the year before was better..dio was the ultimate frontman.!!!

  • @OZRIC1985 I love how he got his name from a mobster named Johnny Dio..haha

  • fantastic

  • Ronnie Dio was from Cortland, NY, not England. Elf never actually broke up. Ritchie Blackmore formed Rainbow from Elf. Blackmore systematically fired each of the Elf members over time. Dio left Rainbow due to musical differences with Blackmore and joined Sabbath soon afterward. NOW you know the rest of the story.

  • No, elf were on tour with deep purple, rithcie wanted change, asked ronnie, most of ritchie blackmore's rainbow consisted of elf.

  • the Electric Elves played my high school when I was a kid. My girlfriend got pissed at me cause I wouldn't dance, my buddies and I had to watch the band. We usually didn't get bands of this calibre. After the dance we all went up and told them how awesome they were. I asked if they had recorded at all. Turns out I was talking to Ronnie at that time thet hadn't recorded anything.

  • drummer is kick ass. Did he continue with any other bands?

  • good as bill warde...

  • Gary played with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Bible Black. He sadly passed in 1987.

  • this is way better than ozzies version

  • realmente bueno, dio forever

  • Wow, what a fucking long track.

Nice though, I'm a bit lit and I've been headbobbing to this the whole time. I wish more modern bands would fill out their tracks like this.
